Gertrude, that is.
Gertrude is the vintage R1 that I bought from Booger back almost 4 years ago, and she's been my primary starling gun since I bought her. I LOVE Gertrude, and she quickly earned a place in my top three slots. She's also the gun who is well-travelled and went on to Canada, while I was at the Fun Shoot in Kentucky. LOL
A few months ago, I was out at the bench shooting Gertrude, when she had a sudden loss of power and drop in POI. Because of various other life stuff, I never got around to getting her looked at until I read a thread in this gate a few weeks ago, and saw that Dennis highly recommended Ron Stearns (Bayman) for working on HW's. That was a good enough recommendation for me to contact Ron to see if he'd consider taking a look at Gertrude for me.
He kindly accepted, and I boxed her up and shipped her off to her next exotic travel destination...New York City....where it's said that SOME brands of salsa are made! ;)
Apparently, Gertrude was a mess and needed major surgery, so I gave the go-ahead to Ron to do whatever she needed, and he went way above and beyond, and he labored over that gun, and he tweaked, and he fine-tuned, and had what sounds like a *heck* of a time!
I got Gertrude back yesterday while I was at work, so I didn't get her ready for shooting until this morning. I just slapped on a cheapie scope as a temporary measure, because I will be taking it back off within the next few days, but it was one that was handy, just sitting on the gun working bench, and I took her to shoot a few rounds.
Oh
My
Goodness!
It's like shooting one of my FWB's now. NO KIDDING!
She even *sounds* like one of them. I am so happy with it, it essentially left me speechless!
It took me a few dials to get the scope zero'd fairly well, but the target is the first five shots taken after the zero'ing was done. There was one flyer, which was no doubt shooter error, and the sight picture on that particular scope is probably the worst one I have, but even with that terrible scope, the shooting was, as far as I am concerned, GREAT.
THANK YOU RON!
EXCELLENT WORK!
-
My pleasure Lizzie. I'm so glad you're happy with it. Now you can guard those bird houses with confidence ;)
-
Always feels good when things work out for the better. Glad that Gertrude has been brought back to life.
-
Great job Ron!!
:D :D :D
-
Good job Ron... We gotta keep Miss Lizzie happy. You know she swings a mighty hammer don't ya?
-
OUTSTANDING!
With the R-1 being one of the original "Magnum" springers that must be a JOY to shoot now!
-

I'm tellin' ya....Ron is now my go-to guy for HW and Beeman. This is actually the first time I have needed any of my HW/Beeman guns worked on. Ron has the characteristics of a great gunsmith...attention to detail and perfectionism.

Outstanding, lizzie. Congrats to you and Ron both.
-
You PCP guys say what you want, there is nothing as fun as a sweet-running springer. And the rare folks who can sing to them are treasures!
Congrats!
-
Congratulations Miss Lizzie. Excellent Work Ron.
With her R1 back in action, those pesky starlings... had better stay well clear of Miss Lizzie's place.
If they show up now.... they will be like....dead ducks for dinner.
Bon Appétit ! ;)
Best Wishes - Tom

Yes sir Tom!
Stir-fry starling fajitas. ;D

I remember the R1 trip to Canada. Great story and glad she is well again.

Seriously....anyone with an HW or Beeman who wants a tune or other work done to an excellent standard, send it to Ron!

OK, I'm a moron... FWB means Friends With Benefits to me, help me out please Lizzie, what's an FWB? ???

HAHAHA! Friends with Benefits! Good one! ;D
FWB in airgun language refers to the Feinwerkbau, which was/ is a German manufacturer of FINE air rifles, and they are particularly well-known for building competition grade air rifles. They had a line called the 124 sporter that is desirable by many who love the German manufactured air rifles. I came across (and bought) one when I was still new in the airgunning world, without really knowing what it was, and have since acquired another from one of our members here (Nod), and they are both exceptional guns, as far as I am concerned.

Perhaps you should stop vising certain websites - ;)
As Lizzie stated, Feinwerkbau is a well established maker of airguns. My very first introduction to pellet pistols was through a friend who owned an FWB103 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/feinwerkbau-103?m=1419) (that's a link BTW).
I was blown away by that pistol. Even back then (ca. 1993 or so) that pistol costs around a thousand bucks!
So yeah, an FWB within this Forum is an entirely different thing.
BTW, here is a link to the FWB 124 that Lizzie was referring to - https://www.airgunsofarizona.com/spring-piston/feinwerkbau-fwb-sport/ (https://www.airgunsofarizona.com/spring-piston/feinwerkbau-fwb-sport/)
I am sooo jealous that Lizzie has one of them, but she so deserves one as well!!
;)

Great shooting Lizzie! Nice to see someone bragging on their R1 for a change instead of all the other guns out there. Is Gertrude a .177? What was the range to that fabulous bull?

