Sugru/Oogru

I am always keeping my eyes open for better ways to do things and new products out on the market to make life easier.

First Gorilla Glue and then Gorilla Tape ended up in my toolbox and now I have a new addition: Oogru!

First; WTH is Sugru? Have you ever put down a big glob of silicone only to find that it is still uncured in the middle the next day and will squeeze out? Polymerization in silicone is initiated from moisture in the atmosphere. That moisture has to migrate into the center through the silicone and takes a long time. But if you could introduce moisture throughout the silicone in the beginning then it would cure much more rapidly.

A post grad product design student came up with the idea in 2003 and worked on it a few years with Dow Corning to come up with a silicone that is more like play-doh. Hand formable but sticks to anything but can still be removed.

Sugru is very handy but can be expensive. $10 for 3-5 gram packs. Perfect for small jobs but cost prohibitive for anything else. So someone at Instructables came up with their own variation and named it Oogru. And all it is is clear silicone with corn starch. The corn starch had a minute amount of moisture in it and kicks off the polymerization. Mixed in rations of silicone to corn starch of 1/1 to 5/1 gives you a working time from 5 minutes to 2 hours. And you can add a few drops of linseed oil based paint to color it how you want. Still kind of messy but manageable but then I found it is easier to mix it up and use a disposable cake decorating bag to put it in and squeeze it out how you want.

Mixed with black paint and it should be perfect for bedding/filling a plastic stock like my prod. I am also interested in seeing how the silicone paint works and what I could use that for. Guess that will be my next experiment.

I was gifted a few packs of Sugru and so far the only use I've found for it is putting it on the dampeners of my charcoal grill. I've gotten the grill pretty darn hot (searing steaks) plenty of times and the stuff is still hanging on. It will still burn the far out of you if you hold on to it but, it doesn't transfer heat nearly as quick as the metal did.

It's definitely a unique material but, unfortunately I haven't found much use for it. That's mostly my lack of imagination though.

Sugru is great. I have a pot that the original silicone holder tore on. The sugru works great and was easy to use.

I had the same thought as Ron, to use it (actually the cheap, home made stuff instead) to bed the barrel into the stock.

Now as far as using the three pack of Sugru I have? Well, I work on electrical, electronics, mechanical, hydraulics, air systems, computers and a whole bunch more stuff. Whatever it takes to keep the shop working So the pack went into my drawer that has the 1 min, 5 min, 20 min epoxies, underwater epoxy, epoxy putties, JBWeld, 3 different kinds of super glue, gorilla glue, airplane glue, contact cement and 4 different kinds of silicone
