 So, here's a NEW question on the 400...
   What does the end of your bolt probe look like??
            Hollow with a hole in the side that faces the valve?   Similar to the OEM probe in a QB78 (crosman 160)?

 I am a little confused looking at mine, if it is something a former owner did to it,  or like that from the factory...
 Opposite the hole in the side it has about a 45 degree angle ground onto it. It is kind of lopsided for chambering the pellet.
   And , I took the advice after all, polishing the end of that indicator.  Took the probe out and pushed a pellet through and it was pretty mangled.
     Also finding I have to mess with it a bit feeding a pellet from the magazine.  Maybe to do with the bolt probe .
   Wonder if I should cut it off and put a pin in for a pusher.
 Now I know why... the Daisy wadcutters are a few thousands longer than the pick off(?) that loads them in the chamber.
 And my Gamo Match are even longer..

 And occured to me why the angle is there..clearance for the end of the indicator.

Very interesting.
My 1962 400 does not have that indicator and I had no clue that there were any changes made to the action of the 2nd variant, I thought the only changes were stock and trigger group / safety related.

 My Crosman manual (down loaded) makes no mention of it.  Schematic shows the screw that holds it in place but that's all.

 Tore it all down again today (still a darn hiss coming out the barrel while shooting) new exhaust valve hasn't fully seated yet (?)
This time I looked again at the seal and while apart I cleaned rust as best I cold and B.C. cold blued.

 a little better...

 What holds the safety bushings in place?   
Mine keeps working out a bit, left side, and i have to give it a rap.

They're just pressed in place, into the wood. Maybe a tiny bit of epoxy would solve that?

I think the linkage may be a little worn for easy loading.
I have to hold my thumb against the side to properly load a pellet in the gate.

Hi Wendell, There's a set screw that holds the pellet  loading gate on the shaft, there's a shallow hole in the shaft that the set screw keys into to align the loading gate it might not be aligned correctly.

Thanks, James, I studied on that when I had it all apart, and know I have it centered there.
 Thinking the rectangle hole in the cover for the shaft  may have worn a bit over time.
As it goes, I know it lines up great when the probe goes home.

 Well, I just did an interesting mod.   I kept watching how things lined up on that 400 action as I racked the probe in and out.
 Realised  that when I had the shuttle(?) lined up to grab a pellet out of the mag, I still had a bit of room behind the probe.
 That is, if opened all the way, things are worn enough that the shuttle goes by a little bit,and that's where I had to use my left thumb to hold it in place.

 Soooo, I removed the screw and plug behind the probe, and I inserted a 1/4" long piece of green surgical tubing.
    Much like the "green booger" behind the hammer spring in a 362! 
 All back together, and now this green bumper keeps me from racking it back too far!   Shuttle lines up just right for the mag!!

  I have come up with a question on the 400 Repeater valve...

This has a seal kit in it, and when I first put new CO2 in it the first couple or 3 shots it sounds like it stutters.  So I got a redone valve stem from Rick at Precision Pellet.   (works better than the 3'd one that came with the ebay seal kit.)
 This seems to hold gas pretty good now. Howerever, still stutters at the beginning,and when the gas pressure drops toward the end I can hear it hiss out the barrel unless I cock it.

My question is, do I need a stronger spring in the valve??

Either that, or your new seal isn't properly mating with the valve seat, or you have a bit of debris in the valve.

 I will probably need to get a tin or two of pellets through it.
  Don't get to shoot as much as I'd like being in an apartent.

  So I've decided I have to replace the spring in the valve.
After it fires,with the hammer still against the stem, you hear it hiss when you've opened the bolt. It'll stop when you recock it .
 Stem too long??  Spring is weak?   
 I'll try the spring first...

 And, finally, SUCCESS!   
   Changed out the  spring to one a tiny bit stiffer. But then , before it all went back together, I took a couple of strokes across the end of the stem with a hand file.

No more chatter when I first shoot after gassing up.
 No more hiss coming from the chamber if I don't cock it.
   Now I need the building to empty out of the other tenants!
   I want to shoot!
