Here is my application for ifart. I'm on a constant hunt for vermin in the backyard. I just recently started to take pictures of them, when I came across this site. They use to be all over and come out even with you being outside. Now it's slowed way down. Lucky if I get one a night. We'll here are pictures of my bait station using pb, Nutella, and oil. I just used a piece of wood with two pellet tins nailed to it. I have have red led Christmas lights around the yard to see, but got some diy NV on the way. Also got a hide in the backyard to stay stealthy. Have got some pretty interesting shots so far.

I've managed to get 11 rats so far with my newly set up Pardini K12 carbine, having switched to this less powerful and quieter airgun in .177" just to keep things on the down low. I've shrouded it to make a scope mount easy, fitted a rail to the square aluminum tube shroud and mounted a CenterPoint 3x scope to that. The Carson NV200 sits behind it a few inches. It's modified to place the IR emitter unit well above the monocular, getting the beam clear of the up/down scope turret. A cobbled together plastic grip replaces my proper competition grip, keeping things compact, and allowing for insertion of a wire stock. Yesterday I made a Delrin mount for my Sanyo Xacti HD1010 camera and I'll try to get a rat shot or two captured, though the extra fuss of getting the camera going, lighting my face up of course and taking longer to get pointed at the target, might mean it's going to take a while before a rat sits still long enough. I've covered the whole works in some fleece from an old jacket, making it comfortable to hold on cold evenings and a little bit water resistant for fall rains.





Unfortunately the camera's slow motion video feature doesn't cooperate with the NV200. Lots of banding due to a timing incompatibility between the 300 frame per minute video rate and the refresh rate in the monocular's screen. But the 10 second fixed duration of the slo-mo would make it very difficult to line up and shoot after activating recording anyway, so I'm just using 30 frame per second at fairly low resolution, to match the low quality of the Carson screen. Saw a few rats last night at my neighbour's place but it was raining and they were very skittish due to the presence of two raccoons. At most a rat would stare at me for 2 seconds, then run like crazy. I'll try to find something I can put over the camera screen to dim it a bunch... The raccoons were busy eating walnuts. I grabbed this short clip of one up about 20 feet in the nut tree:



The image quality is bad, and looks worse on the tiny camera screen. Think I might be able to see the reticle well enough on rats closer than 15 metres (about 50 feet) anyway. I'm finding about 5x zoom on the camera gets the best image, lower than that making for a small glowing spot, higher just making it impossible to find anything and too blurry.

Got three more last evening on my latest trip to my neighbour's enormous garden. One in the thick hedge and unreachable, one in the garage roof edge and the same, and then this foot-long monster beside the fence:

The body is about a foot long, tail another foot. One of the biggest I've seen here, where most rats we get seem to be in the 7" to 10" nose to backside range. Again just wandering around quietly, listening mostly then flicking on the NV once I have an approximate direction to point the airgun. All shot between about 3 and 8 metres. A cat was stalking them as well but when she saw me take the first she was following me, apparently trying to learn my technique as she was fascinated with what I was doing. A skimmed joined me for a while as well... stood watching from ten feet away for a couple of minutes before noisily bashing its way back out through the hedge.

I too have rat issues, and am up against the same things you are!

I have a light too, I went black light and it works, but needs to be a little brighter... The light on my guns are too bright and send them running FAST!

I am trying the PB/Nutella mix.

I have been having problems with the .177 doing the job too. I need quiet, so I'm limited to my 1377 at about 10-11 fpe. FINE for head shots but I have yet to get one with a body shot. This is the buggers RARELY offer a stationary shot!!  I have sent a doz flipping thru the air or doing the spins on the ground only to have them get away. Yet with the .22 at 15-16 fpe a hit kills. BUT its too loud.

How are you getting 11fpe's out of a 1377? Ive got one as well,  I think it averages about 4.5 pounds at the muzzle,  at say,  20 yards it's something like just under 3 pounds energy.  Mines stock mind you.

I've got my little brother's 1377 in a drawer awaiting some free time to make a brass adjustable flat-topped piston and the other mods necessary to get it up to around 400fps with 3 pumps. Maybe, just maybe, that'd make it non-annoying enough that he'll be interested in shooting it again after abandoning the thing in a closet for 25 years. The thing is ridiculously accurate, but dang, just no fun at all having to pump it 6 or 7 times just to get some decent speed.

I'm up to 71 rats now for 2016. Took two in the past week, then a third tonight, after a bit of a dry spell. Seems the odd one is filtering back into my neighbourhood. I'll try to stay on top of the situation with a couple of half hour sessions per week, increase that a little if it seems there are more coming in. Got one on Hallowe'en night with a war-like bombardment of fireworks going on all around us. Poor guy was sitting there looking kind of stunned from all the noise. Made for an easy shot from the balcony, almost straight down into him. Another was climbing awkwardly in some small stemmed and dense growing bamboo, caught him while he tried to get out of that mess.

