Got myself an HW30 awhile back and am very happy with the way the gun shoots. Right out of the box it was smooth and quiet with a nic trigger. I may eventually tinker with it but not yet. But what I would like some ideas on is spiffying it up a bit. Does anybody have any suggestions or pictures of what they may have done to theirs? It is finished respectably as it comes but it is sort of plain.
-
You could cut checkering on the stock?
-
Like this?
-
I tried stipling a Chinese rifle around the pistol grip I had a while back. It turned out really nice. The tools needed were a foredom tool and small diamond ball bits. That Chinese wood was super hard. Then I stained that area very dark and finished the whole thing up. Really the hardest part was cutting in a clean outline to do the stipling in.

Rowan set-back trigger. Brass safety buttons. Custom /semi-custom stock. All easily doeable. How much money you want to spend? ;D

Like Yogi says,
How much dough you wanna blow, Joe?

The ultimate stock for an HW30,,,,,,,,, a walnut tyrolean. There is one hiding somewhere in a piece of walnut. Hope you can find it before I do.

Good luck on that Bob as I'm on that search as well!! :D
Bill - So you want to pimp your 30, eh? No harm there, I understand.
Here's one way if you want to spend the bucks. Beeman R7 Deluxe stock.
https://www.pyramydair.com/product/beeman-r7-air-rifle-stock?a=4855 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/beeman-r7-air-rifle-stock?a=4855)
And then if you're handy you can modify this buttplate to fit. I'm working on one myself, and it ain't easy I tell you. I'm almost there with it though.
https://www.amazon.com/Bisley-Adjustable-Buttplate-Recoil-Rubber/dp/B007WFJY3K (https://www.amazon.com/Bisley-Adjustable-Buttplate-Recoil-Rubber/dp/B007WFJY3K)
You can trigger it.
https://www.krale.shop/en/trigger-unit-v-mach-weihrauch/ (https://www.krale.shop/en/trigger-unit-v-mach-weihrauch/)
You can sling it.
You can peep it.
You can silence it.
AND.....if you really want to go all-out ULTIMATE, you can do this.
Someday I will do this!! :P

Aaaaaaah. Money!!! Not real sure at the moment but I might have to do it in steps. Getting that Beeman stock might be a start. Then maybe do a little personal refinishing on that before I install it. Peep sights are probably a no go for these old eyes. I had them on a .22 PB rifle and had to finally give up.
Some neat suggestions. That trigger looks nice but may be a last option at that price. I would prefer to invest effort rather than a lot of money but I know sometimes you have to swallow hard.
Just looking for ideas right now.

$$$ Indeed!!
The R7 Deluxe stock is definitely a nicety, but not a necessity.
What Weihrauch delivers right out of the box is just about right for most people. I was just showing you the extremes, especially the V-Mach trigger. You can do a very minor tweak of the Rekord trigger that will yield you similar results.
I will suggest what most others here will, and that is to just shoot it as is for a while. Say, about a thousand pellets or so. Let it settle in. It may turn out that you decide to nothing at all with it. Don't let all those other "must change this thing" thoughts get into your head.
Do some people immediately jump right in to a new HW30 and change it up? Yes. I have. But it was for a very good reason and I knew what I was doing for the purpose intended. I took a brand new HW30S, straight from Krale, and put in a Vortek PG3HO spring and Vacseal piston seal. Even the spring itself was modified (cut one coil shorter) in order to achieve its intended purpose, which was to deliver a very nice, smooth shooting, accurate rifle to a person who has a shoulder problem.
That being said, I also own three unmodified HW30's from the mid '70's, two of which have the original leather piston seals. The only one of those that I've even messed with is the one with the sling, using a newer stock as a "donor" so as not to ruin the originality of the stock that came with it. That rifle is my ARH HW30S-X.
These rifles really need nothing at all. Unless you want bling, and bling costs $$.
A nice spring kit will help. It's like replacing the original shocks on your sports car with KYB's. Much nicer feel all around.
A personalized trigger tune will help as well, but really, after doing a dozen or so Rekord trigger tunes myself, just a proper cleaning, relube and adjustment is all that is necessary.
Bling does nothing to improve the rifle other than the mental aspect of it. A nicer stock, a silencer, all of that sort of thing is just something to make it seem "better' in the hands of the beholder.
I can shoot just as well with my most bare-bones vintage '70's unmodified, leather sealed HW30 as I can with my blinged out, scoped or peeped, springed-up, silenced or not, newest 2019 model HW30.
As you said, I suggest doing it in steps, as you think necessary or preferable.
A little goes a long way. Start with a trigger clean/lube. To me, the trigger is the most important part to accuracy. And when I mentioned a "personalized" trigger tune above, I meant for you to do it to your liking.
Do keep an eye out for the cocking link galling/grinding issue though, and stay on top of the stock screw tightness. they tend to loosen up.
Let us know if you need further advice on that, or any other aspect.
JMHA :D
-
...although at first when my HW30s came into my possession I liked them for their tidyness and size and feel thinking the stocks could use swirl and flare.
But now I actually LIKE the original stocks because they got lighter and darker in time to grow more flare on their own! ::)

