Yeah, you do get to recognize the pattern of a ham call sign.  Although I've been fooled a few times.

I have a question about scoring. Looking at Aitchy's bottom right target. I would score it a 10,10,9. Aitchy scored 10,9,9. If it cuts the line do you score the higher one?

If the shot cuts the line, it does indeed score the higher of the two rings; however, the shot is an imaginary hole the diameter of a pellet centered over the pellet impact on the paper, not the actual hole made in the paper.  When the paper tears, or the pellet makes a bigger or smaller hole than the pellet diameter in the paper, this becomes a judgment call.

Sometimes the "ghost" of the pellet impact can be seen on a tear to help.  An Eagle Eye Gauge comes in handy for this too (see: http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=1959.0 ).  It is difficult to score the close ones without the actual target in hand (and sometimes it is difficult even with the target in hand!).

From the picture of Aitchy's target, it appears the imaginary hole might not cut the 10 line and the hole in the paper might only do so by tearing into it.  I suspect Aitchy conservatively scored it a 9 on this basis, or with the target in hand he could see that it was indeed a 9 and scored it accordingly.  Now about that "X" on this target...

[Arjuna]

Several posts this week renewed my interest in my Tempest.  The Crosman pointed pellets seem to be a good fit, save for a couple of fliers.  They do make self-sealing holes that make scoring a little difficult.
