One thing to keep in mind with the milk-jug tune is that it can slow down the action if you use plastic/hdpe that is too thick.  You shouldn't have to shove the spring in, or reduce the diameter of the tophat.  If so, your sleeve material is too thick.
I had good luck with a 2 liter Mountain Dew bottle when I did this to my old Airhawk, but that was after trying a few different (thicker) pieces of plastic/hdpe.
And you guessed it: the plastic replaces the oem metal sleeve.
