Ok I have two spots that we can use, both have overnight camping..... I would like to arrange it a day where there is the less amount of ppl in the area. Tell me what you think, most campers leave on Sunday, I would like it to be Saturday to talk eat and BS, Sunday to scout the area, and Monday is the one day challenge, after I get a go with that I will the pick a date, then the rules. The places that I have in mind is the Sequoia National Forrest, Figueroa Mountain in the Los Padres National Forrest, and if anyone has any other public land or ranch that we could use please let me know...Thanks

Baxter, I think you could compress that schedule quite a bit. BS, scout and camp one day and the competition the next

Get at the northern end of Sequoia NF nearer Kings Canyon and you may get a few of us Nor Cal guys to make the drive south ?

Gotta have ample targets tho .... Able and willing air gunners make short work of killin dirt rats

Mentioned Carrizo Plains area,think it's most accessible to vehicles! The area also has a large population of GS,Jackrabbits,cottontail and Coyotes.The area is more central as so everyone might have an equal share of driving. Too there are several campground suitable to a large group with low traffic of people. I really think this area might be the most suitable for an event as this. I agree that having one day before to scout the lay of the land would be great,then following day get out bright and early to hunt. Would be nice to get a good turnout from GTA members. As far as specific location I would urge that it only be made known through PMs due to not wanting EVERYONE to have access to hunting area. Some like to keep areas secret from outside GTA forum...

This is good advice for a couple of other reasons too.
One being that we don't want just any Tom, Dick, and Harry coming who are not actual AG'ers and/or may be looking to cause problems.
the other being, ... well lets just say there are some (PE)ople who like (T)o pl(A)y "vigilanty activists", and can cause problems for the sole purpose of drawing attention to there "cause".

This is something we have to deal with every year in our 4H Livestock projects. when the kids are at the fairgrounds taking their animals to auction, and the "vigilantes" show up to attempt to traumatize our kids who have raised Market Animals for meat.

Carrizzo plains would definatly be one area to consider

There is ample room for group camping at more than one area so that would be a plus

Couple of things to consider about that area though

If I'm right there is no running water out there any where most camp areas are dry at least I think thats how it is out there

There is no target shooting on the carrizzo

$50 fine if cought and I have buddies who did !! Lol

There are a number of no shooting zones on the carrizzo these are normally posted and fenced but not always at least last time I was out there As long as your not standing on the other side of the posted area shooting into it your good !!

Some of this may have changed since I was last out there and air gun target shooting may be gtg considering they aren't considered firearms however it might be something to check into should we decide
To go that route.

On another note. There should be plenty of gs and jacks out there for the taking plus it's a good coyote calling area too !!

Gamoshooter is correct about the Carrizzo Plains.
It has always been the headquarters for the California Condor and the restrictions of target shooting.
I would think Las Padres NF or the Los Angelese NF south of Bakersfield would be good.
Growing up in San Fernando (a long time ago, (before Magic Mountain)) we used to chase everything in the hills surrounding Valencia.
Good camping around Lake Hughes.
With reference to Carrizzo Plains, the road ifrom I-5 to the coast is a real winner.
You had better be prepared for anything water, fuel, food.
I know there is one gas sation on that road.
When the rest of the state was paying $2.00 a gallon, they were charging $4.00.
That is oil country too.

As far as I know from frequenting all of the areas mentioned,"Target Shooting" is a no go almost everywhere now days. Since hunting is the purpose for this event than I see no real issue. Those taking part in this event would need a valid CA hunting license carried at all times. The Carrizo Plains is patrolled on the regular by DFW and enforced. The area is huge and should provide plenty of GS hunting opportunity.

Target shooting with air rifles are ok on federal land as per every DFG that has seen us target it shooting where it was a no, no, pertains to fire arms only at this time, Just my experience out of the 6 times checked out,

How about Modoc or Lassen counties. Ranchers will love to have you shoot gophers ground squirrels plus NO CONDORS. Sure as *(&^ some one at other sites would bring up lead. We are going to be really careful about this issue in the future. Iron Hand

I don't think ranchers would go for a large group of strangers roaming they're land shooting. Would be nice to have a situation like that but I just don't see that being a reality.

Actually in Surprise California they love as many people as they can get on their land to get those GS but that is way far away.

Yup, Belding GS's up above Alturas could be a group thing in the spring months No problem !!
Sadly only a 3 +/- month window there top side and active tho.

Last trip up @ 6 weeks ago netted over 1000 kills in 2 1/2 days.
Total time with the .22 PCP was @ 4 hours being 2 each morning before winds kicked up ... @ 160 kills there alone !!

Yea, would be one heck of a trip for those who never experienced such killing fields.
