Made a deal with Mike at MRodAir which netted me the AirMax Extreme MKII. It Took about 4 days for UPS to get it from there to here. I wasn't even mad because they pushed delivery back a day.
The compressor arrived double boxed and packed inside with styrofoam to protect the electronics on top of it. Inside were the fill whip, oil breather, water pump and hoses, power cord and a packet of replacement seals. The were also the test plug for the whip and a male foster fitting to convert another male fitting to form a coupling to fill tanks. Reportedly there are enough spares for 2 rebuilds. There was also a note from Mike to call him when I got ready to set thing up.
I set up my location with a table to set the compressor off the floor where I could see it and I filled my 5gal bucket with water. I filled the crankcase with 30wt non-detergent oil (as per Mike) and connected the water lines and pump. The outlet from the pump and inlet to the cylinder water jacket are the same size hose fittings. The return hose is a different size so it's impossible to hook it up wrong.
Then I called Mike just to make sure I did everything right... which I did. I ran the compressor a few short runs just to blow any gunk out that might be there. A few bleeds and it blew dry. The I put the test plug in and I couldn't build pressure. The brass fitting for the bleeder was leaking. A good hour of fiddling finally paid off. I still got a very small leak but I'll get that worked out. Might need a new white seal inside but I'm confident that will be sent to me pronto.
I had bought a power strip to insure I wouldn't run the compressor without having the water pump running. This didn't work out work out. The compressor popped the reset on the strip in short order. I plugged the compressor into the wall and it worked like it should. I'll have to order a higher amp strip.
I set the auto shut off to 3k and connected to my AirMax Varmint. I hit the start button and after about 20 seconds the compressor shut off. Daggonit, I kicked the breaker.... but wait... this lights didn't go off.... WTH? Well lookie there.... that gun is full. THANK YOU AUTO SHUT OFF !!!
By this time Betty Lou is tapping that foot.... I know what that means. Means play time is over... time for TV and bed. Tomorrow is a workday. Awwww Man ? So I put my toys away and shuffled out of the play room.
Tomorrow we fill tanks and take pictures. Tonight I dream about being a self sufficient airgunner. No more pumping and no more 2 hour round trips to fill tanks.
-
Sweet! Looking forward to photos!
-
Yes don't forget to turn on that water pump 😳😎
-
Ken..
Reading what happened to you has really got me "gunshy" on the water pump. And I know I suggested the power strip to you. My experience tonight certainly proved that just any power strip ain't gonna cut it. I know I'm going to need one that will handle 20 amp. before it resets.
Paul..
Getting it set up without doing something stupid was the important thing tonight. I didn't even want to take my mind off of what I was doing for pictures.... they will come. I also want to report on fill times for tanks including the 80 cf and 100 cf. Then I want to report on temps. I doubt very much I will be filling many guns directly. As fast as this fiiled the AMV to 3k I think the logical thing to do is top off tanks and fill guns with the tank.

I woke up this morning thinking (that's a good sign that I didn't wake up dead) what having this access to unlimited air really means. I've had my SynRod .22 for quite sometime now and never really got to put the fine tune to it. I mean, I had plenty of air in the tanks when I got the TSS but since then I've also installed the MDS hammer and have never really been able to top it off. The same goes for the AirMax Varmint. The FD-PCP has spent a lot of time hanging on the rack and the twin 2240 HPA carbines are gonna need sun glasses when they come out of that dark black soft case.
-
I found it very important to take the time to snap at least one picture this morning. I would not have this compressor if it weren't for the GTA and all involved, including you. I won the July monthly raffle for the EdGun Matador and found I couldn't use the BullPup in my current physical condition. So I turned it into this compressor, something I can use. I found it fitting to apply this label to remind me how grateful I am everytime I turn it on.
I'll get better pictures as the thread moves along but, you get the idea.
Thanks again GTA !!
-
Bill....This is all working out Great !
-
It is a good feeling to be self sufficient on air. I know when my Shoebox Max went down I was in a deep depression. :(
-
That is a really nice compressor, seems like I was reading that the high pressure cylinder in that is the ringless one.
-
Not ringless..... o-ringless.... it has REAL rings.

Looks like my portable generator ???
After I pay off my ATN XSight II, I'm planning on picking up an Air Venturi comp......unless this thread sways me
-
It just might...
-
You will definitely get some raw info on this one... I have never owned an HPA compressor of any type before.
-
You're right Bill it's the Airmax MKIV that has the ringless high side.
-
It is also "breathable" air.
-
It is also "breathable" air.
So, it doubles as a respirator! :P
-
Yep, human inflatables.
-
Sitting on the edge of my seat to see how reliable these compressors turn out to be. And... if Mrodair stands behind them this time. One has to wonder how many MK1 compressors were sold and how many are still working, and how many folks got refunds. Do tell. ::)
-
one of these might work out better then a power strip
Tripp Lite Standard Power Extension Cord Y Splitter Cable 10A, 18AWG
it wont let me post a link to amazon but do a serch they make them in alot of diffrent wire gauges
-

