Title: Built my 1300kt rifle
Post by: bantam5s on April 24, 2019, 10:18:29 PM
Well minus the rear sight that I'm waiting to become available , the American boy rifle is complete.
Maybe not 100% done because I may do a little reshaping of the stock here and there but I'll decide after I've actually been able to do some shooting with it.

(https://i.postimg.cc/3xV88qTm/IMG-20190424-180528575.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/0zGRZcry)
(https://i.postimg.cc/L8YSbV1X/IMG-20190424-181415746.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/75kjC0X8)
It took 3 trips to the hardware store for the screw, one wasn't long enough, and the next being a bit long I accidentally trimmed too much , the third I just added some extra washers to make up for the length.

It's not perfect by any stretch, but it wouldn't suit me if it was perfect.
If it was nobody would believe I did any of the work on it  ;D

.177, how fast I don't know.
Whatever a 18" barrel 1377 / 1300kt does.
I tossed a scope on it ( holding the scope when I pump ) and have been testing it on 4 pumps.
It goes through a soup can at 15yds on 4 pumps with Crosman 7.4 grain points.

I had it in my mind to cut the barrel back to 16" but 18" seems perfect so I'm leaving it.

The Williams 5dag is out of stock even on their website, but PA and AGD have it available for backorder so I guess that means they're not discontinued.

I'll get one as soon as they're available for sure.
It really stinks that I had one ordered for a great price and my order was refunded for some reason, I'm not upset with the seller just bummed.
That was a couple weeks ago though so it's all in the past.

Forgive me if I didn’t catch it somewhere. But did you try from Crosman ?  I ended up with an extra LPA Mim because I always order my customs with one since hey are cheap from them.....   I will admit right here and now that I even like the Daisy Peep which is cheep and the Daisy Avanti rear diopter too but that one costs as much as the Williams.

I don't think the sight crosman offers is the 5dag is it ?

I've got the Daisy 5899 on two guns already and it's a nice sight in my opinion , I just wanted to go with something different on this gun.

You know I think you are right ! The ones they have have the micrometer adjustment instead of the low profile screws like the LPA.     I prefer the micros but on a hunting build it might be a little too busy!

Those look nice, but I didn't want the extra expense for click adjustable knobs when I don't adjust my sights often.
Set it and forget it screw adjustment works fine for me.
If they're not in stock somewhere soon then I may look for the fp-ag I think it is.

You mean to tell us you finally built your dream gun and don't have any construction or build pics for all of us?
It looks great for sure.  One like it is on my short list for someday :)

Thanks

I was too excited to just get it built  ;D
It's pretty straightforward though.
Cut, nip, slowly route, drill, and assemble.

I went ahead and added a white spacer to the stock

I also added a bit of relief to the stock to get better access to the bolt handle.

If anyone is wondering, the safety has to come out for the trigger guard to fit through the stock.
It's removed by putting a pick through this slot behind the trigger and lifting that spring up , the safety will then drop right out.

The WGRS-54 sights work and look quite nice on the Custom Shop Guns.

I also make the front sight adjustable by using a 6/32 allen set screw and a short piece of the allen wrench that fits it glued
into the set screw.  I use a 6/32 black nut to hold the set screw in place, this makes a smaller front sight that works good with
the rear peep.
Sorry I don't have a better picture.

Ah ha just what I have always wanted! Total two thumbs up! The QB78 and 13xx got together and had a child! With a good scope for gathering the night time light, and a TKO it would be a rattus killing machine!

Well done.

In my opinion it's everything the 760 should have and could have been, after all the Canadian boy which inspired this build was the inspiration behind the 760.

The world of airguns as we know it today would probably not exist without the 760 having made way for so many crosman airguns, but I do with Crosman could at least have found a way to produce this rifle.
The Canadian factory did after all, and they could have revisited it after the 760 saved them.

Turns out that the scope I had on this gun is no good, one direction of adjustment seems to throw the other off.
I threw on a centerpoint I had laying around and out of what I have it likes the crosman premier destroyers.
I expect it will probably like CPHP'S even better when I have a chance to pick some up.

I still don't really like it with a scope especially this longer one,  but it's got me shooting it for now.
If the 5d-ag isn't available by the end of next week I guess I'll go with the wgrs 54.

It sure would if I was a scope kind of guy.

Oh that reminds me that I've never measured it's overall length, I'll have to do that when I get home from work.
I'm guessing 36", we'll see how right I am later.

Did it come with that stock or is that from another gun?

The 5D-SH sights have been out of stock on every site I could find for something like a couple months now.  I can't imagine they would discontinue them.  I just hope when they have another batch made they don't jack the price up.

Stock and trigger assembly are for a 2260.
Here's the stock as it arrived, plus my trigger assembly added.

Then cut, but I had to nip the end back a bit further than that to clear when pumping. I also rounded and thinned the grip a little , as they come they're huge and really square and uncomfortable.

There are some minor issues that don't show up in these pictures, but I'm not a perfectionist.

Thank you for the compliment.

The minor issues are just with the wood so I don't mind much.

Oh btw, it's 34" exactly.
I was close on my 36" guess, but as my dad always says close only counts with horseshoes and hand grenades.

Oh man you had me upset there for a second since I just broke down and ordered a wgrs54.
That's the 5dsh for Sheridan's, what I wanted was the 5dag that attaches to a standard 3/8 dovetail rail and is still out of stock on every website I check including Midway USA.

