But I'm curious..any reason why just shimming my scope wouldn't be acceptable if I never plan on using open sights?

If the shimming is excessive it is possible to damage the scope tube if the front and rear rings are no longer in line, and shimming one ring does mis-align it with the other to some degree.

Datasponge, sounds like you should try the barrel bending procedure. I've never had the problem cross my bow. Problems I've had were always shooting low which using a barrel droop mount took care of. Read carefully the whats and hows of it. Lee

Hi Mike,  Just reading this and sorry for your accident.
I think you have the answer from the elders on this subject.  Don't over-shim your scope and crunch the tube...it doesn't take much misalignment, to compromise the scopetube.  0.006" is a bunch to start stacking up on 1 mount.  Seems like you have a more pronounced bend...not uncommon w/ your accident.    Lucky that you have an option to correct it tho, Bud.  Go slow and I'm sure you'll get it back correct.  Take a minute to Post your success, and Thank the Elders, when you get her back to zero!

This may sound kind of crude but going Caveman on it is the best way to fix it

I bought a Diana model 35 about a year ago and the barrel was bent upward a little. I tried several methods but I just couldn't put enough pressure where it was needed to bend it straight. The bend was right where the barrel goes into the breech block. I guess that's the right term to use? Anyway after days of using suggested methods requiring clamps and other tools I decided to take the advice of a GTA member and use what I now call the Caveman Method. Basically wrap the breech block with a dish towel and stick it in the crook of a tree and pull down on it. When I did this the first time it bent a little so I did it again and it's pretty close to being perfectly straight. The open sight sits dead center elevation wise sighted in at 20 yards.

It took me about an hour and a half to fix it only because I put it together and shot it after the first bend. Assuming nothing else is damaged just find a nice crook in a tree at the right height and go for it.

I had to replace the barrel of my Hatsan 135 after it got away from me but it shot feet high not inches. Hey it happens to more of us than want to admit it From what you have said I think all your barrel needs is a tweak from the crook of tree, Caveman style.

I finally got a chance to attempt the barrel bending today.  I spent some time trying to make a clamp contraption like the picture but I knew I'd run out of daylight before I even got one assembled well enough to do the job. 
 
So...  I just put the barrel in the workbench vice and gradually applied muscle and bent the barrel back.  Honestly, I just pulled a little and couldn't tell if I bent the barrel at all.

I just decided to go take some test shots, and sure enough the pellet was shooting much lower.  I left it at that. I took the shim out of my scope mount and just zeroed back in. 

Good as new!

And the gun definitely seems to be liking the JSB diabolo exacts now.

Thanks, gang for teaching me about barrel bending. I would NEVER have thought of doing such a thing.  Turns out it was quite simple for my case.

Because shimming the scope mount puts stress on the scope tube. Don't be afraid to bend the barrel back. It's very easy and very effective.

I too have had that happen. I took the barrel off, put the breach in a vice and pulled down on it in small increments till it was straight. I would not want to try to shoot a pellet in a straight line through a curved barrel. Just me!

I hear that. The thought of it was quite disturbing to me.  I hope to never have a need for it again, but it's not so bad.