I think MRodAir has the optional CPAP kit

That's funny! :D

Congratulations on the pump! Will be great to hear how it performs for you, sounds like it has some speed and power to it!
-
If I can get out of the bi-weekly trip to Troy, Al this evening I plan to see what it will do with a tank or 2.
-
Managed to postpone the trip to Troy until tomorrow and I noticed the SRod sitting there with 1900psi on the gauge. I snagged it up and headed for the compressor. I plugged the water in and bumped the auto shut up a tick from last night's setting at 3000. Hooked the whip to SynBad and hit the switch. 35 seconds later it shut off. The gauge read 3100psi. The temp hit 55.6c.
I'm in HPA Heaven.
-
Bill the really neat thing about tanks here in the U.S. is we might be seeing the option of getting a 15 year extension on tank life for the carbon fiber tanks. The English tanks over there are good for 30 years for being able to get them hydrotested. That's for the SCBA tanks I know for sure.
-
I did read that posted Wayne... sounds good to me. I'll need to pick one up for the road trips. For now my aluminum tanks are great for home use and no shelf life.
-
Next up will be my 80cf aluminum 3300 scuba tank. I think it's down around 2200 psi right now. I'll take it to 3400 and let it cool/settle to right around 3300. I have to rig a connector first. I have a spare K station to couple in.
-
When I get both my tanks filled I'll take along a double male foster fitting for the one and the other adaptor is basically a male foster fill adaptor for the other one, when one is down I'll wrench the fill adapter on the other tank.
-
Anyone have a small chart for Bar to psi conversion?
-
I just google it myself Bill.
-
Yeah, I just wanted to see who was using what.
-
Like to make a nice little donut sticker to go around the gauge.
-
decided not to push it for it's first time out. I bumped it another tick and let it fly. The 80cf was right around 2200. It ran up to 3200 in just under 15 minutes and shut off flawlessly. The temp went to 64.3c. When it shut off I didn't hear the slightest hiss from anywhere. I shut the valve on the tank and bled off the whip. I let the water pump run and it was down to 30c in about 2 minutes. I figure another 5 minutes <> would have got me the 3400. It's not any louder than my 20gal shop compressor. It's also a double piston.
So far, so good.
-
Sure sounds like you got a keeper! I may have to sell some of the inventory and invest in a pump. I'd like to see the new one Mrodair has coming, or is this the one?
-
This is the middle one he offers now. I think he has the 12v and another low end one coming.
-
For now I'll print this off at work and laminate it. It'll make a good reference.
-
Thanks for the chart, looks like that pump is going to be great for you!
-
NP Wes.... yeah, I'm gonna like this. Eventually I'll pick up a smaller 4500 psi carbon fiber tank. Straight filling guns is quick, fast and in a hurry.
-
Sometimes you're the bug and sometimes you're the windshield....
I woke up this morning and went directly into my routine of morning unmentionables. Then pressed "play" on the liquid inspiration machine on my way to my morning news box. I opened my window to the airgun world to see if anyone has beaten me to the draw this morning and then it happened...
Just about the time that little ding donger sounded to let me know my "up in a cup" was ready, I heard it.... that 4 letter word.. RAIN !!! Not just your simple pop up, nope.... a DELUGE for the next 8 days. Then they try to sugar coat it with "temps will be much cooler". No kidding Jim G'nall.... that's because the AC is on and I can't go outside !! Oh wait a minute ..... I just remembered... I have an indoor range. And not your run of the mill indoor range either. Mine is complete with a bar stocked with liquidities ranging from zero to 120 proof. And , not one but, 2 TVs so I can watch Al Roker toss another dart at the weather map.
-
Well, dang! I think I will pack up the air bottle and make that trip! LOL!
-
North 'til ya smell it then West 'til ya step in it. If ya get wet and folks start saying "eh?" then ya went too far North.... back it up.
-
Did I miss it, so many threads out now about compressors. What are you doing about moisture removal? Are you pumping water into your tanks and guns? Does your particular airventuri have automatic bleed at least or are you bleeding every few minutes? HP moisture filter?
-
I don't know that this is an air venture. I didn't get it from PA. This has a built in dryer before the whip and I bleed often. The bleed is located below the whip. It's also located in and air conditioned environment... and I do mean air conditioned... I'm a Northern boy living in the South.. my a/c is set at a constant 68*. During my initial break in (besides the bench running before it was sent to me) I bled several time. I'm not a rich boy by any means.. I can't afford to neglect procedure. I'll fill my 100cf then check the drying media. Admittedly it is new to me and I need to learn it's characteristics.
-
Bill,
The website description is severely lacking in both description detail and pictures....
Based on what I see from your posted pictures, you have a basic, water/oil separator, that's it.
All this will do is drop out some water and oil that you bleed off manually. You really should add a high side filter. Filled with sieve and charcoal activated carbon, the filter will ensure you get clean, dry air. This assumes it's properly maintained.
Enjoy the new compressor ;D
edit for error made....

High side dryer is $400, I just sold one for $300 and had to refund $100 because of shipping damage to the hose. :(
-
Reckon I need to look into options...
-
A high side filter certainly can cost big$$.
On the other hand, I have about $100 in mine and enough media to service it for a long time....
-
John... is that something I can buy? you have a link?
-
Bill,
This thread has all the info you'll need to make your own high side filter.

The activated carbon can be bought just about anywhere that sells aquarium supplies. I got mine from Wal-Mart.
Mrodair also has this. Basically the same thing, minus some extra fittings.