No fun without fun tickets! ;D
Do you have a machine shop, lathe, etc... if no and no money honey all you can do is shoot the sucker. Practice, practice, practice. 8)

Hi Duckfish,
That is a handsome stock. Did you make it yourself? Is it walnut? Was it made from a blank, or was it semi-finished like James Maccari sells?
Why is your peep sight mounted so far forward?
-
The peep has the twilight apature. It's larger so you can mount it forward, it works like a ghost ring.
The stock was made by Scott Blair, 3 kinds of wood and hand checkering. I have the Beeman sight hole cover, and a silver trigger guard. It was tuned by Billy Kizzy. And purchased from Kingfish, John Chippis. Ask me how it shoots.
-
How does it shoot? :P
-
Hey Ed,
I want that stock ;D
-
You can't have it. I want it.
-
If going price for a replacement stock is $149.99 for a plain jane Beech stock, I'd really hate to see how much they'd be asking if they used better quality wood. I know my Hatsans are no match in build quality compared to my German rifles, but my Model 95's and Webley Tomahawks (I now have all 4 back) all had/have very pretty chunks of Turkish Walnut for stocks under that blahhh factory finish and are gorgeous refinished. Ask Kirk, he's done a few himself and knows :)
That said, I've wandered some looking for custom made stuff and unless you want to drop $300+ for something (Custom Stocks in the UK comes to mind: https://www.customstock.co.uk/customshop/ (https://www.customstock.co.uk/customshop/) ) trying to refinish what it came with is the way less expensive option which still brings into play trying to refinish Beech which is a pain. Again, ask Kirk, he knows...lol
-
I like the hw30s with the plain Jane stock just fine. Paying$150 more to change the stock to the better stock, it makes more sense just to buy an r7 to begin with.
The hw30s deluxe at AOA is $289.99. is just about $40 more than getting the regular hw30s from Krale shipped at about $250.
If I wanted a nicer stock with the rifle, I think it's better to just start by getting one like say the laminated editions from AOA or the R7 or hw30s deluxe version. You end up saving a lot more money in the end.
-
Thanks Steve,
You sure took the fun out of my daydreams about a pretty stock. But I get it. Nice stock work costs money. I have shopped around enough for stocks for various rifles over the years and pretty ain't cheap. I also don't find the stock on my HW30 to be ugly just a bit on the plain side.

I had a few myself about something for my HW95 and love the CS700 Thumbhole skeleton stock they sell, I'm just not ready to drop $450 to get one...lol. I've refinished a couple Beech stocks and while it can be a pain and takes time, the effort is worth it for making that stock your own. Talk to Kirk aka SpiralGroove as he's done all his and turned out some beautiful stocks.

Wow, that is even better, why did they offer to you for same price? I see on the website they are more money. I wanted the stainless from mundilar but they were out of stock, so I didn't want to wait.

Don't know, When I told them I wanted to order a hw30 deluxe, he asked if I would be interested in a laminate for the same price.

