5 gallon Bucket and Lid $5
10# bag of Rubber Mulch $10
yard sale bed sheet $1
total with sales tax    $16

(also need a step ladder)

1...dump mulch in bucket
2...cut center out of lid
3...lay sheet over bucket
4...snap remaining "ring: from Lid on to Bucket, keep sheet tight
5...jam Bucket between lowest to step of ladder
6...Shoot at will

the really cool thing about a "dense but loose" fill material is that it is self healing...poke a hole in it and gravity and vibration will settle the fill to close up the opening....shooting in the same spot won't drill through the fill material, each shot gets the full material depth to resist penetration...

we here at House of HYspd, have been blasting away at this with a 16fpe .177 and a 18.8fpe .22 for about a week with no problems....

but there always that doubt...just WHAT will this thing take?...how much is too much? well, today I went to this weekends Low Country Fun Shoot in Cross South Carolina and dv8eod let me take a few pot shots at the "mulchtainer" with is Evanix .45 that has been Chronied at 770fps+ with 170gr slug for 177FPE!!(and one ADDICTIVE airgun that there Evanix is)

at 20 yards (or was it 25?), the rubber mulch stopped the big slugs at a depth of about 12", but given the size of the "wound" channel and the power of the shots, the mulch was packing around the channel and not letting it refill very well....dv8eod had not had a chance to recover undistorted shot slugs we were digging them out for examination after each shot...so each shot was taken at a freshly refilled bucket....my "hands in" guestimate is that 2 stacked shots might be a problem (we didn't try it to find out) and 3 stacked shots WILL be a problem....

here are some really terrible videos of the second shot and a quick look at the back side afterward

and

one last bit of useful information, these .45 cal slugs were a semi wadcutter design with a large meplat and sharp edge at the first full diameter driving ring...they are big and round and they drill a big round hole!

PS!...a 10# bag of rubber does NOT fill the 5 gallon bucket, it leaves about 2" of growth room for spent pellets so the top 2-3" from the top of the bucket as it sits when ready for use should not be shot at...adding extra mulch to fill the bucket is require for full face use...

Very nice!  I like the sheet idea for holding the mulch in.  I'm thinking a Rubbermaid container filled for a little more shooting area.  Cut a square out of the lid and put it back on with the sheet underneath it.  Replace the sheet as needed.  I think a full, queen or king sized sheet would go a long way.

What about instead of the bed sheet, take a look at cloroplast.  This is the plastic material that most gas stations use for advertisement for pop or smokes.  They typical throw them away anyway, either that or campaign signs that were out in peoples lawns this past week ;)

political signs are the greatest supply of chloroplast....unfortunately, it's also noisy and chunks when hit with decent power or after getting a weeks of sunlight....

the comment when my titan .22 hit the chloroplast sighting target at the fun shoot, to quote Oletomcat,"that thing hits pretty good" and yeah it does..

the nice part about a the bed sheet is with domes it tries to close back up...that sheet had over 60 shots through it before we took the .45 to it...dv8eod's comment while we were digging through it to find the .45 slugs was there sure is a lot of pellets in here...which was echo'd by Oletomcat the next day when he used the mulchtainer to retrieve some Carson Rat Sniper hollow point slugs in .25, as was digging out spent pellets by the dozen too...

honestly, I was really expecting the .45 to blow it to smithereens

Bringing this one up again in cause it's that time of year when the pellets are in full migration

Thanks for bringing this up again.  I don't know how I missed this.

I've been doing this same thing, but I've been using a cardboard box, and 2 storage tubs stack on top of each other to get the right height.

I'll be switching to this bucket method now.  I've already got a ladder, and buckets.  That would work much better than what I've been using.

Thanks for the tip :)

I've been using a cardboard box full of mulch, with some putty lining the back. The box is 6" deep, and the putty covered the last 3/4" or so. I;ve not had anything go through it, or even close - only shooting 30fpe .22 and a 15fpe .177, but its sure solid!

I've been using this "Mulch bucket pellet trap" idea since April, and I love it.

Only difference is I used a square bucket, and that seems to fit better in between the upper steps if I want to raise the trap higher.  I also packed down my bucket full to the top, and placed a piece of cardboard behind the fabric just to keep the face of the trap flat and smooth for fresh targets.

This was an awesome idea and I'm really digging it!!!!

I haven't had a single pellet escape the trap.  The only way I could imagine anything escaping this trap is if you were hitting at the very edge of the trap and having the projectile come out the side, but there is no way anything is getting to the bottom of that trap, unless it is a super powered powder burner.  I've fired 22LR into the trap and can't get much more than few inches of penetration.

will regular sawdust/woodchip mulch work? Nobody sells rubber mulch here and my cardboard box supply is running low.

I have used mulch traps and others.  I did try packed shavings, borrowed from my wife's horse trailer.  At about 8'' deep they didn't stop much.  13 ft lbs would go through.

I use old clothing stuffed in a cardboard box along with a 2x12 cut the width of the box for added security. It can handle 155 slug at 207fpe from a 909 with no problem. When done I just shake the clothes out for the lead and repack if the clothes are no to shot up.

Same bucket of mulch with hole in top but cut cardboard circle covered both sides with duct tape and taped to bucket... add layer of tape as needed...

Same Box O Clothes with wood in back... duct taped box so it would last longer ad layer as needed...

This one here worked like a dream. Packed the box with clothes and so far no pass throughs. Thanks for that little gem!

I may try shooting a .22LR at it and see what happens.