If you buy separate, you'll spend about the same amount of money as the package from Mrodair, but, you'll have MUCH more media to service with.
John
EDIT:
Forgot to mention. One thing this set up lacks is a PMV(pressure maintaining valve) For the high pressure filter to work at it's best it needs....you guessed it, HIGH pressure! You want about 1800psi and up for the filter to work best. When filling bottles or tanks, you probably have the needed pressure already in the tank.
If filling something with less than 1800psi in it, the filter will benefit from having a PMV. I don't have a PMV. I always fill tanks well above 1800psi so I don't need one. When filling a new tank, I use air from my other tanks to get the pressure up in the new tank, then top off with the compressor.
-
Thanks..
Mike is sending the one in your last link. He is including all the fittings and hose. I'll order the sieve and grab some charcoal at the local hardware. I have plenty of PVC on the farm.
Appreciate you guys looking out.
-
Bill,
Good deal, that housing will do nicely. One last thing. when you mount the filter, make sure it's vertical, with the air going into the tank coming off the top of the filter. This way, any water will stay at the bottom of the filter, you also reduce the risk of the air channeling around the media.
-
Yeah, I checked that out when I was reading the linked thread. I had actually read that thread before when I was considering the Chinese compressor. I just never got close enough to a done deal to order it.
I'll admit.. the excitement of getting this one has allowed it to slip my mind.
-
Meantime, I'm gonna pull the "tampon" filter off the end of my hand pump whip, connect it to the compressor whip, run a few short runs and check it.
-
Bill,
My Yong heng compressor came with a tampon type high side filter. After two runs of the compressor, I realized I was putting moist air at best and probably some liquid water into my tanks..... I ended up dumping the air and pulling the tank valves. I didn't get any water out, still, I know the air was NOT dry...and it smelled like oil.
I ceased using the compressor until my High side filter delivered and was ready for service ;)
-
It's quite possible I could be in the same boat... Like I said... I bled several times and didn't get water... the "tampon" high side filter could tell me a different story. I have a 20oz. paintball tank that I can fill a few times to test. 1800 psi.
I reckon I'm on a mission here in about 30 minutes when the quittin time bell rings.
-
Some of these HP tanks don't use a cartridge filter inside the housing. Some just use the molecular sieve alone. JoeB talks about erosion of the housing due to the reaction of this and that or the other. He probably is right, but I think many filters have been in service for a number of years without any pitting, corrosion or weakening of the housing. I just mention this because I did the DIY PVC inner cartridge and am still getting just a bit of moisture in my HP filter housing. I think it's blowing right past the oring and to the outside of the pvc innards. I've been debating removing the PVC cartridge and just pouring the sieve right on in there. Jury's still debating this one.
Just mentioning it if you don't feel like getting around to making one. Yes, my cartridge is spot-on perfectly sized. There is just a minute amount of pressure pushing on the orings on both ends. I've taken the time to sort of face the ends of the PVC even to keep them smooth but let's be real, 4,500 psi ain't gonna be contained by no chitty piece of pvc and some orings. That never was the intention, rather the pvc is to keep the sieve from coming into contact with the aluminum walls but for me, it's not quite doing its job properly. It seems to be working fine for everyone else but I urge others to remove their PVC inserts and triple check that no moisture is getting by.
Don't over-think it, but definitely you've done the right thing getting that one from Mrodair. They're all basically the same unit made in China and re-branded. JoeB's might be a few notches better, but they all serve some purpose. Sure beats using nothing as MANY unsuspecting hobbyists are currently doing across the globe.
-
Well, considering it cost me the price of a GTA raffle ticket.... I think I done good.
And again.... Thank You GTA..
-

You done real good! If i were you I would go with the JoeB high pressure filter if I thought it was needed. I sold mine because I did not think it was needed with my slow shoebox, but my low pressure filter is high dollar.

I didn't see any signs of water... I'm going to go with short run direct gun fills until I get an inline high side dryer in place. Topping off guns happen quick, fast and in a hurry. The auto shut off is a treat and it don't take much more time than filling from a tank. The compressor is located just inside the door from our shooting bench. Once I get the dryer in place I'll bleed my guns off and inspect for any moisture.
Thanks for the help.
-
Thought maybe a couple pictures might be in order while I'm waiting for the inline dryers to arrive. What's more fitting than #3 stadium seat cushion with pouches for storage as a pad to suppress some sound and a Harley scrub bucket with wrap around pouches for the cooling tank?
-
# 1 set-up !
-
The inline dryer setup arrived from MRodAir today along with Plinkster and 3 mags.
I wasn't able to cancel the gold one from Ali Express in time so it looks like I'll have options.
We'll get this thing installed this evening after work and see what we got...
Yeah right... we'll be scoping Betty Lou's Plinkster and sighting it in before I get anywhere near the compressor room.
-
Bill
Just saw this thread and glad you were able to put that bullpup cash to good use. I am still looking at compressors since my super deal Chinese compressor never made it so my money was refunded from ebay. I have a shoebox now that does the job as long as you are in no hurry and devote a full day to filling tanks. I am ready for something faster so I can shoot more and fill less. I am watching how this Airmax compressor you have works out for you in the long term.
Hope it does work out good for you and welcome to world of free HPA right in your own castle.

Ubetcha Mike...
From what I've seen so far this thing is just what the Doc. ordered. I understand some folks had issues with the first go round but I wasn't there. I can only relate to what I have. And if not for the grace of the GTA I wouldn't have this. I've only filled a couple guns and a couple tanks so far because I didn't want to put moisture in either. But this evening it's game on. I'm going to take a little while to master it and then I'll bring all my wit, wisdom and wizardry back to this thread. That should be good for a laugh. Shouldn't take to long to post either.

