Title: New love for the HW30S
Post by: bReTt on January 11, 2021, 10:46:41 PM
I love my HW springers.  All of them.  Some are just better suited to me but I do appreciate every single one.

The HW30S in 177 was my second HW springer, the Beeman branded R9 (HW95) in 22 was my first.  The 30 came home at least a couple years after I had the R9 so it had a sporting chance to move it’s way into my heart.  I just never really warmed up to it.

Time went on and more air rifles were added along the way.  After a few spring guns end end up in the cabinet a pecking order started to form.  The R9/95s (3 total) rose to the top.  The 35, 50 and 30 floated just above the bottom.  I sold of the 35 and ended up giving the 50 and the 30 to two of my boys (13, 11).

A couple years go by and I’m getting an itch for a new air rifle.  Not knowing what I’m really wanting, I started to sniff around the classifieds.  I happen to run across a HW30S for sale.  I jumped on it!  Not sure why really other than filling that impulse to buy something airgun related.  I also knew Sean ( 8 ) had no problem handling the 30 on his own so I was thinking that this 30 would end up as his by this coming summer.

After delivery of the 30 from Texas, I had to try it out for function so I started running some wadcutter pellets through it.  Works great!  Now I find that I am grabbing this light plinker quite a bit.  I also find that this 30 has made its way into my spring gun heart and I now appreciate the HW30S much more now than I had in the past, so much so, I’m looking out to find another one to replace this one once I pass it over to Sean.

I found a new love for the HW30S!!!

I hope to find a reasonably priced gray laminate version someday.  I should have bought one when they were still available.  Oh well 😔

Good choice, but beware of the addiction to Weihrauch.

Or maybe five?

Be fore Christmas, my oldest son, 34, came over one without children in tow.

I was downstairs shooting the 95. He has never laid eyes on a German springer. He liked the 95.

Then I handed him my HW30. He took one shot, bullseye, then the next, and after the third one in a row he said, “ I have to have one.” I told him the bigger one is more powerful.
Nope, he wants a 30.

To the OP... Funny how that works !!!!  I love old Beeman R-1s in 22 cal.  I always detune them with a J.M soft tune.  Talk about a treat.  The weight everything makes for a great shooter.
The 30s is a sweet sweet gun which needs nothing well almost nothing , one does need lots and lots of pellets

Thanks for sharing you airgun adventure with us.

No no Yogi, I have been in that cycle before with PB. I know now I don’t need one of each. That’s why I bought a 22 barrel for my 95.

I am still intrigued by the HW50. My next will be either a 30 or 50, a silver one. But I any more than three will be too many. I cant stand guns that sit and do not get used.

The 30 is amazing. A compete novice can pick it up and shoot accurately, yet the most experienced who have them love them as much as any.

I think the HW30/R7 is one of the best RIFLES of ANY kind air or otherwise as long as your end goals are shooting enjoyment more so then practical uses.  Keep in mind that I am a pleasure shooter, especially as far as airguns go. If I need/want power or long range etc. I have plenty of powder burners for that.

The HW30/R7 is sort of the 10/22 of the airgun world only made much much nicer with a MUCH nicer trigger.

We actually started our HW collection with the 30 and only recently added the 95, but starting with the HW30 is probably why we have so many HWs, now. Yeah, it really is hard to add anything that hasn't already been said by so many shooters about the HW30/R7.We long passed the point of having even more springers than we can shoot on a regular basis, but the HW30 is one of the reasons some of the other springers don't get shot that much.

We have two HW 30s. One is a deluxe that wears a Williams peep for days when I'm in the mood to shoot irons and the other is the grey lam which wears a scope. Of the two, I shoot the grey laminate the most. Just gives the little 30 a bit of extra heft which I like. Either way, I will never be without a 30. Most used springer for us, by far.

Since you're loving and thinking again, lemme stick a bug in your ear, Mr. never owned/shot a .20...lol. Consider an HW30s in .20 caliber regardless of what the detractors of the caliber will likely have to say.

Yes, I own one although mine is an R7 Huntington Beach. If you missed it, the story on how I got that rifle is here: https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=174558.0 (https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=174558.0)

Good read on your travels to get to this point and owning my R7 .20 has had me considering on and off getting one in .177 to go with it.

I went backwards.  My first springer was a tuned Santa Rosa R1. My latest is a Hw30. To fill it all out ill need to get a 35, 50. And a 95...not certain if ill actually do that.

HA.   I went opposite.  A gray laminate with an aperture sight and a silver deluxe with a scope.  They both shoot lights out.

I have two .177 caliber HW30S'.  One wears a Williams peep sight and the other wears a Hawke 2-7x32 scope.  I thoroughly enjoy them both; however, neither compare to my Beeman R7 with her 2-7 Hawke scope.

I just got a Beeman R7 in .177 from a guy in CA.  I replaced the Bushnell Banner scope with a Hawke Airmax 3-9x40.  I bought it thinking my wife and son’s girlfriend would enjoy shooting it.  It’s small and light and doesn’t fit me as well as my HW95.  But after getting the scope dialed at 25 yards on Sunday, I want an HW30 as well.  It’s just a pleasure to shoot.

