Hey All,
I really like the AMX reticles that Hawke uses, but my 2-7x32 Airmax makes my Prod top-heavy, so I know the 4-12x40 isn't gonna work. I prefer half-mildot markings, but I can live with a regular mildot scope if the dots are not too big like in some cheaper scopes. I would prefer 4-12x mag, but I can live with a smaller tube than 40mm, if need be..
Any suggestions?
What are you using on your Prods?
:-) Chickie

I've got the UTG 3-12x44 compact with the etched glass reticle. I like it, but it's a good 8 ounces heavier than your Airmax, so probably won't be something you're interested in.
Scopes can be such a personal thing. If you're looking to save weight, maybe a Vantage 4 x 32 AO would be worth a look. It comes with a Mil Dot reticle, although it's a little thicker than some.
Anyway, best of luck with the search.

Burris Timberline 4.5-14x32 (http://www.burrisoptics.com/scopes/timberline-riflescopes-series/timberline-riflescope-4.5-14x32mm). Excellent scope. Long eye relief, clear glass. Being only a 32mm objective, it is not as bright as something similar with 40, but since the glass is clearer than UTG and this level of Hawke, it ends up looking just as good.
I have one on my HW30s to keep weight down without losing magnification.
Now that you mention it, I may move it over to my P-Rod, since its shoulder stock is a bit long to let me get my eye as close as I need with the Cheapers 6X Bugbuster that I like so well. (other than its short eye relief and fat reticle) It would be PERFECT, and I shoot the P-Rod a lot more than the HW30s anyway.

Twice the magnification, about 2 ounces lighter. But about $100 more. Maybe still too heavy or too much money?

Scopes can be such a personal thing.
Agree. :)
On stockish prods, don't like heavy or bulky scopes. Others don't mind it and prefer to have the higher magnifications. If you plan to add a double tube, or make it a long tube (rifle), then that will handle them much better. That tippyness, to some part, comes from the small thin forestock. I like 32mm obj on prods, but as others have mentioned, some of them are fairly heavy. My stockish prods are used very seldom, beyond 50yds, so mil-dots not a requirement (for me). Also, none of mine still have the oem forestock.
PS: I use a couple of the simmons 44 mags on synrods to keep the weight down. I'm fairly happy with them, but they are a couple of ounces heavier that their spec.

+1 for this awesome nice UTG scope! Had this scope on a MM tuned 25 caliber underlever springer, had it on my 25 caliber synrod and now on my 22 caliber prod.
The feature I like and use the most on it is the side adjust parallax which will adjust down to 10 yards. It is crystal clear with a large field of view, aside from the weight it brings a lot of quality for the money invested, I would buy another in a heartbeat when I need another scope.
On a prod with the shoulder stock, this compact scope is quite balanced, and you aren't reminded of it's weight because of the balance.

At 14oz & 8", I've been using the CQB Bugbuster. It's got a little longer eye relief than other Bugbusters. The only detractor about it is the wire reticle.

Thanks, guys!
I am researching my way through your suggestions, slowly but surely..
I need some of the scopes to focus close, I found several that go down to 5 yards that look okay, but I haven't ever used the brand before, I don't think..
Please keep the ideas coming, thanks!!

@ 5 yards you use a club! :D
10 yards is my minimum, and that is for the indoor range for tuning. I have had scopes that say they will focus to that, and haven't. Sometimes it is just an issue at the higher powers. Good luck with your search and post back with a review of whatever you decided to choose.

The bugbuster goes down to 3 yards. I was using the prod to kill red wasps in the lawn this past weekend at about 5 yards.

I keep the side adjust all the way back on the SCP3-UGM312AOIEW that I posted a pic of, I popped a nutter in the head at about 9' and it was perfectly in focus to deliver a headache via airmail.. Don't know how much closer you'd want than this one goes!

Steve,
I found a bargain, and I am impressed with the features, so I figured I would give this one a try. If it is too heavy for the little Crosman guns, it will likely end up on something else before too long, ha!

Jeremy,
I like this scope, and I may end up trying one down the road as I upgrade to better glass after completing my builds. I prefer Hawke AMX, Half-Mildot, or Mildot reticles, so I am a little unsure of the ballistic plex reticle on the Burris.
Thanks for the suggestion.

39m,
I liked the Burris, it is pricier than the scopes I ordered, but certainly not too pricey once I am done tinkering with these particular builds.
I also like the Simmons, but it doesn't focus well at close range, or so I have been told. For a longer range application than these guns, I would think this would be a nice scope, for sure. Thanks for the suggestion, I will likely try one of these before too long, too!

UTG bugbuster. It weighs 13 ounces. 3-9 with adjustable objective and diopter.
Phil,
I am a bit worried about the reticle and dot thickness, but I ordered on anyway, lol. For largish pests at close range the reticle should be fine, especially in low light. Thanks for the input!

Thanks, I will review them as time permits, lol.
I bought 3 UTG scopes and the Millet SP-1 red-dot, and a few other items, lol, so no telling when I have all my purchases sorted out and set-up properly.
I have set myself up with a task that will keep me occupied the rest of the year, and goodness only knows how much time I will spend in the shop next winter machining parts, oh my! It's been too long since I've watched metal chips fly, though, so it will be fun when the time comes!

A neighbor kid is allergic to bee/wasp stings, and we have HUGE bumblebees here, lots of them. Needless to say, my posse has taken to providing 'air support' for the child, ha ha!
The MSPs in my collection get a LOT of insect control work done at my place, lol..