You could also still get the super-deal lost compressor for cheap. Cheaper than what most others paid including myself @ $377. They're still popping up for like $265 shipped.
-
Yes sir... several options right now. And the prices are dropping like prom dresses.
-
Plumbed in the inline and cable tied it to an upright on the compressor frame. Did a little modding on my water tank. I fixed the return hose so it returns water to the top of the 5gal. bucket. (before it sank about halfway down in the water) Last time I filled a 3300 psi tank the temp rose to 69 ^ c. IIRC...
I started out by filling the Varmint from 1900 to 3000. Even charging the dryer and hose it took less that 20 seconds to fill the gun. Thank the airgun Gods for the auto shut off. THIS THING IS FAST !!! I hit the bleed and virtually no moisture.
I had been using the 80cf tanks to shoot the SRod and AMV and it was probably down to 3000 psi. I set the auto shut of to 3400 and pushed play. Took maybe 9 or 10 minutes and it shut off. Temp went to 49c. Bled the bleeder and got a little spray. The 100cf tank was just under 3000.... we can't have that... we got a compressor. Connected the hose and again, pushed play. Just under 15 minutes and the auto shut of did it's job. The temp rose to 58.7c. SWEET !! the hose adjustment worked. Turned the bleed and got a short, quick mist. I checked the upper tampon that I located above the inline dryer and it was bone dry. SUCCESS !! I'm a self sufficient tank fillin machine.

SWEEEEEET! ;D

Yep I am watching the prices on ebay right now to see just how low they will go down. I was just so hoping that 69 buck compressor was for real but the stars were not aligned for me. I have a shoebox so not in a big rush for the Chinese compressor. The ones that were 268.95 are sold out now but hoping they will restock still at that price.

Bill I think you have a winner with that compressor by the sounds of it so far, I'd love to have one myself but the dive shop is just too close and handy for me right now (I also like shooting the bull with Terry the owner), we'll see in a couple years when my tanks get dated because even used at a hundred bucks a piece they ain't cheap and both of them really look to be in really good shape yet for much more use.
-
Oh SHOOT Mike!! It didn't even dawn on me that was the "super deal" compressor. I forgot all about that. Glad you got your money back. I'd be careful on the $268 one as well. Some guys are getting a shiny new coin for their money. I hope they all get their money back as well. Definitely go through paypal and/or ebay for one of those.
I gotta give credit to Mike at MRodAir for running this compressor through it's paces before shipping it out. It has a scratch here and a ding there that occurred during the boat ride but it functions (so far) flawlessly. We are way into the "break in" stage and I'm going to change the case oil this just to have a look. I'm also going to move my second (smaller) tampon dryer to the whip between the tanks and the guns. I want to be able to check what comes out of the tanks and into the guns.
I do have a question for some of the experienced compressor owners...
I have the "gold" dryer coming because I wasn't able to cancel in time. Would there be any benefit or downside to putting this on the low side of the compressor? Would it restrict airflow into it?
-
Oh, almost forgot... I have a white board (dry erase) that I'm going to hang above the unit to keep track of fill times, temps and oil/filter changes.
-
I could be wrong but with the SPEED of these compressors, I think adding the gold filter will impede airflow. Sure, my Hill Pump Mk4 comes with one, but you see how slow pumping by hand goes. My small compressor is waaaaaaay faster and I wouldn't put anything on the intake side. You could always try though.
I didn't even think of using the small pre-filter on the fill whip when filling the gun. It may or may not help as you ought to already have dry air going into the scba or scuba tank, but such is not always the case. The other thing is you'll use more from your scba/scuba each time you fill due to the volume of the filter. I use that pre-filter before my gold filter to catch the oil and water blow-by so my gold filter doesn't have as much to filter out.
-
This is why I asked Bizill.... Thank you.
I will not put anything on the low side but I think I will use the smaller one on the whip for filling guns. Just an added precaution. As far as using more air to bleed? Yeah,,, I have a compressor and air is free.... lol
-

Exactly! That's why you've got me thinking perhaps I'll be doing the same.

Hi Avator,
I found this one, available in Belgium in 2 days ; costs about $ 1000 .I don't know the brand , but it looks like yours , no ;)

I don't see the Auto shut off style gauge. That is a HUGE upgrade. Sorry about the pictures. I'm a better shot with a gun.... I promise.

That looks like more a camera issue than operator issue... motion blur is generally worse, that just looks grainy to me.
Maybe you have it on a low resolution setting? once you shrink down an already low res image to less than 350kb it don't look better....

Bill
I have been watching the reports of the ebay sellers and the coin trick they are playing. I have had good results with the few disputes I have had to start on ebay for poor seller performance and always received my money back. Really wanted the compressor though, the ones I am watching now all have ratings in the thousands with 99% plus rating so feel pretty comfortable buying from them. I believe the ones sending the coins are very low rated sellers and likely will be banned for their actions hopefully.
I would not attach any thing to the inlet air side of the compressor since it would restrict the air flow for the compressor to use and likely create more heat and wear on the compressor. It would be ok to use the small black filter between the tanks and guns but as "bizill" has stated you should already have clean dry air in the tanks now going into the guns so no real need. It would be best on the inlet side to the Mrodair HPA filter or the gold filter to catch oil and water that does migrate out of the compressor and lessen the load on the big filters again as "bizill" has stated. One thing I would do with your setup is to not open the tanks valve until the HPA filter has at least 2000 psi built up so the filter can absorb the moisture properly. They work much better at high pressure than at low pressures. Or get a pressure control valve that would go before the HPA filter that will not allow flow into the HPA filter until 1800/2000 psi has been reached in the line to the filter. Just my 2 cents.

HI Mike,
What brand of compressor did you see on Ebay?

HI Mike,

Michel
I have been looking at the Yong Heng compressors on ebay, the one that I ordered for 69 bucks that never showed was a Yong Heng as well. It seems more buyers have gotten that brand/style than the Tuxing style so that has swayed my choice and the few that got the Tuxing have had some issues versus the Yong Heng. Here are some links for sellers with high sales and good ratings.

