Here's hoping my luck will change tonight. Over 3 weeks since a rat last dared to show its face. Nice cold weather tonight for the southeast in late October. Down to 37°F tonight. Got the fireplace going and waiting for the musical tone of the ding donger!

may need to get out the heavy jackets soon

Camerons Mrod is set up at 33yds, lights are on, bait is fresh, donger tests strong, troops are briefed.

Well, I think my season is on winter hiatus. Do starlings migrate? I can't seem to find much about European starlings in wikipedia. I think they have been corrupted by PETA or something because they make no mention of how destructive these little feathered monsters are. I haven't seen a starling in days, and all the apples and other fruit is still around to attract them.

Mind you I only get daylight hours to shoot, so I have no dingdong-er to listen for, but I roam a square half mile of neighborhood with plenty of trees. I think I need to start leaving a bowl of dog food in my dad's back yard again to concentrate them in one area. I am in direct competition with the neighborhood cats though.

This may get me thrown out of the membership, but I can't bring myself to shoot a squirrel. My uncle Keith had a pet squirrel when I was growing up and I used to feed it peanuts and play with it. It loved to sit on your shoulder while you fed it peanuts and was even litter box trained. So no squirrels for me. Sorry guys, but I fraternized with the enemy when I was younger and it turned me. I am so ashamed! Sob!

P.S. It's getting colder than whale poop in an ice floe here right now anyway. 31 right now. You rat terrorist hunters are tougher than me to go out at night in this cold!

Here is my bait station. Just a large galvanized steel bowl to satisfy the appetites of raccoons, possums, Starlings and whatever else is out there. In this pic the coon is laying on the bait station. It was spinning around during the death dance spraying everywhere as the tray was spinning with him on the icy ground. This was using a Condor (.22 or.25 don't remember). You can see the bait station in the 2nd pic

Another close up of the "bait station" reveals long term-use.. Most of those holes were made by pellets after passing through a raccon's or possum's head which is almost always inside the bowl at the time the trigger is squeezed. The Starlings mostly stand on the rim so those are not from shooting Starlings

Also a secondary bowl in the background for squirrels.

Thanks guys. Jerry, actually that is typical of a raccoon kill, and not over the top. Usually the blood spatter is about the same as in the pic when making a fatal head shot on a raccoon. You only see it really well in the snow though. Pictures taken of the lawn or ground around the raccoon do not reveal all the blood spatter. It's very hard to see. The 2nd best after snow is when you kill a raccoon in the Fall with large yellow maple leaves covering the entire ground or area around the raccoon. When taking a picture at night with a flash, you can see most of the blood on the leaves. I have often been surprised later when I uploaded the pics to my PC and saw how much blood the pics revealed on the leaves of the surrounding area. More often that not the soles of my shoes are covered with blood because it's hard to see the blood with the naked eye, day or night (daytime I have taken hundreds of Groundhogs, and it's kind of a similar situation although not as bad as with a coon).

The raccoon can also cover quite a distance during its death dance spraying all over the place. In this case, the raccoon was "trapped" in the large bowl (it was basically dead and it was just nerves), so it completed the entire death dance inside the bowl with its head, shoulders, and legs hanging out. As it kicked very fast for about 15 seconds, it spun itself and the bowl around on the icy surface (I had pushed the bowl down into the soft snow which froze up overnight) 360 degress several times, so all the blood is localized. Had it been free to move around during the death dance, the blood would have covered a much greater area and would not have looked as bad. But the short of it is, what you see is pretty typical of what you get after you shoot a raccoon in the brain. This is why you should never shoot a raccoon on your deck, patio, in your porch, attic, or inside the house!

A couple of people here have done just that and posted pics. They spent hours cleaning the stains (crime scene)

funny thing is, the newly reworked stock that Dave, "Nailgun" has been working on, came in today,.... I put it on Camerons Mrod, and she fell in LOVE with it !

Within 2 hours, the donger started going crazy, and I called out to her to get behind her rifle and "Drill it !"
I told to to not worry about a head shot.
A .22 Mrod pushing around 850fps, 14.3gr, 33yds. ,.... Yeah,.. that should be plenty... just go for "Center Mass".
she did GOOD ! It's her first kill !
WOoo-HOOoooooooo !

So is this a Three-peat for new I.F.A.R.T members tonight ?

Saw this guy chowing down on the cheese. Didn't he know that gluttony is a sin!? And extra rich dessert was called for. Caught him right in the ear.

Banging night in the I.F.A.R.T. Brotherhood!

My plan worked out! Set up the I.F.A.R.T. Survealance system to pin down the feeding habits of the vermin and found it to be WAY outside of my sleep patterns.

Turned in early and set the alarm. Didnt have to wait long as I eased into the man cave!

It seems like it's D-day for rats and mice tonight. Great shooting there everyone!

My ding donger was going nuts tonight and every time I flipped on the light there was nothing there. This always bothered me because it happens all the time.
Well after several times peering out at nothing, finally saw a mouse dating across the patio. Mystery ding dongs solved. It's too cold to leave the door open to shoot one, if I trap one can I join I.F.A.R.T.?

Just kidding. I know it must be an AG kill, but I guess I gotta just trap them for now and enjoy the pics and stories here. I'm loving 'em.
