Title: New P-rod shroud adapter from DonnyFL
Post by: Bizill on May 24, 2017, 01:38:56 AM
The shroud adapter I was using was made from a guy at my work I had to bribe to make for me.  It served its purpose but it was sort of crudely machined even though it was by cnc.  Think he used a dull cutter or something.  Anyway, DonnyFL got me an early adapter he had in the works for the P-rod and it arrived today.  I quickly opened the package and unscrewed the one I was using to compare the two.

Donny's machining work is nice and smooth and the blackening is even. Knurling is professionally machined and everything threads together smoothly.  No rough spots whilst screwing.  The anodized black is less conspicuous and gives an overall cleaner look to my Prod.  The adapter's thread protector cover is nice should I ever decide to remove the LDC and go "naked". ...though I'm not sure I'd ever want to do so.  The cover is provided either way.

I didn't realize Donny had updated his website to include new shroud adapters and it also shows he's got some new LDC's coming down the pike.

Anyway, here are some pics...

Old raw aluminum vs Donny's anodized.

Looks like he's got a shroud adapter for the Taipan Mutant/Veteran now as well, also one for the FX Impact I believe.  I got mine from TalonTunes already for my Veteran but one can now get one straight from Donny when you shop for an LDC.

Sorry, I usually post links but don't want to be labelled a shill.  Yes, I do jump atop Donny's nuts all the time but I gotta tell you, the Sumo really is a nice product.  I got into AG's at a good time, that's for sure!  I don't even miss my powder burners.

Looks like quality work.  Is there enough room to remove the fill cap without removing the LDC?  It appears like it is too close.

No room, gotta remove ldc.  It takes a matter of seconds with no point of impact change whatsoever.

Even with no poi, hate taking it on and off.  Same issue with the adapter on ebay.   I think if it was just a 1/4" or so longer, the cap could come off.  Maybe Gen II?

Thanks!  Donny is an old Friend from the TAG, but I have lost touch over the years.

Simple solution. Take the cap off and use a rubber tire valve stem cap to cover the nipple

Well, I like the look and profile of the oem cap, better than a foster fitting and plastic cap. ;)  JMO: When you make an adapter for a specific gun, it should be designed to be used without those compromises.  ie offer some advantage over what is already available: http://www.ebay.com/itm/201678377810?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT (http://www.ebay.com/itm/201678377810?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)

Again, JMO.

I like the OEM cap better too, but it beats having to take the LDC off every time you fill. The more you take it on and off, the more chance you have of buggering one of the threads

Agree.

For smaller diameter LDC's you can modify the cap and get clearance.  For larger ones, like shown, that won't work.  Maybe move the whole shroud forward 1/4" or so?  Probably not hard to make a spacer to fill in that gap by the breech.

I did see those adapters on the fleabay but wanted aluminum and not steel, so I had my own made at work, but again, the threads on it felt like it may be cutting into the threads of the ldc and I didn't want to chance that.  This new aluminum one that's been anodized threads butter-smooth.  Taking the ldc off doesn't bother me as I thought it would.  If I had POI change then that'd be a no-go for me and I would have stayed with my Rocker1 ldc as you don't have to remove it to fill.  It's been great but I like the Sumo on it better and it performs better.

Even if the LDC does not cause any poi changes, it is very easy to tighten or loosen the shroud as you take the LDC on/off which can impact poi.  This style of adapter does seem to be the "standard" and works for many guns, it is just that the prod has such a short shroud that it is not ideal.