Got a text message from DHL that my Ali Express gold inline dryer will arrive on the 14th. I ordered it on the 5th and tried to cancel it on the 9th. The website had in listed as still processing. I got a message from he seller that it had already been sent to the "warehouse?" and couldn't be cancelled. It's all good, I believe I have a use for it. If not, it has been spoken for. ;)
-
Hey brother Bill,
How is the dryer you got from me doing ?
Looking for some feed back on these.
Ease of use ? Effective ? Enough parts/fittings included ?
I want to make sure these are the right thing to use, easy to setup and priced right.
Its not easy to compete with the Chinese with their own products ya know.
From the samples we've been sent and others I've personally ordered, this one stood out as best built for the bucks.
What is your opinion as a customer bro ?
-
To be honest I haven't had much run time on the compressor. I only have the 2 tanks and the weather has limited shooting.... either screaming hot or raining. I was able to top both tanks off and every thing seems good. I need to gather a few more connectors to set things how I want them. I'll be scanning the web for various foster fittings. I definitely need a male threaded female foster or two. And I want a male to male foster. The inline I got from you seems to be doing what it's suppose to. I have a white board to hang near the compressor to keep track of things on. My plan is to do a setup where my 80cf tank remains connected to the compressor. I'll branch it off to fill guns from the tank. When the tank drops below 3k I'll be able to top it back off without swapping whips around. I'd also like to pick up a carbon fiber tank for road trips.
These things take time.

Mike,
I don't want to derail Bill's thread, but, think you could provide more info and maybe a video of the new 12v compressor in its own thread? Precious little info on these units...
-
I can just see some moron draining their battery down while they are stuck in the middle of nowhwere. I still think it'll be a nice niche product for the right person. I'd like to know more about them as well.
-
Think I'll contact Joe at AirTanksForSale and see if he can put my dual valve idea together for me. That way there would be no question on safety.
-
This new 12 volt portable job, is pretty cool.
It won't drain your battery.
Built in low voltage detector, cuts it off well before then.
These are much different than the 12 volt units I've seen others post about.
From the others I've seen, this one would be a gen VI or gen VII version.
The best part is, SPA makes these and that's a big bingo for me.
Wired in LED display and "smarty pants" features built into this one.
I will do a video soon, but man the machine work is piling up around here and I'm working thru the weekend trying to get all that done, so it will be a week before I can get one shot and edited.
I'm more worried about keeping enough in stock after the reliability is reported on.
This unit, takes no tinkering, no extras, nothing.
Pull it out of the box and even the hos has fosters on both ends and a small dryer installed.
Truly a plug and play deal.
At the price I have currently, even the Chinese will have a hard time selling them and ship them to you cheaper.
This first order, is to get a few out there and let them sell themselves..
I'm pretty confident after using this one the last 6 weeks myself.
-
Joe B is a great guy! I bought a valve and hose assembly from him to set up a pristine condition SCBA tank I had. He was awesome to deal with. He only sells USA made quality connectors and hoses that are made from the correct materials. I have a hydraulic supply house a few miles down the road where I can get most of the same parts, but the price difference is negligible, and I would prefer to support Joe's business.
-
Thanks MikeH. I'm definitely going to contact him. He is the only one that pops up on my radar for this.
-
Good thing the 12 volt unit has a fail-safe, dummy lockout mode. LOL. Obviously with the amp draw this will have to be used with the vehicle running, actually, perhaps not if you're only filling a small airgun cylinder. I was thinking of filling a smallish tank whilst out in the field. Perhaps it's not targeted for that duty. Either way, I wouldn't run it without the vehicle running. Most have no clue the condition their vehicle battery is in until it dies on them when they're already late for work. You wouldn't want anything extra with a high amp draw leaving you stranded.

Heck Mike pretty much everything that I've bought from you doesn't need any tinkering or modding, yet the option is always there if I choose :D
I almost think that is one of the goals for SPA is to release products that are top notch to begin with, I did adjust the Reg and hammer spring on my PP700SA to suite my needs though 8)

Got a few more pictures to share....
My inline air drying setup. Dry air into tanks and guns from the compressor and dry air out of tanks to guns. Still going to contact Joe B. for more toys, but we're up and running well.

Paul;
I suspect the prices of the Yong Heng types to continue dropping and from most people's accounts they are proving out pretty good. I've even seen where some have been able to get repair parts. For the price of a decent air gun you could buy one now. Add the inline dryer and use a 5 gal bucket for cooling water and you would be up and running. That's where I would be if not for some good fortune. It's definitely a step to the next level. The auto shut off is a great feature but I never leave mine unattended anyway so it's not a deal breaker.
-
If I can ever stop buying guns I will probably get something like what the newest one Mike has to offer at Mrodair. That was the ringless one that I was referring to earlier on in this thread I think. It's the one with the ringless high side cylinder.

I'm with you Wayne, they need to stop coming out with new, innovative air guns, so I can direct funds toward other things!

