.22 Springers pellet penetration in wood?

This may sound stupid and very unscientific, but has anyone ever experimented with pellet penetration in pine boards or 2x4 lumber?

Just curious how deep the average pellets penetrate wood at, say, 10 yards.

I have a Benjamin Trail NP .22 and basic round nose pellets will penetrate maybe 1/2" into a 2x4. Predator Polymags only about 1/8" but mushroom well. I think my rifle shoots 14.3 gr pellets around 650-700 fps.

No two boards will have the exact same density or grain pattern, so theres no "real" info to be gained here.

I was disappointed to find that my 12fpe Gamo Whisper 177 only penetrates about 3/8-1/2 or so into pine board (800-900fps). My BT NPXL 1100 22 will very nearly go through a redwood 2x6. You can see the bulges on the other side and repeated shooting will penetrate. It will also penetrate a coconut if the shot hits reasonably flat. It shoots CPHP at 900fps for about 26fpe. It shoots right through one inch pine boards.

Like Richard posted, the density of wood isn't consistent.  If you want better consistency, for comparisons, then try a thick phone book.

Just for giggles I used a Grainger master catalog to test my Hatsan Torpedo. Got the pellets 650 to 700 pages deep with pages torn almost to 900. 10 yards with AA field heavies ( 10.34gr ) . That seems pretty decent to me. I have tested other guns this way too just for comparison purposes and general pellet testing. i tape the edge of the book to keep it together and because its 4 or 5 thousand pages thick , I can flip it around and get more use out of it.Not very scientific but it works and I can get more catalogs from work when I need them.

I have shot most of mine into boards at one point or another. Be careful pellets will fly back at you at some point. From 10 yards i had one come back hard enough to break my glass of tasty beverage that was sitting just to my right and behind me. Pulled the trigger and pop my glass broke! I stopped shoot at 2x4's at close range. Ill still use them out side at 50 yards or more.
