Put my G1 Extreme on the chopping block

I cut 5 inches off the length of the barrel, then recrowned it. It looks and handles a lot better.`I hope to take and post pics. I had wanted to cut the barrel off at 12 inches total length but with the breechblock butted up against the spindle of the lathe, only 5.25" protruded from the chuck.
It doesn't look so thin and whippy now.

I hope to be able to shoot it this weekend. It should help with accuracy, by decreasing barrel movement before the pellet exits.
It may help with velocity, too. Don't know.
It sure looks better.

I have the quest phantom an g-1 all cut to 39 inches they all handle an shoot better then stock. Just cut with hacksaw file the end then used 600 grit sandpaper to finish smooth. used a demeral cone shape stone for the crown. put the muzzle brake back on the g-1 the quest an phantom left bare. removing front an rears an taking off about 5 inches of barrel brings the quest an phantom down to 5 1/2 pounds or 8 oz lighter. Think you will like the chop.plus they still cock easy.

Got all my springer barrels no longer than 13 1/2. Read a while back on springer barrel after 12 inches is friction for the pellet. With shorter barrel, the pellet leaves the barrel faster and somewhat solves maintaining follow up on your shot.

I chopped everyone of the 3 Crosmans that I have. Made them much easier to handle. I'm always banging into something with the longer AGs. Put muzzzle brakes on all 3 to make them easier to cock. And they are as accurate as before the chop.

I have chopped 3 Remington Summits and 2 Quest 1000 and I loved them all. The folks I built them for loved them also. I even offered to buy each one if they didn't and nobody will sell me one so I had to chop my own. Really like the carbine fell and handling of the rifles. Have a Ruger Black Hawk that the parts from J.M. came in today will tune it tomorrow and chop the barrel on it and turn a new muzzle break, can't wait this is my gun for a change. I'm trying to match the performance of the Custom Air Hawk that I brought from Mr. Gene a couple of years back. I use it as my benchmark to gauge my tune jobs on these guns.

I do need to post pics, Gene. First, I gotta find the digital camera.
I cut my barrel off at about 13.5 inches total length from breech to muzzle. I recrowned it on the lathe with a right hand turning tool and the compound rotated about 10-15 degrees. I used a center drill to do the actual crown. it has a concave muzzle/recessed crown. Looks and sounds really cool, and was very simple to do.
Toolmaker did it long before I did. He gave me the idea for it.
I'm thinking about chopping the barrel of my HW95 and making a brake from black Delrin with O-ring grooves and O-rings for grip. My HW95 has an R1 length barrel. I bet I'd regain some lost velocity and improve accuracy, too.
My B30 and RWS48 may get the barrels chopped to about 12 inches, also. I've always been a fan of carbines.
Now, I wish I'd kept my MP512M and chopped the barrel and made a brake for it.

That's what I want to do to my HW. I like the R11 look. I was thinking about cutting the barrel to R7 length or a little shorter, and installing a heavy shroud.
I thought about making a full length barrel shroud for the G1, because I like the bull barrel look on a springer. I have some 1/2" ID/1" OD seamless steel tube that should blue beautifully. It's low carbon, 1125 alloy, or something like that. At worst, I'd give it a coat of gun blue Dura Coat.
Short, stiff barrels seem to work well for powerful springers. IIRC, the RWS 48 and B30 have a barrel diameter of 18 or 19 mm. I miked them yesterday, but have already forgotten the exact measurements.

you know.... I really would like to see some actual hard data on Barrel length vs velocity in a modern springer... because a shorter dwell time in the barrel WOULD make a gun alot less hold sensitive
I know the cardew's did some experimenting and on the older lower velocity guns they reached full speed in around 7 inches if I recall correctly(it was close to that anyways) but with the newer mag and super mags I would be very curious to see what the results would be....
man that could get kinda expensive lol
Then again you could get a spare barrel for say a phantom/g1/quest for about 20 bucks to test springers in .177 and a spare barrel or two from the SS series and mount them to a trail np and test different calibers and maybe the differences between gas and spring powered guns.... hrmmmm
to bad I dont have a spare hundred or so laying around!!!! LOL

I haven't been able to take pics yet, due to technical difficulties.
I shot it just a few minutes ago. I first ran some cleaning pellets through it then I shot it.
I didn't shoot at a formal target. I didn't re-sight it in.
What I noticed is that it is a LOT more consistent in it's grouping. It seems to be more accurate, though that could e a perspective thing due to more consistent grouping.
It's definitely less hold sensitive. I held it like I'd hold a powder burner and it grouped fine.
Now I really wish I'd kept that MP512M and chopped the barrel.
BUT, money was tight at the time. It helped fund my HW30s, which may get the barrel chopped too.
I'm thinking about chopping the barrel on the folding stock, sidelever B3 (looks like a folding stock AK).
Krinkov length should be about right for it.

I chopped my G1 .22 barrel down to 12 1/2 inches today, from breech to crown. I put a Crosman muzzlebreak on it and the gun measures 38 1/2 inches now. Very compact and accurate carbine now. It is a little harder to cock however. I don't think I'll be taking 100 shots with it in one shooting session.