I think it would be safe to say that nothing but dry air is getting into my tanks and guns....
-
Looks good Bill!
Is the mrodair filter really that much smaller than the gold filter or just a camera illusion?
-
The Mrodair filter is the black one to the left of the gold one. It also came with the smaller silver one on the tank valve.
Yes... the gold one is that much bigger.
-
I was also told that the black filter system includes the stuff that makes it breathable air.... I don't intend on breathing it.
-
Thanks. I thought, the mrodair black filter was the same size as the gold one...not even close now that I see them together.
I also use the gold filter. It's packed with sieve and activated carbon in place of the large "tampons".
The stuff that makes breathable air is sieve and activate carbon. Even though I use both, the closest I'll come to breathing it is air bleeds...
-
Yeah... the black one has the sieve in it. That's why I feel good about just the tampon stuff in the gold one. The small silver one has another tampon. Not sure what's in the factory one on the compressor bleed block. I haven't opened that one yet. I also have the small blue one from the hand pump on the whip I use to fill guns from the tanks. I'm thinking there is no water getting in no guns.
-
You bring a whole new meaning to the word Overkill, seriously if I had all those filters I would be using them as well. I do believe you will trap any and all moisture or any other chemical that want to try to slip past one of those filters.
No water in guns or tanks is a real good thing. 8)
Mike
-
Thanks Mike.... That was my thought. I could get away with much less.
-
First time using the compressor this morning since the new drying system has been installed. I had shot my 80cf alum. 3300psi scuba tank down to about 2600psi.
I connected the tank, hit the water pump and pressed 'play" on the compressor. After the drying system was pressurized I eased the valve open on the tank slowly to let the pressure level out across the system and the cranked it open. In just under 20 minutes the compressor auto shut off and the tank was at 3400psi. The temps gauge topped at 54.2 c. I closed the valve on the tank and opened the bleeder on the compressor. I got a short mist of pure water spray and then the system depressurized. Life is good.
-
Sounds like you have it all worked out and doing good. That's pretty fast for filling 1000 psi in a 80CF tank.
I am still watching those Chinese compressors to see if the prices drop more. Got the shoebox no in no hurry but just want a faster fill times so I don't have to use up the better part of a day when I have to fill my tanks.
Mike
-
By the sounds of it you've got that baby pretty much dial'd in, fantastic I'd say!!
-
Thanks guys, yeah, I'm happy.
I just changed the crank oil too... just for ha has. First time since new. It was a little darker than it was when I put it in but, it didn't smell bad and it was pure oil.
Mike told me to use non-detergent 30wt so that's what I use. When the vendor recommends what to use in their product, I tend to listen.
-

I too would recommend what Mike says, I think I remember saying on his website that he's ran them through some good testing.
-
Yep, said he filled a couple guns and topped off 2 tanks. Then he drained the fluid and shipped it.
While we're on the subject... in all fairness to Mike...
I had a mag that didn't work right and Mike included 2 extras with my Plinkster to cover it. He brain farted and grabbed 2 .22 instead of .177. I e-mailed him and he said he would send the right ones right out. I checked that mail today and got a package from Mike... 3 .177 mags. The guy does give it his best... I think some people are right when they say his plate is pretty full. I remember operating my one man PC repair shop... manning the phone, answering questions, placing orders, the front counter, picking up supplies, keeping books and doing repairs/new builds got quite overwhelming at times. Business being what small business is, it's difficult to take on an employee. You either give your customers competitive pricing or you pay an employee.
-
one of these might work out better then a power strip
Tripp Lite Standard Power Extension Cord Y Splitter Cable 10A, 18AWG
it wont let me post a link to amazon but do a serch they make them in alot of diffrent wire gauges
I think he said he needed a 20A circuit for the compressor. 10A cable is gonna get hot in short order...
-
I wouldn't use anything less than a 15A rated cord/splitter for my yong heng. I know, it draws about 11-12A running. A 10A cord just wouldn't cut it. I suspect, the Airmax draws a bit more Amps running than my yong heng.
If the Airmax truly needs a 20A circuit, does it have a 20A plug like this? it should....
https://www.amazon.com/Leviton-5366-C-Industrial-Grounding-Black-White/dp/B00002NAU9/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1503686308&sr=8-5&keywords=20+amp+plug (https://www.amazon.com/Leviton-5366-C-Industrial-Grounding-Black-White/dp/B00002NAU9/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1503686308&sr=8-5&keywords=20+amp+plug)
Good thing is you don't generally need a 20A plug to use a 20A cord, they tend to have receptacle ends that will accept either a 15A or 20A plug. Best to double check before you buy one though. You will still need a 20A wall receptacle to plug the 20A rated cord into though...
-
Yep... 20amp.
I had my pump and compressor on a 15 amp strip so I couldn't mess up and run the compressor without turning on the pump.... no good.... had to eliminate the 15 amp strip. It will fill until it reaches a certain pressure and begins pulling the load. Some of ya'll may struggle more than me even... I only have 3300 psi tanks. I never fill anything to 4500 psi.
-
The slow filling after 4000 psi from the Yong Heng compressors is probably why they don't recommend filling the big tanks from this compressor since the bigger the volume of tank the longer it will take to pressurize to 4500 psi as compared to a small 90ci or 500cc tanks. Less volume less run time to the same pressures.
I will find out how mine does since I have a 66cf SCBA and a 90ci buddy bottle that I fill to 4500 plus an 80 cf aluminum scuba tank to 3500, two 30cf scba aluminum tanks to 2500 psi. Mine will get a workout at least 2 to 3 times a month more in the winter since I shoot more in cooler temps.
Mike
-
I probably should say that my compressor undoubtedly draws more than the YH compressors.
-
I think I read in the other gate it was around 8 amps for the Yong Heng.

Just completed my (chill-water cooled) HPA charging Station build

That is awesome !!! I want one for my MKII !!

Thanks for that. I made a copy as well. I am tired of running in the house from the shop to look it up on the computer. Smile. Brian
For now I'll print this off at work and laminate it. It'll make a good reference.

