Tuesday - October 6

It was much warmer this morning (70ºF) at dawn; but there was NO breeze. I hunted until almost 11:00 a.m. and the squirrels were still moving around. But I wimped out - just too hot. Two thing worth noting: The first squirrel took two hits. The first shot zinged off the bridge of her nose and sort of stunned her. She moved to the other side of the limb while I reloaded. Then, when I was ready, she came back to the top of the big limb. This time the shot was through the left eye and out the other side. [The picture shows how she landed.] The other item of note is that I recovered the JSB from the shoulder area of the third squirrel. Very mashed up looking pellet.
No hunt tomorrow because I have to visit the little lady doctor who fitted my hearing aids. Oh, yes, they do work!

the EDIT: I forgot to mention that the second squirrel, a male, barked himself to death. Hee hee

Nice job with those nutters Mike. I don't mind when they bark. It lets me know exactly where they are

But I have learned a lesson. A few times when the squirrels were barking, it wasn't at me. It was at a cat nearby. So of course I had no clue there was a cat stalking the squirrels, and I took the shots. At least 3 different times the same dang cat came out of nowhere and grabbed the squirrel and ran, before I knew what was happening. That big male cat has a taste for squirrel and even when I chase him he doesn't drop the squirrel, except for 1 time when I snuck up behind him and startled him. Now I mostly leave the squirrels alone when they bark, because the cats conseal themselves well and I can't see if there is one in the bushes or not.

Thanks Harry. I see coyotes and dogs in the woods occasionally. I don't remember ever seeing a cat out there. I guess they don't range out that far from the subdivisions that are near. I do hear others barking farther away - and that is probably a hawk or owl. $:-\$

Wow, same here. My hunting buddy's are always amazed at my AG kills. The usual reply from the one avid hunter is " Pellet guns are not what they used to be". I keep reminding him my primary AG's ARE the pellet/bb guns of our childhood. Daisy 880's, just hot rodded 880's.

I tried to explain it to a good friend who is a bird hunter with his new dog. I shared with him Rsterns post on grouse. My buddy just can't imagine it. I explained to him at least for me, that IS the fun. Single .22 projectile, low speed, extreme precision required, stealth, good hunting skills etc.As I told him, it is just as much fun for me to build these weapons as it is to hunt with them.

Yes, I know it is late in the day, but my Judy and I just got home. We went to a birthday party for my mother. Today she celebrated 96 years on God's earth.

I started the day of celebration by hunting in her back pasture. It is about 1.5 acres big surrounded on three sides by trees of various kinds; and there are about eight pecan trees inside the rectangle. There is a mixture of Fox Squirrels and Grays in the area this year. I told the story to one of my brothers-in-law this way: One squirrel was too far, one was too close, and two were just right. The "too close" one was directly above me and jumped out of the tree when I shot. It landed about a foot or so away from me and immediately dashed away before I could reload. I stopped hunting about 8:30 a.m. (squirrels still moving all over the place), and went inside to visit with my sister and her husband (they live in Georgia now.) It was a very satisfying hunt.

This season is starting great.

I love the tinkering aspect too. The whole thing requires a lot of skill and that is what makes it so addictive...you always have that next level to get to.

A couple of seasons ago, while walking (too muddy for bicycle) back to the truck, I heard some 4-wheelers approaching from behind. They stopped when they pulled along side and we talked. They offered me a ride the rest of the way to my truck. I discovered they were deputies with the local Sheriff's Department. No problem carrying a hunting rifle around here. They were not even concerned if I had a valid Hunting License (which I did.) Louisiana is truly a "Sportsman's Paradise!"