I decided to go with the wgrs54, it seems alright for $40.
I'm not sure how I'll like the use of dovetail joints for adjustment or if I'll need a taller front sight, but if I do I can certainly come up with something for the front.

I look forward to hearing how you like it.  I bought a couple of the 5d-AG's for my break-barrels, and I wished I went the wgra54 route instead, because it looks more compact.

Knowing I will pretty likely need a longer front sight I decided to do something about it.
My solution was to make a few different lengths of interchangeable blades.
I started by cutting some pieces from an old blow moulded tool case
(https://i.postimg.cc/vBWYnPjq/IMG-20190430-140044803.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/gX2bFKG8)

I nipped the front blade off and flushed everything up.
(https://i.postimg.cc/pXkdk6d3/IMG-20190430-135751157.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/BXLsnNHC)
Next I made a slot with a drill and needle file.
(https://i.postimg.cc/1XByC8yD/IMG-20190430-151004837.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/30yMWJ4w)

Cut out my 3 inserts, one the factory height then a medium height and one much taller.
(https://i.postimg.cc/5N94HSmg/IMG-20190430-151014283.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/JtgVvJvH)
Last I just drilled the hole to attach my blade via a pin.

Sure, as long as it's not that mystery Chinese pallet wood used on a lot of springers  ;D
I don't know what kind of wood this is.

Im happy with how the front sight came out, I just hope one of the 3 I made is the right length.
Ideally I'd like to be dead on with the adjustments of the rear right about In the middle, just to give me plenty of up or down to work with.

Great work on the design of the front sight. It's very cool.  And maybe a solution when using a peep sight that requires a higher front sight?

I should have removed some wood near my bolt handle when I built mine. I noticed you did. Did you go with the extra screw holding the action to the stock or are you going to gamble on those couple threads. Even a 1377 pistol has 2 anchors to the tube. My bolt knob rests right on the wood.

Just one screw for now till I can find the right screw, I'm not sure the hardware store has one as it was hard enough finding one long enough for the front.
I just hope I can get the hole drilled perfectly.

I don't know if the same thing I used for the front will be long enough.

The fit didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped, but I decided to nip off the butt of the grip and add a grip cap with white spacer.
I think it looks okay and adds a little something extra to the gun.
I also reshaped the grip since they come really fat and oversized.

Alright thanks.
I can always cut it if necessary, but getting one long enough is the issue.
It took 3 trips to the hardware screw to get one long enough for the front.
Lucky it's within a mile from me in my tiny little tow.

It’s an 8/32 screw. Mine is 1.54” long. I recessed a flat spot in the wood so the screw would sit flush with the plastic trigger guard. Here is a pic so you can see where to drill. I glass bedded the back of my tube but that might not be necessary.

I guess the trigger guard slot on my gun was a bit longer because I had no room to drill my hole, I went right into the trigger guard slot.

My solution was some JB Steel stik, and a 3/4 aluminum spacer tube.
I had to basically bed my trigger guard / housing into the stock then bed in the 3/4 aluminum spacer tube.
That tab on the back of the trigger guard was removed so I could get the steel stik in there, but it doesn't really show with a little black paint on the steel stik.
It's not perfect but it's functional.
And yes as it turns out I used the same screw I've got in the front.

Man I like these
Go for it.
The 1300kt was around $125 shipped, the stock $30 something shipped, the complete trigger assembly about $45 shipped, then about $10 in hardware and you're all set if you don't plan to use some scope you've already got or something.
I think my total not counting the extra screws the wood stain and the router bit was about $250.
You can get a nice vintage crosman, Benjamin, or Sheridan user for that much , but no matter how great they are this little carbine they are not.

I wish I had wood working skills to speak of - that is such a sweet rifle!

Thank you.

Now I really don't so if I could do it you can too.
I don't have the skills to get a professional looking finish on a gun stock.

Made a longer extended bolt handle since the factory botl handle is kind of small.
Maybe not the way everyone would go, but my solution was to mould one out of some steel stick putty onto a screw then paint it.

I'm always going to nitpick at my own work because I know and can see things that don't really show up on camera, but it's a fun little gun and that's what matters most.

I love how your gun turned out; man that looks awesome! And I really like that rear sight you put on it; how are you liking it so far? I love that it doesn't over the sides of the breech block like the other peeps do; much less likely to snag on things I would imagine.

It came with a .93 aperture which is larger than I'd like, but overall I love the sight.
Easy to adjust with 1/4 turn of a small screwdriver, nice and slim fitting well to the rifle, and was priced right.

I thought I had posted an update a couple years ago when I scrapped the 1st stock and started over, but apparently not.
Well other changes have been made since then , and some just recently so I figured I'd post an update on my " American Boy "

Beyond replacing the stock, it now has a gen1 marauder trigger group, a brass piston from  Alchemy , an aluminum barrel band from Maverick Custom, and an aluminum lefty breech from I believe alchemy as well.
I also made an extended and forward bent bolt handle for it too which is really just a cosmetic thing but I really like it.

The gun was down for well over a year though, because accuracy pretty much disappeared and it took me awhile to figure out that the front sight was loose.

Recently I went looking for a front sight and there just aren't really many good options that are traditional and not just plastic,  plus it had to mount securely.
I ended up settling for the daisy 953 front sight assembly and the gun inadvertently turned into kind of psuedo target rifle.
With the height of the front sight I ended up needing to make the leather cheek riser pad last week to gain just a little bit of height.

With all this the gun fits me extremely well, the trigger is great, and it's a tack driver.
I also accomplished my goal of basically eliminating all the plastic except for the butt plate.
