As you can see, I've just completed my first tune up of my Beeman R10-22 Deluxe [San Rafael] after finding that the mainspring was busted.
I built my own spring compressor mounted on a length of TREX. for the screw mechanism, I used one of those heavy wooden clamps that have two handles. That worked out really well because half of each threaded rod is 'left-handed thread' and the other half is normal. This gave me the ability to cause the compression/decompression to be lower geared [more turns to the inch] which really works well when I was compressing the new spring and end cap. You've gotta be gentle on those threads on the end cap.
Anyway, when I pulled the piston out of the rifle, I found that there was a hole in one side that looked like someone had laid a soldering iron on it. Yeah I knew the compression caused a lot of heat, but wow, that was a bit of a surprise. I'm guessing, and those who've done lotsa tuneups may know, that there may have been a small ding in the leading edge of the seal and it grew with every shot until the heat just burned a channel about 1/16 of an inch all the way to the rear of the seal. The piston had what looked like a heat mark [black soot] where the massive heat was coming out.
Well after a good clean and lube [Maccari Black Tar, Clear Tar and Moly] where it was necessary, I reinstalled everything and luckily I didn't have any parts left when I was done!!! Not bad for a Rookie tuner.
Once I'd cleaned the trigger mechanism and placed a pin-head worth of moly on the sear, I proceeded to to install the stock, and the scope [Bushnell Sportview 4x32 AO]. All seemed good so I had enough time left in the day to begin zeroing the scope in.
Oh, I forgot to mention that before I installed the scope, I did fire a couple of pellets through it to see if everything worked OK.
Then I came up to my only hurdle... In re zeroing any scope, I like to "center" the Elevation/Windage dials so they have equal travel to the left/right and up/down. Well, shoot!!! By loosely clamping the scope to the rifle, I proceeded to find the 'center' point on the elevation dial. Looking at a 10 yard target, with my rifle on a mount and sand bag to keep it still, I found that my crosshairs wouldn't even travel from one side of the 10meter pistol targed
to the other.
I then fiddled with the windage dial and noticed that when I moved it, the elevation crosshair began to rise AS THE WINDAGE CROSSHAIR MOVED RIGHT!!! Yerk!!! That's not good
After messing around a bit more I finally gave up and decided that after some 30 years of good and faithful service, I need to go buy myself a new 4x32 or 3-9 x 40 AO scope to replace this Bushnell. After packing up from the verandah, I came in and jumped on my laptop and went to Pyramyd Air to have a look at what available [without breaking the bank].
While looking around the scope section a pop-up chat box came up and asked if I needed help. Well, Yes I did! I chatted with Arthur R about what had happened to my Bushnell Sportview 4x32 and asked for some recommendations. I told him I'd heard that the Gamo scopes are reasonable, but wanted more choices. Arthur suggested I go look at the Hawke and Leapers scopes, which are good quality with reasonable prices. I'm still looking but I did notice that Hawke had a pretty nice one with 5-stars review on it, and was less than a "C-note" which is good. It's a Hawke Sport Optics 3-9x40 AO Sport HD Rifle Scope, 30/30 Duplex Reticle, 1/4 MOA, 1" Tube = $74.99
There's lotsa eye-candy at Pyramyd Air, as you all know, but we just forked out $27,000 to drill a well on the ranch, so I've gotta behave myself with the "Boy Toys" ya know.
Anyway, I though you'd like to hear about my experience. Other than the scope business, I did feel pretty proud about how I handled the first Tune-up; for which I really want to thank Mark611 [Jedi], Charlie-da-tuna, Gene and Jim Maccari. Now I'm ready to save some more pocket money and tune my R10-177 Deluxe which isn't busted, just tired I think.
Anyhow, that's it for now.
Cheers to all.

Vernon -
I know, no response required. Congrats on the well. Now your water man can retire!! Congrats on the successful tune as well. I've been in and out of my Nitro Venom and I think next time I'm in I'll button the piston to smooth the cocking.
As far as the scope - I got that Hawke model myself. It's not the best, but for the money it's a great choice. As a bonus it has a lifetime warranty.

Regarding the Scope Tom,
I think you're right on.
Nothing like a Lifetime Warranty to seal any deal huh.
Cheers n Happy New Year mate.

For a little more cash i would look at the hawke 2-7x32 with mildots. 110.00
A little more power than the 4x and lighter than the 3-9. Though honestly i have a Swift 4-12x40 without mildots on my .20 R10 and i dont mind it out to 30-35 yards(just learned to use Kentucky windage).

congrats on the successful first tune! its always nice to tinker and actually make things better! i busted my tuning cherry on a b3 though, didnt have the confidence to go after a nice rifle like the one youstarted with.
i also have a bushnell sportview 4x32! bought it in 1993 and has done me very well on several shooters from my 1377 carbine to the sladge hammer rws 350. they are tough scopes.
leapers and hawke make very good scopes. leapers/utg are basically the sherman tank of the scope world and they stand behind them. very good customer service. i will alway say they are the best bang for the buck scopes out there. hawke are higher class with finer crosdhairs and clearer glass. if you can spare the change go for the hawke. neither will dissapoint. either way go mildot! easier to correct for elevatilnand wind with mildot.