Thanks so much for the help, guys!!
I ordered a Millet SP-1 red dot and B-square rings..
I also ordered UTG 3-12X44 30mm Compact Scope, AO, Mildot, scope. Comes with rings...
And a UTG 3-9X32 1" BugBuster Scope, AO, RGB Mil-dot, with QD rings..
AND, a UTG 4X32 1" Hunter Scope, AO, Mil-dot, w/rings...
And a few more goodies!!
I tried to keep the spending low on this batch of scopes, and I am sure better scopes will replace them eventually, but they all seem to be a good value, so here we go!

Close Quarters Combat- what they named it to separate it from the original.
Longer eye relief than the original
No battery bay above the eyepiece/less clutter, with illumination moved to a turret.

The picture of it is identical to the picture of the CQB Bugbuster shown at PA, and the same items come with it, I thought they were the same thing. When I copied and pasted the scope name off of PA and pasted it into the Amazon search box, the only scope that came up was the one I ordered..
If it is not the same, I'll get one of the CQB ones from PA, or Optics Planet, with my next order, and compare their performance and features side by side, so, no worries, either way.

Hmm, I'd have to see if Leupold will re-parallax it in the custom shop, and for how much, but I do like Leupies! I've done a few cheapie scope re-parallax jobs, lol, but no, Ima leave this to the pros!
There will certainly be a 3-9x33 EFR on at least one of these by the time I am done with them, and I am hoping to have a mil-dot reticle installed on at least one, too. I do love great glass, to me the optics are as important as the pellet launcher, so once a gun is 'done', the only way for me to make shooting it any better is to get amazing optics for it. On my personal weapons, I budget as much for glass as for the gun. On 'loaners', guns being tuned, and guns for young ones to use, I play it safe with less expensive scopes..
Thanks for the suggestion!

You sure you don't need to adopt a brother? I'm handy with tools and can mow a lawn and clean windows like a champ.
On a serious note, I have a couple of those cheapie scopes. I don't expect miracles for $30. I do have a CV Life scope with mildots- not good for longer ranges as the dots are kind of big, but it is lightweight, has great clarity, a decent FoV, and did I mention cheap? For shorter-range pesting (40 yards and under) it has been great. For cutting holes in paper, the mildots are too big unless you have a shotgun :D
and 39M- I've peeked at those a few times. Can't seem to finish clicking the "buy" button when I got other things to waste spend money on.

Heya Chickie, check the model/UPC code on your $101 scope from Amazon, there is one model that looks JUST like this one, except it does not have the etched glass reticle, UG in the model number means glass if it doesn't have UG it's a wire reticle and not etched glass.. When I looked on Amazon, the right one with etched glass was $147..

I have leapers scopes with wire and etched glass reticles. The EG is great for better precision shooting at distance. The wire tends to be a little on the "fat" side, but with your close range shooting might be an advantage.

Received my UTG BugBuster yesterday, and so far, disappointed. Feels heavier than I thought it would. Mil-dots are way too small and are difficult to differentiate. Looking through the scope, is like looking through some of my cheapo, no-name scopes. Can't use front lens cap if you install the sun shade. I'll use it this weekend and decide whether to return it or not. I suppose maybe I'm been a bit spoiled after using my new Hawke scope for the past several weeks.

Received my UTG BugBuster yesterday, and so far, disappointed. Feels heavier than I thought it would. Mil-dots are way too small and are difficult to differentiate. Yeah going from a hawke to a UTG bugbuster is going to be way different. As far as the reticle is concerned you can adjust dioper. take off the rear lens cap and focus the crosshairs in. makes it a little better. I guess I didn't have too high of expaections with the bugbuster. It fits my needs fine.

Yep, I wear glasses, so I always have to mess with the dioper. Got it as focused and sharp as it can get. Way too many mil-dots, way too close together, way too small. I'll see how it goes this weekend when I'll be using it more extensively.

It only took 5 shots to sight it in at 20yds. I like to plink my PRod as well on my home range, which can stretch out to about 60yds, so I use the mil-dots frequently.

Well, I must have been tired from work or something the other evening, because I'm liking the Bugbuster much more now. I was able to put through about 8 magazines yesterday evening, and what I've criticized about, yesterday afternoon, appeared to not be so significant as they were 2 days ago. My biggest complaint, then, was the hard to see mil-dots, but yesterday evening, I was able to distinguish the mil-dots just fine. Perhaps, it was because it was brighter outside yesterday, than the evening before. Anyways, I'm no longer considering returning the Bugbuster. I enjoyed shooting it on the PRod yesterday, and the 9X power had no issue finding the 3" steel target set over 50yds away.

I was just out back shooting my home made 1 inch spinners at 40 yards with mine and practicing some 30 yard off hand shooting on my field targets. I like the bugbuster. Especially on days when I'm dead on.

You might have a look through either one of these:

Dvor is free to join and when they have sales on stuff, especially Hawke, you can save a bundle. Waiting for the next sale on them myself to pick up a couple more Airmax scopes to go along with the 3 I already have.

Thank you, I just now joined. I love the AMX reticle, I guess I just have to accept the weight to get what I want..

Me, too. It does close up stuff like no other, I like my new one, so far.. :-)

I tried all three scopes on my Prod, the 3-9 Bugbuster, the 3-12x44 UTG, and the UTG 4x32 A0.
The Bugbuster is very usable for my needs. I enjoy using it at close range on tiny targets, just as it was designed. So far, so good.
I think Lizzie just got the same UTG 4-32 AO as I did. I like mine a lot, in fact, it is on my Prod now, the best of the three for the job, imo..
The 3-12x44 UTG would not focus at any range, and the glass was very swimmy, I am sending it back. I may try another someday with the etched glass reticle, but for now, I would rather not.
Oh, and I am returning my Prod, also. It won't group with anything, with or without LDC. I trouble shot it all day with some experienced help, and it appears I got one of the lemons. Off it goes! Lol..
Thanks so much for your help, fellas, I appreciate it!!