DeZ began a thread asking about the AV compressor and how it's holding up to normal usage thus far. Like I posted to his thread. I have the MKII Airmax Extreme. Some say it's the same as the AV and some say it ain't. Again, I really don't care either way... I'm filling tanks and guns and enjoying the heck out of it. I think the key is to use a product as it's intended to be used. If it don't do the job, buy something that will. So far, my MKII is above and beyond the call of duty.
-
Ok, here we are, 4 months since the last post on this thread. I thought it might be time for an update....
Since the last post I have filled tanks with the compressor upwards of 15 -20 times. It's worked flawlessly.
Been shooting my PCP guns quite often as of late. Today both tanks need filled. I noticed my temp gauge was not working so I ran to our local discount outlet and picked up new LR44 batteries for it..... problem solved.
I began with the 100cf aluminum 3300 psi SCUBA tank. It was down to 2500 psi. I turned on the water pump in the 5gal water bucket and made sure it was circulating properly..... check. Ambient temp was 19.5c. I connected the hose to the tank and set the auto shut off at 3400psi. Fired up the compressor and slowly opened the tank valve to equalize the pressure across the system. When equalized I opened the valve on up and settled in to watch the "paint dry".
Just under 19 minutes the compressor shut off. The gauge on the tank yoke and the gauge on the compressor matched at 3400 psi. The digital temp gauge read 59.6c.
I closed the valve on the tank, moved the compressor switch "off" and bled the air lines. A reasonable amount of moisture came out and I turned the compressor back on to purge any remaining moisture.
I left the water pump on to completely cool the compressor back down to ambient room temps. Once cooled I'll hook up and fill the 80cf 3300 psi aluminum Scuba tank as well. It is also to around 2500 psi.
I very happy with this compressor and the independence it affords me.
-
I let the water cool down to around 39c on the temp gauge. I scooped enough water out of the bucket to drop in a 1 gal jug of water I had frozen in the freezer.
Connected the lines to the 80cf tank and fired it back up at 1:12pm. At 1:29 the compressor hit the preset 3400psi and shut down. The temp gauge read 67.4c I bled it off and let the water pump run to cool everything back down to around 39c and opened up my covered 5 gal. bucket to find luke warm water and a half frozen ice jug.
Again.... I'm a happy guy.
-
Just bumping back to the top...
I have a 30 minute 4500 psi SCBA tank and a fill setup on their way to me. They both should be here by the middle of next week. I've been filling my 100cf and 80cf aluminum SCUBA tanks fairly regularly to 3400 psi without issue. This will be the first time the compressor with be pushed to the 4500 psi limit. Very much looking forward to the portability of the lighter tank.
I'll report soon.
-
It will be a true test of your gauge accuracy on your compressor and tank, and will also let you know how well the burst disks work! I use my YH to fill my 90ci CF tank, and I think both gauges read low because my burst disks give out at 4400 psi. I just fill mine to 4300 now so I'm not replacing a burst disk each time I top it off!
-
Yep you are going to see just how well it pumps to 4500, hopefully better than the YH go past 4000 psi. My YH really starts to work hard filling my 66CF scba tank past 4000 psi but it does it read temps over 65C with a gallon jug of ice in the 5 gallon bucket also.
I have blown the burst disc twice in mine filling to 4500 so either both my gauges are wrong or the discs are week. I am leaning toward the discs since my gauges match each other within 100 psi. That's two liquid filled JB gauges and three scba tank gauges. I used up the extra discs that come with the YH so I make my own out of .005" KS brass sheet from hobby lobby and use a paper hole punch to cut perfect sized discs that drop right in place of the original ones. It has not blown yet at 4500 psi. The YH discs measure .005" as well but appear to be copper versus brass.

Thanks for the idea, Mike!
My Vevor compressor burst discs would blow at about 2500psi, so I doubled them up, and now they would blow near 4000psi.

Update:
Found an SCBA fill assy. on the classifieds from another member and bought it. Then I found an MSA H-30 30 minute 4500psi Carbon Fiber tank and bought that.
Took half day off today to take Betty Lou to a doctor appt. Got home around 2 and headed for the compressor room. Before we left for the doctor I put my 1 gal. frozen water jug in the 5 gal. water bucket.
The tank came shipped empty. I turned on the pump to cycle the water and the temp gauge fell to 12.6c.
I use a male to male connector between the SCBA fill hose and the compressor hose.
I fired up the compressor at 2:46. At 3:12 it was at 3k and the temp read 55c. I shut it down to bleed the water and let things rest for ten minutes. Pressure stayed right on 3k.... no leaks.
I fired it back up and just as it hit 4500 psi and the auto shutoff was about to trigger that male to male connector let go.
The hose end with the fitting hit me on top of my big toe and scared the dog doo outta me. By the time I got things caught and shut down I had lost all my air pressure.
Good news is:
Everything (except a $2 nipple) worked as it is supposed to.
Tank held at 4500 with no leaks.
Compressor pumped to 4500 with one 10 minute break and a line bleed.
Temp topped out at 61c.
So, before I give it another go I'm going to place an order for all new connectors and make sure they are all rated high enough to handle the 4500 psi.
-
Oh yeah...
Total compressor run time from 0 to 4500 was 40 minutes.
-
BTW...
Safety glasses and ear plugs were in full effect. I forgot the steel toes and that hurt like a SOB !!

