I'm refinishing the stock on my 853.
I have it all sanded down, including the "whisker" wet sanding to bring out the grain, to 400 grit.
I noticed a feature toward the forward stock end.
It looks like a wooden plug was made and inserted all the way through to the other side toward the end of the forearm.
Here's what appears to be a wooden plug.

Does anyone know of a reason for this?
Is this plug on all 853s or is is only on mine?
Thanks for your help.
-
Not sure about the plug, but looking forward to the results and process posts!
-
Here's where it stands now with it wet sanded for raising the grain at 400 grit.
The photo doesn't really show how smooth it is. On one of the final sanding with Tru-Oil,
Will be with 600 grit or maybe even some 1000 grit with a last very light application of Tru-Oil.
Right now it feels so smooth it actually feels soft.

I don't own an 853 but have seen many photos of them and several photos showed a plug in that location. I've often wondered why the plug was there.

It could be that this stock was also used for other Avanti models and for the 853 the hole that was there was different from
the other model(s) the stock could fit.
Other than that I can't think of another reason other than being a mistake of some sort.

nah, my 753 and 853 both have it. My theory is that maybe the jig that copies the stocks at the factory holds several blanks at once, and that drill hole may be used to hold them in place while the blades and sanders go to town... Its in all of them but the 953 and new synthetic stock ones (which are molded plastic, so it does not require the hole)

Thanks for the information, lillysdad621.
Now I know it's not just mine. :)

Just for the record mine has it…I think it gives it character…good luck

I ended up with my 853C as a restoration project.
Wouldn't pump or fire at first like the valve was in lockup.
Ronno6 had a seal kit for me.
Came with sling (rusty buckles) missing rear sight, very rusty front sight.
Apparently the stock tends to crack there.
Mine has the plug (and crack) but one side of the plug had loosened.
I reglued and clamped it. I refinished the whole stock after. I even managed to save the sticker that came on the stock.

I certainly admire u folks that refinish ,no matter the gun….years ago I bought a new 1994 397..beautiful wood as I remember….anywho i bent the pump arm…didnt have a clue then how to repair so sent the gun off …came back in a timely fashion…fast forward to GTA ….from reading on here it occurred to me that when gun was repaired they swapped out forearm and mechanism as a unit….stock has a nice tiger stripe and forearm blah, blah…I bought everything needed to refinish but just couldnt do it to that tiger striped stock…lol…good luck

I just clear coated my stock. I like that Shiney look.

I'm torn between high gloss and satin finishes.
I think I'm going to go high gloss to begin with, and if I don't like it I can just steel wool buff it
until it's more of a satin.
Ron

Pale looks nice when done right :-*
They’re not mine ;D
-
Since there isn't much by way of grain lines, gloss is what I would choose.

Hmm, this thread makes me want to refinish my 2260 stock via oil instead of painting it.
Pretty sure you've watch this one:

That's a Hatsan Proxima stock.

That's a Hatsan Proxima stock.
Probably looks nice because it's walnut (?) :-*
My stock is just a lowly Crosman 2260, but I'm thinking of doing it come summer vacation.

That's the one I'm using as a step by step guide.
It's a very good How To .

Was it you who mentioned something about teak oil, Rion sir?

'Nother thread maybe, but yes, guilty as charged.

Comparing stocks and other kinds of finishes or wood is still on topic in my book.
Thanks.

I think I would like mine darker.
When I get back to work, I’ll ask around who does finishes around here.
Been spoiled when I was still in Asia ‘cuz it’s so easy to outsource this kind of stuff.
I like this super tough high gloss polyurethane finish :-*

Mr. Ron, I’m pretty sure you’re set on the oil finish, but I’d like to throw it out there re true bedliner paint, and no, not just the canister-type.
I asked quite a while ago an outfit if they bedline stocks and they said yes for something like $80.
I would have gone for it, but the $80 was only for black, while tan, or FDE, or ODG were double the price :P
I’m partial to tan or FDE, and while they’re not for everyone they’re almost impervious to abuse ;D

You're talking about the stuff you put in the bed of a pickup truck?
I've seen whole trucks painted in it, and it looks awesome.
This rifle is not going anywhere but my back yard, and it most definitely will not be abused.
Besides with a bed liner coating, the grain/figure of the natural wood can't be seen.
That's the main reason I'm doing this.
I do thank you for your suggestion.
A bed liner would be great for a hunting rifle that gets jostled about during the natural things that go
on during a hunt.

Late to the thead but have you considered OB shine juice. An American idea and it consists 1/3 boiled linseed oil 1/3 cut shellac 1/3 methylated spirits (alcohol (. Wipe it on with a rag and dries in less than 30 minutes; say three coats in an hour. 5 coats is plenty. Durable easy to polish or wax over easily rejuvenated .
Very useful stuff in a woodworking shop
Golden shellac really gives a nice colour to wood.

I hadn't considered that. Thanks for the option.

Good stuff too, known as LSD by wood workers.

Btw, what size of Tru Oil did you order?
-
It just arrived. :)
I ordered the 8 FL OZ bottle.
Probably a life time supply, right?

Probably.
I'll be monitoring your progress ;D

The Tru-Oil arrived today and I already put the first coat on.
I'll let it dry for about 2 hrs. and buff it with #0000 Steel wool.
2 hrs is what the instructions said. Should it be more?
After that I'll add another coat.

Will it darken it a bit?

Will it darken it a bit?
Additional coats might darken a tiny bit, but I don't expect it to be very much.

Looking forward to coat 2 and some time for things to absorb and settle in!
-
I've done the first and second coats of diluted mixture of 2 parts mineral spirit to 1 part oil.
I'll buff the second coat with the #0000 steel wool, then I'll apply 1 thin coat of full strength
oil and let it dry over night.

The stock refinishing is complete.
I've come to the point of diminished return. I could keep adding applications,
but it's not going to get any shinier
It turned out really nice. I wish there was more figure to show, but it still looks
nice. It really shows depth that the photos and videos just can't show.

Unfortunately I did not do the work so I do not have a lot of details. I know all the finish was removed with stripper and it was lightly sanded. There was then stain applied and 3 coats of clear. I do not know the type of stain or the type of clear other than it was satin. A Bisley recoil pad was also fitted to it with walnut spacer. Everyone has their own taste. I think Ron's turned out very nice.
