I have had several FWB 300S's. What is the difference between the "S" and the non"S" model?

The 300 came out first, in 1969; the 300S came out in 1971. The former has more of a sporter stock and a different cocking handle. The 300S was in production for over 20 years, with a number of models such as standard, universal, mini, running boar, and mini or Junior.

Thank you for the info. Was the mechanical system the same? I see the 300 appears to not have the barrel weight. Was the recoil damper the same?

mechanics are basically the same, very small changes to the parts. Most (not all- please correct if needed) parts interchangeable between 300/300s. Not sure which ones.

300S introduced:
shorter barrel
shorter cocking arm with top latch vs. "car door" type
quite a few trigger modifications
different stocks and trigger guards
"stepped" instead of straight barrel sleeve
Basic guts of both models remain the same though. There were quite a few transitional guns that combine some new and old features, the serial number and model stamping on the receiver determine what it is.
Some trigger bits for the 300 are very hard to find, but most 300S parts are still around.
That's actually my guns and photo posted above. The barrel sleeves are usually epoxied on, but on my 300 it's not, and was removed for the picture. For casual use, guns without sleeves are very desirable IMHO, that weight hanging way out front makes a big difference.
The 300 is often described as more sporter-like due to the shallower woodwork; but the S handles well, too. The later fore end is deeper, but also slightly narrower.
The number of 300S variations over its production run are quite amazing, and probably cover more ground than the diffs between the 300 and early 300S.
