Iron Sight Solution For Shrouded Crosman Rifles

I've been shooting my .177 NPSS for years now thinking "if only this thing had irons..."  The rifle just isn't accurate enough in .177 to reach much further than 50 yards.  I never found myself reaching for the bulky NPSS when I planned on shooting past 50 yards, but inside 50 yards, a scope just isn't that useful.  I would rather have the larger field of view allowed by iron sights.  I probably haven't touched this rifle in months since it just doesn't do any job as well as my Disco or my daisy 901.  Today I did a little something to make the NPSS more practical.

I grabbed the front sight off my disco since it wasn't doing any good on a scoped rifle.  I stuck it on the shroud of the NPSS and found that it matched up perfectly.  I used some industrial strength double sided tape and pressed it in place.



I had this Williams peep sight laying around, so I tried fitting it.



It didn't quite fit.  Apparently the grooves in the NPSS receiver are slightly wider than normal. I took to the shop and filed a little material from the inside of the dove tail.





Success!



Hold on!  I know what you're thinking.  The rear sight is not on the barrel, aren't you going to lose zero every time you reload?  Probably a little, but I swear to you the thing shoots great!   When sighting the rifle in at 30 yards I was having no trouble hitting my credit card sized steel plate.  It probably doesn't hurt that I have a pair of Gene's fantastic brass barrel bushings. The ridiculous sight radius doesn't hurt either...



We'll see how it works out in the long run, but for now I couldn't be happier.  If you have an NPSS or a Trail series rifle, don't give up on iron sights.  If there's a will there's a way, and in this case it's pretty easy.

There are shotgun sights like that front sight also. I haven't really looked for them but the ones I've noticed have been pretty pricey for what they are. Nice hack on the rear sight! Both actually.. Better than my electrical tape improvised sights when I was testing my scope!