You shouldn't be wearing Betty Lou's opened-toes high heels, Bill! ;D
LOL! There's a mental image I DIDN'T NEED! :o

Hey Bill, if it makes you feel any better...I had pretty much the same experience as you did when the Chinese quick connect couplers let go around 4100-4200 PSI. It actually happened to me 3 times, where each time I used new male/female fittings. On one of these instances I got hosewhipped in the hand and arm, leaving huge bruises on them both. The other two times I got marginally wiser and zip tied the hoses to chairs/random objects in the garage so it wouldn't fly around as bad. This was all over the course of a weekend, and after that weekend I swore off using these generic Chinese quick connects. I could go on with a few different reasons why I think those Chinese fittings are a real hit/miss, but won't bore you with that unless you want.
On my compressor, I wanted to use stainless steel Foster quick connects since those are rated for high pressure use. The Foster fittings only come in NPT, so I bought M10 thread to 1/8 NPT adapters, and then used "American" fittings on a Chinese compressor. I also have a check valve (one way valve) in the whole setup to prevent the SCBA tank from dumping all of its air when there's a compressor failure (including hoses and fittings).
Like I said, these Chinese high pressure fittings are real hit or miss. A lot of people say their fittings work fine up to 4500, but I didn't have any luck after a few different tries at it. All the fittings I'm using are pretty expensive compared to the Chinese stuff, and I've ended up spending more on parts/accessories than the cost of the compressor. I realize not everyone can/wants to spend that much on fittings, but let me know if you're interested in converting over to NPT threaded high pressure fittings and I can send you over some links and more detail.

Thanks Andy.. send the links.
We have a Fastenal in the area and I was going to check them too.
Pretty sure Joe B. has all I need.

A coworker is a volunteer fireman at a couple towns over. He brought me a 60 minute 3k MSA SCBA CF tank and the harness with regulator. I don't need the reg but, it's there. They only filled the tank to 2216 all of it's life and it was hydro'd two years ago. It's one year out of it's 15 year shelf life. I'm going to use it at 3k to fill my 2k guns.
I changed the fillings on the fill hoses, all of them to be safe. I checked the oil and fired up the compressor with the bleed open just to be sure that last week's mishap didn't leave anything full of oil and moisture. I dropped the one gallon ice jug in the 5 gallon water bucket 30 minutes prior to bring the ambient water temp down.
I then connected the 60 minute tank and filled to 1500 psi. The temp went to 46c. I shut it down and bled the lines. Minimal moisture came out of the bleeder. I want to let the tank sit awhile and see if it maintains pressure and let the compressor rest. It took about 25 minutes to go from 0 to 1500 psi on this 60 minute tank.
-
And BTW.... I called our local Fastenal... they don't handle HPA foster fittings. 150 psi max.
Joe B. is a bit pricey but, what value do you put on your safety?
-
Is there a local distributor supply house or industrial hardware business near you, we have a distributor supply house here in Oxford that carries HPA fittings and quick connect fosters that I get my fittings from when needed. They are not real cheap but not as high as Joe Bs prices.

I'll have to do a little more searching Rob. I'm about 40 miles south of Montgomery. I'm sure they have something there.
-
I am sure you should be able to find one in the Montgomery area. Also check with heavy equipment shop since they use high pressure hydraulic lines and hoses and most have in house capabilities to make up hoses and lines on site.

Good idea Rob. Just happen to have a heavy equipment repair shop within a 1/4 mile of our house. Never even thought about checking them.
Thanks.
-
There is always Mcmaster Carr as well if you don't find them locally.
Mike

Thanks again. I just ran down the road. They are closed on Saturday. Whoda thunk it?
-
Welp... looks like I'll be doing a tear down... at least a partial take down and clean up. I think the sudden blow out of air when the nipple let go soaked all my air filters with oil and water. It don't want to push up much past 2500 and the temps don't rise past 40c. I don't think it's anything serious. It don't sound funny like there is any internal damage.
I got a three day weekend coming next week. I may find time to get into it. In the meantime, I got plenty of C02.
-
On a good note.. I went out and mowed both mine and Killer's yards to blow off some steam. And Betty Lou is in the kitchen.
-
Not Sure how they measure up to JB, but Nuvair seems to have HPA fittings as well if you cant get what you need local.
Steve.

Thanks Steven.

Hey y'all... been a while for this one.
I went out to the shop on this chilly morning to fire up the stove and warm things up a bit.
I noticed the big lump of red machinery sitting in the corner of the workbench that was Big Red.
It's all plumbed and plugged in so I figured, what the heck... give it a go. I popped a test gauge on the end of the whip and pressed "Play". The needle went to 3k and Big Red shut off. (right where the autostop was set)
I let it sit still pressurized and watched the gauge for several seconds and it didn't drop.. at all.
I bleed it off and ran 3 more cycles with the same results.
Well what do you know... Ole Big Red still has some life in her. ;D Only problem is that the temp gauge has dead batteries in it.

That sounds like an easy fix to me! Is this the Compressor you won several years ago? If so, I'd say it's probably the best Airgun investment you've probably ever made! :P ;D

Well kinda... I won a gun in the GTA raffle and traded for this compressor.

Yeah, 7 years since the first post in this thread.. I'd say it's paid off.
Granted it sat for a couple years all tolled in the 2 reseals I've done on it...
Matter of fact, I think you and Don were here on it's second failure.
-
I connected it to the Beeman 1358 that was down to around 18 or 19 k and topped it off to 3k in a couple minutes.. not as fast as it used to be but she still runs. Probably good for topping off 3k tether tanks.
I'll probably put it to use filling the QB78 bottle project I'll be doing.

Even with the down time, it has served you well! I don't recall it failing that day, but then again, the influence of Alabama Creek Water may have fuzzed my memory! ;D

Yeah... I think it started making some noise so we stopped using it but I remember later finding a wrench that was under it vibrating and making the noise. Heck, pretty sure I was under the influence as well.
Speaking of such things... we just finished stocking up this morning. ;)

Speaking of such... here is an incriminating picture. :o