Order now while the desire is hot!  Ha ha

I went through a stage where I wanted a 22 cal 30.  That want is starting to grow again....

Listen here mister.....   :o

I sure the.20 is fantastic.  That means that I would have to have 3 of each model!  I need a second job. 😱

My Hw30s are by far my favorite rifles including the dozen or so PBs. To the guy comparing it to a Ruger 1022, you're right if comparing it to popularity but wrong if comparing it in quality. The Rugers are made like garbage compared to any Weihrauch. I know I have a 1022 and had several other Rugers rifles. Only their older high end stuff is worth buying. All their current stuff has serious QC issues. Some of them shoot ok, less of them good and most poorly. Especially their "American" economy rifle line.

Title: Get one in 22
Post by: SteveD on January 17, 2021, 12:56:23 PM
I have many many spring guns in various power levels including most of the HWs. My peep sighted HW30 is great, but gets overshadowed by my R8. Along came a late model 30 in 22, so why not try something new.
Only mid 400 FPS, but that is into 6 pump territory with a vintage crosman 1400. I tuned for smoothness and put a Leupold 2-7 compact re-parallaxed for 15 yards on it and gave it a go. Oh what fun! Those 22 pellets smacking a soda can produces way more action than the 177. Just a lot of plinking fun.

Ok peoples, here it is.

A little while ago I was on the edge to buy the gray laminate stocked version of the HW30S.  I really considered getting it in .22 cal.  I made a post about it ( https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=170861.msg155919851#msg155919851 (https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=170861.msg155919851#msg155919851) ) and as time went by I curbed my desire to purchase the laminate 30 in .22.

Well, more time has passed and I find myself not able to get the gray laminate 30 new anymore so I posted a WTB ad for one.  Crickets 🦗.....

So now, after recently buying the used .177 30, I decided that I was truly enjoying this little gun but I had in mind to give this one to one of my boys (Sean) from the beginning.  So I’m trying to keep from buying another gun that I don’t need and I was doing ok for a bit.  Then the FWB sport starts getting a lot of attention around here and gets me moving in that direction.   I was strong and resisted buying one (even though I nearly caved in a handful of times over the past week) and then I see this response in this very thread 🧵

That brings back the desire for a .22 cal HW30S flooding back in and now I follow exactly that advice.... I ordered a new HW30S with the new style stock (I like the look) in .22 cal from AoA just this morning!  I’m so excited!

I already have a Leupold 3-9x33 efr scope so I may try that on the 30 after it arrives.  Really I’m hoping to just keep the iron sights on it but maybe I’ll like that scope on the rifle.  If I do I will plan on purchasing a second scope to mount back on the HW77K where the scope sits now.

Anyway, just thought that I would add that I have buckled under the pressure and bought a new 30 in .22.  Sean will be receiving the .177 here soon but probably not until the .22 gets here first.  Then we can both go out and snipe some menacing tin cans with our pellet cannons!!!

You will love the 22. I had read reports of folks who bought one because they had so many other guns and “needed” something different. I look at it as a gun for the aficionado. Those 22s hit hard considering the velocity and mine isn’t pellet fussy at all. Deadly accurate at 20 yards and especially deadly on invading tin cans. It just puts a smile on my face. I’m thinking of recommending one to a friend for bird control inside a barn where over penetration would be a problem. I thought the new ones were out of stock. Keep us posted.

Tracking for the .22 cal 30 shows expected delivery this Friday!  I’m really looking forward to it arrival.

Now this is just a thought but I would like to try and put up a video review of the .22 version of this rifle so that any others that may think that they want to try it they would have a reference to start from.  It’s a good intention but we all know how real life can get in the way sometimes.

I only have 3 different .22 cal pellets to test when it arrives.  I’ll see which one does the best and how good it actually is and then figure if I’ll need to order some pellets for it.  Hopefully it will like what I already have on hand and keep stocked up.

This thread keeps popping up in my “new replies to my post” feed.  I figured that I would add to this since I’ve had my .22 HW30S for a few years now.

I absolutely love it in .22.  It’s it probably my most fun airgun.

If anyone wants a superb plinker, this is one to seriously consider.  It really kicks those cans and it will be precise enough for small groups at 25 yards and under.

I have one in 177cal that has a Paul Watts advanced tune and later a Vortek kit in it. St shoots perfectly and I changed out the old original R7 stock of Huntington beach design to the Italian newer flavor. Deadly accurate and just over 700 fps with 7.3gra JSBs. Last year i just bought a HW30s in 22cal. It now has a Vortek kit in it . 13 coils of .113 wire .730 OD and its shooting just over 8ft pounds and 9 ft pounds with those non lead 11.75gr  GTO pellets. Thats 595fps!!!  It has the Rem peep sight that Bayman talked about .Love them both.

My mistake --19.5 coils polished end.  So thats the .113 wire thickness .730 OD spring from Vortek. 545fps with JSB RS 13.4gr pellets and 600fps with the GTO 11.75gr pellets. 9ft/ lb!
