Would an Element Optics Helix 4-16x44 be good for hunter field target? Will the parallax give good ranging?
-
I'm not a HFT shooter, but I do own a Helix 4-16x44 w/ APR-1C reticle. I just got the scope, mounted it and took it to the range to zero. It is a very fine reticle and, with my eyes, is sometime hard to see against a red or black target dot. Again... not an HFT shooter, but I'm not sure I would choose FFP if you are going to dial down the magnification.
I also own two other Helix in 6-24x50 SFP w/ EHR-1C reticles and they work fine for me shooting targets and squirrels. The parallax adjustment seems to be dead on with all the scopes.

Check the minimum focus. I thought they were 15y.
The Element helix 6-24 is a great hunter field target (not to be confused with HFT UK) scope. I've seen a few people use them with success.

I checked the specs, and it says minimum distance is 15 meters (about 16 yds). Too far for FT. You need to go down to 10 yds or less.

One of the vendor sites had the minimum distance at 10 yards. Element's site says 15.
"dang", I ordered one on sale last night on DVOR.

The minimum focus is not ideal but you might be able to get away with it.I have a few old scopes I use for ft that don’t go down to ten but have gotten use to how blurry ten is vs 12. And for the actual shot I just turn the magnification down to the lowest setting for the shot.Again, not ideal but most shots are above the 15 yards you mentioned. And chances are the ones closer are your offhand shots so turn the scope down and let the lead fly. 🤪

It's 15 yds. on the Helix and Titan, 10yds. on the Nexus.
I was shooting both Helix scopes again today and I definitely prefer the EHR reticle to the APR. That very fine center dot on the APR gets lost, at least with my eyes.

15y is not usable for FT. I have a scope that focuses to 10m and it's just usable. I run a high scope height and the difference between 10m and 9m is quite a few clicks.
I also find that scopes maxing out at 16x are not typically as clear as 24x scopes set for 16. Just my 2¢

What scope height are you currently using?
I have been running a 3.95" over bore in hunter, helps with ranging vagueness between 50 and 55, but makes close shots ranging more critical. Like 21 moa hold at 10yds.

Thane,
I'm only at 2.75-3" on my guns. Are you using a bullpup? That scope height is pretty tall!
-
Yes, FX M3 bullpup and I run it high.
USFT at 2.85, too difficult to use a high scope.