Too funny. You're a character.

I hear the veal is really good too. :D

OH SNAP.... I meant Veal.
Meat... served in the casinos with the time of the Rat Pack
Darn spell check.... Now don't I look like a Dumkoff!
AGAIN!!!
-
Sorry for the derail Mrs. Lizzy.
Have you got a chrony to test the R1?
I am curious as to it compares to my R10.
-

Ahh
Veal. Baby cow. Very popular in Germany in the form of sausages.
I refuse to eat a baby cow, and therefore I refuse to eat Veal.
And now back to our regularly scheduled program -
Yes, as asked before, do you have any chrony readings (as if I didn't already know ;))
-
Congrats on your sweet like-new R1 Lizzie. Gertrude should probably consider getting a passport.
-
If there is one thing about this bunch, ya'll can wreck a laptop screen in just a few posts. Congrats to ya Lizzie. Glad Gertrude is back to her ol' self again.
-
You mean Gertrude is a gun?
Dang, I thought this whole time she was saying our buddy Ron (Gertrude) shoots like a girl... :o
But once Bayman got ahold of him everything was better.
Joking of course.
-
Fantastic news Liz!! Glad Ron was able to get your R1 back up to snuff. They are truly awesome rifles. Did he perform a post tune chrony string or close range accuracy test? Try not to break in the gun the first day,....you’ll wear us all out!!!😉

That may be a good idea! If we ever get to have another fun shoot, I may try to finally take Gertrude to one...hopefullt, she won't end up in Mexico this time!]

He did. I can't recall off the top of my head....seems like it was in the 860 range. I don't have a chrony of my own. Thankfully, Ron did much to break it in for me, and I have no doubt that is the case. She's shooting perfectly first time at the bench.

Yeah just a few. Like a hundred ten shot strings over the chronograph developing the tune and checking accuracy at 10 yards. I also dragged out my chrono for two trips to a 25 yard outdoor range where I spent a couple hours on the gun. I went through, two piston seals, three different springs and multiple guide and shim arrangements on each spring before I got it to where it is. I have three pages of targets at 25 yards and three pages of notes that were done over the course of testing three different springs and the multitude of arrangements. I ran almost 3 tins of pellets through it for testing and to run in the seal. A lot of threes here, hmmm. Anyway Because Lizzie uses them, I bought a tin of H&N FTT for final testing and seasoning the barrel after giving it good cleaning. I ran nearly the entire tin of FTT making sure the barrel was properly seasoned (accurate), and everything was stabilized. So at sea level the last string of ten shots with the FTT averaged 853, had an extreme spread of 11 and a standard deviation of 3. This work wasn't even all that had to be addressed on this gun. It had other significant issues too. So yeah its been checked post tune.

;) Nicely done and it seems that it was not that long ago that you first joined the forum. Lizzie is a great person and if you had to go above and beyond for anyone she is the right candidate for that.
Maybe I will drive over and drop off my D460 for a small dose of your TLC in the near future ;D ;D ;D

I concur, Lizzie is a doll. She has helped me several times over the last few years with login and account stuff. I really wanted to do the right thing by her and make her happy.

Well, you know what they say... Happy Lizzie, happy life.
Wait, that ain't it.... nevermind.

Not really... I seen some bikers so ugly that beer wouldn't wash it off. Both male and female.
Some of the best folks I ever met though.

The bikers I have known, and the ones I am friends with now, are generally rock solid as far as character goes. Many of them are what I consider the modern day equivalent of cowboys of old- the good ones, that is. ;)

LOL. It's just that they don't hold their alcohol nearly as well as they did in younger years.

Ok, so what we really want to see is some target results from the R1.
And, of course, a pic of Lizzie holding it!!
A veil is optional.
:D
-
Haha LOL
It will have to wait until next week- worked today, working tomorrow, expecting starling for breakfast on Monday. ;D

;) ;D ;D Lizzie you don't need a veil to hide from the Geritol brigade. But that R1 will definitely make you look even better

Actually I think it's the other way around.
Lizzie, wearing a veil, holding her R1 would be the hottest pic we've seen here in quite some time.
Maybe we should do a GTA Calendar!
Just sayin'

I don't know your granddaughter's age, but if she is old enough, you can find videos of sparrows killing bluebird and destroying their nests. That is what cured me.
