....... you could "float" most of your 43" barrel if you really want to.... Personally, I think that would be a mistake....

Having schlepped that octagon around the house a few times I would have to agree...

But now there's another issue I hadn't noticed until I shoved something up it..
There seem to be TWO balls lodged in it, about 15" apart - up near the muzzle.
Who can say whether there's powder between them?

I understand the procedure is to pull them out the muzzle with a puller consisting of an extended wood- (or sheet metal-) type screw going through a thick centering washer.
They sell a puller like that (wood-type screw, machine threaded on the other end, with a brass washer,) it's pretty cheap. I can drill the shallower one from the muzzle -SLOWLY- verrrrry slowly...
I have a very long 1/4" drill...

[NOTE: on second look, it appears there's a ~15" long rod in there that 'crumpled' at the muzzle end... not so scary, I can dribble some water down there...
Yeah, y'know what? It even passes air... someone just tried to use an inadequate, too-thin ramrod, and failed miserably. I can even see a little light, now that the sun's out, on a very snowy yard.]

To use that puller tool (not sure I still need or can even use it, scarring the current ~.357" rusted bore is a non-issue -  but the double ended screw would be handy...)

it looks like I'll have to start with the type of experiments that will preface
the drill/reamer extension exercises, later on. DYI shaft extensions....

Have to check my reamers and see if I can make it any easier to pull once it's dislodged.
Looks like I've begun the barrel drilling process....
