Title: A Fun Poll
Post by: Smaug2 on September 23, 2017, 06:31:40 PM
Assume you could have whatever scope, mounts and tune you want. Since it's your only airgun, it may as well be just-so.

For my part, I think I'd go with a .22 Diana 52, with a Hawke Sidewinder 30 10x42 scope and Diana drooper mount.

Zero with Polymags at 25 yards, and it would be a pesting MACHINE.

You forgot the HW97K in any caliber.
I wouldn't trade my HW97K .20 with the Nikko-Stirling Targetmaster 6-24X50 for anything.

How did you pick those guns to be in your poll--why isn't your list longer?

Other: HW30S/R7

There's too many to list. Someone will always find something that's not on the list.

I didn't put HW30s/R7 on the list because I think a lot of people would want something more powerful, if it were to be their only airgun.

I chose other because...
I would choose to have several more airguns.   ;D

Imagine living life with only one singular screwdriver....

Three of the choices are basically the same gun.

The choice probably varies on any given day...I currently own two D34's (.177/.22) and they're everything they should be...just what do I want to accomplish *that* day.

I'd vote other.

My one German gun of choice would be my HW55MM.  It has the ease of a break barrel and accuracy of a fixed barrel.  Medium size and power with a few tweaks.  Walnut stock and heavy barrel sleeve.  It can hunt, plink and even hang with the FT guns!  ;D

+1 ;D

Absent that, an HW 50 is the closest thing.  You can muscle it up to 13.5 fpe in .22, or have the smoothest 11.5 ever in .177.
Backyard friendly too.  You can carry it all day and still take the 40 yard shot.  If I lived in the Boonies, might be a different answer.

I'll keep my Walther Parrus in .22.

I wouldn't hit a dog in the backside with my finicky Diana 34. Worst gun in the corral.

Jeremy..I think a lot about an Diana/RWS 54 Air King in 22cal with Nice Glass and a Diana Bullseye ZR Scope Mount.  I doubt if I'll ever own one.  Just wishful thinking on my part, is all.  Something to Think about !   Best Wishes  -  Tom

Hey Tom - would you need a ZR mount and the anti-recoil sled of the Diana 54 at the same time?  Anti-anti recoil?

I would need some help voting.

Which is the one that weighs about 7 pounds with a 30mm 6.5-20X42 Hawke AO scope, has beautiful workmanship, requires about 25 pounds of force to cock and pushes a JSB Jumbo Heavy .22 at around 875 fps, accuracy in the order of half an inch at 50 yards, and has no hold sensitivity at all. Which German springer am I thinking of?

Mark:
Yes. I have talked with a tuner at PA and he said that it was developed for that gun. The sled built on the gun works for the shooter and the sled on the mount saves the scope. From all I have read (I have no hands on experience ) the RWS 54 Air King is a proven scope killer of even good scopes. The actual owners of this gun would Know more than I and have a more Informed Response based on Real Experience with this Gun. I DO have the Bullseye ZR Mount though, on My Benjamin Trail NP 1100XL and LIKE IT A LOT !  That gun broke 2 HIGH Quality Scopes of the original owner and a Hammers & CP scope that I put on it. I got the scopes exchanged under warranty. I had ordered the Bullseye mount from PA but was on a waiting list about 4 months before I received it. Once I put the Bullseye mount on ALL scope problems Ceased and Accuracy Improved.     Best Wishes - Tom Wood

JoeV..yes Walther Parrus, that is an intriguing gun. Might get to one with some luck. Never should have sold my LGV Challenger ultra 😦 what a mistake that was!

Offhand I would say this is beautiful Fraulein Helga's rifle, because you will only find this one in your dreams!   ;D

Other. Evidently you don't consider a Walther German? I've owned or shot most of the ones you listed. None of them are as consistently accurate as my Walther LGV.

I like the R34 best of all.  It is relatively easy to cock and still have good power.  Plus the profile
is most attractive to me.  The one I have looks a lot like the 35.  Plus it looks a lot like the Diana that my Dad brought back from Germany after WWII.  (My brother has it still.)

The HW's may be slightly better made but the Diana is fine for me.

The Diana 34 is a great gun. Mine shots almost as good as my HW97K.
What makes the difference, is probably the trigger.

Here is a man who understands which things are important, LOL!   :o

My unhesitating choice would also be the HW 55--only the finest rifle ever made, by the finest traditional airgun manufacturer still standing. The gun is absolutely the perfect size and weight, a beautifully-balanced design that feels like an extension of your body. The efficient manually-locked breech is a brilliant detail combining all the advantages of both break-barrel and fixed-barrel guns.

The hard part would be deciding which stock...the slim, practical, and tough beech S model; the lovely and adjustable walnut CM match variant; or the outrageously beautiful Tyrolean. But in the end I might also go for the M stock, not only beautiful but the ultimate "all-rounder" of the bunch.

I think a nice German springer with a Tyrolean stock would be a most awesome thing to have, but finding a left handed one is akin to procuring unicorn horns and fairy dust....

Very tough choice for me...

At first, I thought D34.  My .177 D34 w/Vortek kit is mellow enough for all-day plinking but strong enough for pesting.  Accuracy is very good.

The other rifle that creates the dilemma for me is the RX2.  I have the Weihrauch version, the HW90, in .22.  It is a hammer and is very accurate.  The fact that you can adjust the fpe via the gas ram pressure seems to make it the most versatile of the bunch but I have to admit I've never dropped mine down to "just plinking" pressure to see how it would perform.  I don't know how much versatility the adjustability really provides...

And it is tempting to pick "other" and write in the little HW30S, but that truly wonderful rifle doesn't have enough energy for me to be confidently hunting with.

We're blessed to have so many great choices!

Tight groups,
Bob

As much as I like my D34 it wouldn't be my one and only German rifle if I could have only one. Most of my shooting doesn't require that much power and lately I've been shooting my Anschutz 335S a lot. Still, when I look at my collection, I would probably choose my HW55 or one of my HW35s.

Just curious, do you find that setup a bit heavy to lug around on an all day hunting trip or maybe you don't do that?

;D Since mine was the only vote for the RX2 I feel compelled to explain why. The RX2 in 20 cal is dead on accurate from 10 yards out to 60, it has a pretty laminated stock that shoulders well for me. At ~20 fpe very capable for small game and easy to adjust the power if needed to shoot at lower power levels. Fit and finish are exemplary this is definitely a rifle to pass on to another family member when I am no longer around to brag about what a great rifle it is.
