I'm going to try to make the BR shoot next Sunday.  I had a great time last fall attending 2 of them.  Its a different discipline from FT, but reading Ione's tricky winds is practice that will go toward my FT shooting's improvement I hope.

See you Sacramento area guys there!  ;D

The match was more like Shooting in the Wind 101. Absolutely fun stretching the leg of an FWB 300S to 25 meters in somewhat windy conditions. I know Ione, CA can get a lot more windy, but today was mild enough for beginners like myself, but yet still windy enough to learn reading wind wanes.

I agree with Calmark and Motorhead that BR is helpful because it helps to remove almost all factors except for wind. Hopefully, I can apply what I learned today to become a better FT shooter.

Everyone was very friendly in the match and freely shared ideas and experience, I learned a lot just from eavesdropping conversations  :o! Thanks to Jim for organizing the event!

As I forecasted, it rained in Fairfield until, about 1:30pm.
I did get some FT practice in afterwards.
you certainly had some nice sun there from the looks of it.

The day turned out to be a nice one!  It was great to get out and shoot with a bunch of other airgun nuts for the first time this year.

The top picture is of the guys performing a "firing squad" on a hapless soda can.  It got walked from 5 yards all the way well past 25 yards and ended up looking like swiss cheese in the process! ;D

Why tail wind drops the POI
« Reply #9 on: April 28, 2014, 11:02:49 PM »
I think I have this figured out. Maybe.

According to Chairgun, tail wind should raise the POI at least for my rifle at 25 meter. However, experience at the range is exactly the opposite. Furthermore, even with 20 MPH wind, the POI should only shift a little bit, not the observed amount during the match.

I think this is why.

Tail wind at the range has to mostly go over the cover structure. As such, there is a small vacuum developed right in front of the benches. This not worthy air moving over the roof of the cover structure down, possibly creating turbulence in the process. With very strong tail wind, I think the turbulence may get past 25 meters and does not shift the POI significantly.

The same probably applies with side wind because the range is surrounded by mounds. This gets even more tricky because lanes that are closer to the mounds experience a different turbulence compared to lanes that are further away.

Matt was absolutely right regarding being able to read wind that is blowing downward.

Well we had 10 shooters come out & brave the questionable Ione weather on Sunday.
Light breezes that shifted threw out the match kept us all on the game of being good dopers ...  ;D

Some pretty darn good scores were posted with Tak and his FWB 300 showing power means squat when you got accuracy and an able shooter behind the trigger.

Anywho ... how the cookies crumbled when all was said and done.

It was nice to meet up with several other GTA guys at the Bench Rest.  I think the results of the match were pretty good, even with shifting winds to contend with.  ;D  I did also notice many shots dip low and I think there is something to that theory of winds rising over the roof and dropping down and pushing slow-moving pellets low.  I used 7.3gr JSB RS in my 7ftlb FWB300S mini and the wind sure did toss some far off my aimpoint.

Thanks for adding in more pictures, Jeff.  I was so caught up with things I only remembered to take the two Niko posted.  I guess we need to bring eggs next time for Frank so he will come and shoot with us.  ;D

Good scores by everyone! I don't know how Tak did it because when I tried his 300S, my POI was an inch and a half lower than my POA! With such a low power, I could see the pellet dropping at 25 meters! He truly has the skills and can shoot that rifle well! :)

I usually take lots of pics - something that I do whenever I'm out with my kids. Hopefully you guys don't mind me snapping pictures every now and then. I'll try to take more pictures next time to share.