Just buy an early model R7. Beautiful stock, checkering, no safety and warning info. palm swell. beeman marking on butt pad.
-
Or you can buy a Boyd uninletted Blaster stock and have it inletted.
-
It's really a BUMMER that Richards Microfit Stocks, Inc. doesn't offer in-letting for Weihrauch airgun stocks.
-
With the immense popularity of the hw30s/r 7 model you would think they would be more aftermarket stocks available for it.
-
Richard,
That is an interesting suggestion. I will have to checkout that stock.
-
I would LOVE to see an HW30 in a Tyrolean stock!!
Would be sooo cute! :D

Richard,

Proceed to Boyds, sir, and type uninlet (not uninletted) in the search bar---the Boyds Blaster is about $110 (Nutmeg, Forest Camo, and black/grey), if I am not mistaken. Add $15 for the not-so-basic colors.
This one is for the Boyds Blaster, right hand:

I hope it shows!
-
The link does show for every design ;D
-
The only thing that has me scratching my head is the cut back area on the bottom of the stock where the Ruger 10/22 action/ trigger group mounts. I have a Boyd's stock on my 10/22 although it is not the Blaster. I will have to check how it lines up with the action on my HW30.
-
I think Tony Mele would be able to make a stock for the HW30.
His work is absolutely a gem (got 3 of his 10/22 stocks) and is a master when it comes to laminates...The finish of his creations look showroom and they are scratch-resistant.
If there's a bunch of you who would commission him to produce some I am sure he would go for it.
The fit will be perfect ;D
Also, a Rowan adjustable buttplate would make the TM stock more gorgeous.
If you would incorporate the cost of the Boyd + inletting fees + shipping, then the amount would almost be identical...Come to think of it, his Avenger sporter stock for the 10/22 was only $175, IIRIC..His "blemished" versions were so much cheaper, and you could not even find the defects on them..At least, this was what the buyers of his blemished stocks commented on..I bought the A1 TM stocks though and have none of the so called stocks with anomalies.
His laminates are more vibrant in color and unlike I have seen from any other laminate stock producers.
FOOTNOTE:
I was actually thinking of getting that UK-made adjustable buttplate when he was making my 10/22 stocks.
-
I think this color, a Tony Mele creation and not mine, would look super attached to an HW 30 stainless action:

Check out the finish, guys 8) ;D
These 2 are mine:

Also love this color (not mine):

Now your HW30s would not look so plain anymore ::) ;D

Boy howdy, there's nothing like an expertly cut in checkering job on a stock to trick out a rifle! There are gunsmiths all around the country who have the skills and technology to get that done without going overboard. Might cost as much or more than the rifle's original cost, I would reckon.
Or a guy could get the tools, and with some practice...I see that there is quite a selection of old gun stocks for practicing on, and tools on Ebay for very reasonable prices. There are also many tutorials on the World Wide Web to help one get 'er done!

I have a 1959 HW55M that had a badly beaten up stock. To the point where I had to literally remove (sand down) most of the the checkering on the right hand side of the stock.
I bought all the checkering tools, files, diff angels of such that I bought from Brownells, but I just don't have the patience, or maybe even the talent to finish it out.
If anyone knows of a good "Stocksmith", please let me know. I would really like to have this Bavarian stock back on my HW55.
I am truly embarrassed to show this, but this is where I had to leave off.

Other than gunsmiths who do stock work, a furniture shop might be able to do it.
Etsy has individuals who are craftsmen and hobbyists who can do this kind of thing. I was able to find one within my area.
-
Aside from craftsmen and hobbyists, I was able to find out a true artisan who lives 5 or so miles away from me:
https://doantrevor.com/
He looks expensive but look at his stocks! ;D
I did exchange texts with this gent sometime in Nov. 2019.
Another reputable gunsmith is my go-to gent when it comes to Cerakote and also in Abq.:

