What about the possibility/feasibility of using GoogleMap?

I've dropped them a message. Will see what/if they respond. But seems it will cost us $19.85 a month to keep it alive.

I have been in contact with them. They are looking into grandfathering our map and not charging. She told me to be patient....will try. Maybe she can work some magic.

I know the map has been a good thing for the forum but I really hate a scam... But, if they won't grandfather us in.
I'd drop them like a cheap plastic air gun.

UMap may be an option as a free and self hosted alternative.
It's open source under the WTFPL license.
 8)

Now self hosted may eat a tad more band width and would depend on where it's hosted as to additional costs.
I'd be willing to see about setting up a test server to host this running off my internet access.

If we are Grandfathered in? Who's to say some Bean Counter doesn't change that down the road?
Better to be preemptive then get a kick in the nads in a year or so.

Now before anyone thinks it would raise my Internet bill? Don't worry about that!
I have the fastest plan I can get here and don't come close to eating it up!
I did a lot of gaming stuff in the past so I have always had the fastest access I can get.

Well,
If the majority of the membership thinks the map is not worth keeping I understand.
I also understand that feeling like we have been scammed, or ransomed, or extorted, or whatever floats your particular boat can cause justifiable anger.
But if they won't grandfather us in, and we do not pay "the Ransom", we will lose that helpful tool we have developed to benefit everyone here. That would be a sad thing in my opinion.
Trust me, I would much rather go with my typical knee-jerk reaction in anger, and tell them to shove it up their tailpipes,
But sometimes that is not the best way.

If we can't get grandfathered in, and with 2000+ members on the map,
I would think that enough folks could pull together and contribute to keeping the map.
$200 should not be very hard to raise to keep it for a year.

So for those here who have ever benefited by meeting others to enjoy our sport please help out and hit the donations tab and send what you can. C'Mon guys we are only talking $5 from 40 people to make that happen. Anything more just goes to help keep the GTA going.

I'll send in a donation now.

Maps working for me again, I am kind of perplexed with all of the shooters we have in the tri-state area, SC, NC and Ga. it's amazing that we only have a handful of people show up to our monthly shooting events....

Maybe PM a few of the shooters nearby (if you haven't yet). It's possible they never noticed an announcement or post about it, or haven't come across the SC Fun Shoot Gate.

Not a bad idea. Local connections are also handy when buying and selling stuff (and for enabling), especially in Illinois.

Almost like we have 15,000 registered members but less than 100 show up at the annual Fun Shoot.

the map is actually not a good representation of the current and active userbase.  I have found that if you look up x number of shooters in an area, many haven't actually been on the forum for a couple years.  And many of the active forum members aren't on the map. But it's a place to start.

Well you never know......life takes many turns It would be great for me to get to know you and a lot of other people in the community, I'm planning on going to the EBR 2018 in AOA this year, in fact, I've posponed my vacations to have the time to do it, so let's hope that I have enough time and money to travel over there and meet a lot of people.
Let me know how can I send money or where (I have paypal) and I'll do it for the GTA forums.