Tonight was on my closest neighbour's porch. They just love to nibble away at her small salad herbs in big planter boxes, taking the greens down underneath the boxes to munch in about a 2" crawl space there. Lines up nicely from across the fence under my front arbour. Got this one through the right eye as he watched me from about 10 metres, standing with no rest, using the carbine Pardini setup with the NV200 on lowest IR setting to minimize the red glow. About 8" nose to base of tail so not the one I spotted the other night but couldn't get to in time. That one was about a foot long. Anyway, dropped straight away and barely kicked, landing on a grape leaf.

Got my 75th rat for the year the other evening, from my new 'hide' on the kitchen porch. Hung a canvas tarp to give me a little privacy, since the trees are all bare and that leaves our porch exposed to maybe 30 or more windows in various directions. Dang I hate those condos across the alley... it was so nice when it was just one house and a big yard, not the new maze of prison blocks stacked up tightly halfway along the block. Anyway, been nailing the odd rat from the porch since discovering that the last vestiges of their population on our block seem to be nesting under a neighbour's garden shed. Right below our porch. Thought I'd got the few remaining there... but then snow hit this past week and a little trail appeared. It runs between the rotting garden shed (on the right) and the chicken coop in the next yard over (left side covered in plants and snow).



No fresh tracks last night or today. But they wore quite an icy trail during the first snowfall so I figured there are probably at least a few. Two nights ago I got one, top of the head as it hesitated and looked up at the dim red glow of the NV200. Base of the brain with 3cm holdover, as it's exactly 3 metres horizontally from my hide to the middle of the yellow circle where he lies. About 7 metres vertically but that doesn't count into pellet trajectory. Stone still in about 3 seconds. A second blinky eye glowed shortly after but never presented more than that, just the one eye staring up at me through a crack in a board. I'll get that one and probably more, just going to take some time and stealth. Seems it's the movement of the light which grabs their attention more than the glow itself, so I'll try to be very still until the last moment of aligning the crosshairs. This one's a bit out of reach so it'll just lie there rotting like a couple of his kin have done, as that neighbour rarely goes between that shed and the fence.

My duties as rodent control officer for my block continue unabated. Unbaited too. Still haven't managed to remember to set up a bait station. Guess it's because I haven't really needed one. Rats aren't that common now, just 1 or 2 per week. They'll generally come close enough to shoot easily, and be curious enough about the little red light on my scope that they'll pose for the shot. I did acquire a Torrey Pines T12-N thermal viewer recently, hoping it could replace the infrared monocular, but the viewfinder is so very small and the resolution so poor that a rat shows up as a pixel or two, not really a safe shot. Further, the reticle is only adjustable per pixel, and since a rat is a pixel or two wide... well, it's hard to get consistent hits on a 1" target from 15 feet away when sighting in, actually impossible to get 100% on that, so at further rat distances it'd just be cruel. So I'm using it as a spotting tool and for that it's brilliant. They have a 3x version or two, but with such a tiny (about 0.8" diagonal) screen it'd still lack what I need for small prey.

A rep for Torrey Pines assures me that their next generation model is going to have what I need. I sent them a half dozen points I'd like addressed if they were considering designing something for pest control folks. The guy was very generous spelling out the basics of the unit they have on the drawing board for later this year or early next year. It's to have an optical zoom from 25 degrees down to 11 degrees, it'll have a cylindrical body and fit into standard scope rings (easy to get it lower to the barrel that way), and should come in about $700USD. BRILLIANT! He says there's software improvements on the way too. Can't wait. True thermal hunting in a very compact form for less than half the competition's price, and tiny besides, as he says it'll be scaled similarly to the T12. They have a T15 unit now for a lot more money but it just does far too many things for my needs and is rather heavy and bulky.

I just ordered a ding donger via eBay for $14, and just went to Home Depot and picked this little light up, covered the lens w cling wrap, and colored the wrap green. . That will be my light for my "bait/death zone." Now to just get some bait...we ran out of PB, but I do have some of the leftovers they nibbled in our kitchen...now I just have to lure them about 20' away from the house into my kill zone which is 25yards from where I sit w my AG poised ready inside and dry. Anxious to get my first rodent via pellet cause these guys are eating my goodies! There is also a shed right by my kill zone which I store random old stuff (bikes/wet/dry vac,etc) and I'm constantly hearing noises coming from it....I'm hesitant to just clean it out cause whatever is in there is not small...want to lure it out too and then WHACK!...well hopefully..for now I'm waiting for my ding donger so I can join in and enjoy that pleasant tune as much as you guys do.