Thanks Rick. I'll check that out. :D
-
Dennis,
I looked at the photos of your Hw 55 Tyrolean a lot over the weekend. This morning I went to the shed and found a 3"X 9" X 40" walnut plank that had been drying for 10 plus years. I ran it through my portable planer and laid out a Tyrolean stock. I have it rough sawn and the barrel channel is routed in. The trigger slot and clearance for the cocking linkage iare cut also. One side needs resawn to remove the excess wood leaving the Tyrolean cheek plate.
BTW, I have no success in post photo here.
BobH.
I would LOVE to see an HW30 in a Tyrolean stock!!
Would be sooo cute! :D
-
Bob - I'm still house sitting for a friend, but I'll get you dim's on the cheek piece as soon as I can. ;)
Dennis
-
Hi Folks,
I worked on the Hw30- R7 Tyrolean stock today. The pad is on and the trigger guard is inlayed. There is a lot of walnut to remove. Someday I hope that I can sy, " It fits me!"
BobH.
-
Nicely done Bob, that looks SWEET !
-
Bob,
Put your sight on it. Your head has to line up exactly for the Tyrollean to be effective. Once in the cup, you have no wiggle room with your cheek weld.
Nice start!

-
Yogi,
I'm at the slow progress stage now, I'm committed to the stock Hw30 front peep sight. Next week, I have a new rear peep for it. The line of sight is determined by the sights and shooting distance. There will be a whole bunch of fit, file and fire to do. For now, I have the stock sights on it, the windage won't change much and the elevation is very close. I'll be S.O.L. if I lose a bunch of weight. It is currently weight in at 8.2 pounds. The low oversized forearm feels really nice, that radius just lays in the palm of my hand. The recoil pad may get changed to a curved adjustable Morgan style.
The down side is, it will not fit my "left eye dominate" wife. Granny and I may end up with a pair of Tyroleans, "Hers and His."
BobH.

Wow! That is EXACTLY what I would like to do with my HW30 -- a Boyd's laminate in nutmeg (or pepper). Or even better, put one of those on a stainless HW30 (but then I would still have an extra plain Jane lying around).
Any idea on who could be hired to do the inletting? Would that involve shipping my rifle back and forth to the inletter?
-
You can silence it.
The HW30 is relatively quiet but quieter would be even better.
Where does one get that moderator? How much quieter does it make the HW30?

You might want to reach out to this gent (Mr. George Gillispie).
He is quite popular in the Rimfire Central Forum.
He also has a duplicator.
http://www.sonorangunstocks.com/ (http://www.sonorangunstocks.com/)
Also Mr. Tony Mele (he is my 1st choice actually) of Rhode Island, the gent who did those laminate stocks in my posted (photos)---his contact number is 401 447 3069, and tell him Rick Runez of NM sent you ;D
Mr. Mele is an incredible craftsman.
His stocks are extremely precise and very close-tolerance.
Same gent who makes Joe Chacon's ABRA BR stocks but the design is exclusive to Mr. Joe
His finish is like that of a European sports car, I tell you, sir!
Frankly, he is not even expensive.
If there are "hordes" of you who will order from him his creations would come out much cheaper.
I think ordering the whole shebang from him rather than let him inlet a Boyd stock would actually come out cheaper.
I do not have an HW30 but I will buy one if Mr. Mele creates a stock for it---I also would like a thumbhole design.
http://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/chacon-custom-creation.3943800/ (http://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/chacon-custom-creation.3943800/)
The stocks were made by Mr. Mele.
Click on the red X marks and you will see the photos of his laminate BR stocks.

I like the super sculpted curvy rear of the stock with the brutal angle of the forestock. It works good. I want one.

That Tyro stock looks so comfy I might fall asleep while shooting it :o ;D
-
I installed Bisley adjustable butt pads on our HW30 and R7. The little stocks are too straight, requiring me to scrunch my neck down and raise my shooting shoulder up to see through the scope. An adjustable pad solves that issue for me. Warning: takes a lot of time, work and patience to make them fit really nice. I also installed B-square bubble levels. The R7/HW30 has a loopy trajectory. Keeping the gun level and not canted to one side or the other is important when aiming high at distant targets.
-
How does it shoot? :P
It's a serious shooter.
