I think I broke it.... How to rebuild my G1???

I was shooting tonight and I had previously sighted the gun in the night before... took it out and it was shooting almost off the sights at 20 yards ....  so I ran some more pellets through it sighted it back in.. AND the whole time I'm thinking wtH is that noise and why did this happen?  I have a brand new scope on the gun..    well the gun started making weird noises while shooting.  

If I hold the gun and shake it you can hear something...  moving back and forth..  So I've read some articles at CDT website, but could someone give me some more details on how to go about rebuilding my g1.  Obviously something is broke.

First off..... you HAVE to build yourself a spring compressor... these are NOT toys on the inside and they can take off body parts punch out eyes and I would imagine kill you pretty easily taking them apart and reassembling them without the proper tools....

if you are mechanically inclined its not that big of a deal and everything is pretty straight forward... if your not you really should consider have it tuned by someone!! its s shame the post is gone on the old forum or you could see the damage one of these springs can do....
 err here lemme dig up a couple pics...




that's the power these springs have.... I was putting a b-3 back together and was cycling the action getting the sears to set.. the sear caught and as I was releasing the lever it let go and I caught the cocking lever with my face.....  ambulance trip to the hospital and some stitches because the had to sew my eyelid back together..... 

I would suggest reading all the material you can find  before you take on tearing into one of these things and reread it all till you have a good understanding of how it works meanwhile build your spring compressor and THEN try tearing into one and having some fun......

BTW I have 20+ years exp working on firearms 12+ year working with paintball markers plus a ton of other hobbies that build on mechanical skills... it just goes to show that even being skilled AND safe, things happen... so as silly as it may sound to you we preach safety and proper equipment here for a reason!!!!!

Oh and BTW sounds like you have a broke spring!! lol dont shoot it anymore till you have it fixed as it WILL screw up the insides trying to shoot it like that.....

Thanx for the responses. sorry to hear about that injury Mike looks painful.  I am mechanically inclined.  I work in construction as of now.  I've done this since I was 15.  I am currently looking for a job as a manufacturing/drafting engineer.  Just graduated last fall with a physics with engineering emphasis degree.

But I don't have experience in rebuilding spring air guns so I'll need the help of people on the forum who actually know what they are doing.. and have done this before.  lol
   i've looked at the jigs and I'll probobly buy some type of bar clamp to assist me because using a lag bolt or other.. doesn't seem as safe. 

Well I'm going to build a compressor and open the gun up today.  I won't be shooting it anymore, so I'm going to find a broken spring... wow  I guess this is why I shouldn't buy a crosman factory replacement huh?

Springs and seal are consumables. That's all I've used on my G1 & Sierra Pro to bring them back better than specs. I always order spares from crosman for they're cheap with fixed $4 postage. When decompressing your spring, place a piece of wood on the low side of the plastic plug to your compressor. The plastic will crack before you can take the pin out. Just don't forget Newton's 1st & 3rd law of motion so you don't get the 2nd law like Mike.

the crossman springs seem to be pretty decent actually... see the things with springs are is they break doesn't really matter from who they WILL break LOL a good tune will prolong the life of the spring along with a good diet of appropriate weight pellets... other then that seals and springs are consumables they eventually wear out.. (seems the average is around 5k or so before failures but that varies so much too LOL)

well with your background I would suggest finding some good articles(check the library here there are some great articles on tuning) build your spring compressor and then get your hands dirty

yea thats a good point there... I took a peice of 1/2" copper pipe cut it to length and then flattened it out till it filled in the "step" on the back plug that way the force is acrossed the whole peice of plasic and not just on the top part....

oh and yea... the 2nd of newtons laws can be a b$$ch LOL!

Thanx for the tip guys.  I plan on building the compressor here shortly.  I just took a picture and the spring looks like it broke and coiled around the other one....

Well Here are the damage pics...  I didn't even have to use a spring compressor to disassemble.  Just observing that the spring was broken multiple times.  I still took precaution and  I first tested to see if there was any pressure on the spring guide assembly and it was just floppin around...

The spring was not only broken multiple times But it also was twisted


One good thing was my seal looked to be in good condition no tears frays, etc

It looks like it still has that china grease in it,  its really not hard to build just deburr all the sharp edges  , I made me a washer and polished it and put it under the top hat. I am suprised the seal looks that good  remember to polish the spring ends. We are all here  if you have quiestions I am by no means a expert I have did several for myself and friends but there are some here that i do consider experts and Michael above has built plenty even if he got beat up by a b3 LOL!!!! thanks david

yea I've never taken the gun apart It had approximately 3500 shots through it.  which I guess isn't bad.  My build is including this as of now  Apex Small Seal, New-Tarantula 33 coil XLV FP Spring,  Pete's spring guide assembly, I also bought the Lube package deal because I will probobly be opening up my other springer in the future. 

I was wondering what material would be the best to use as a washer for the barrel lockup?  I've seen people use brass I believe.   If anyone knows where to get them I'd appreciate it.

I read an article on pyramid air about lubing that was really helpful.

Hey Schmidt...that`s where I got my knowledge on home lubrication also....from Tom Gaylord`s 13 series blog.  Nice small easy read.  I read the whole series twice and attempted my first "take-apart" job over a year ago....everything went smooth.  Had to change a spring that broke into 4 pieces in my Crosman Sierra Pro.

really hmm using a digital caliper measuring.  I figured out if I bought 1/8 washers  and the are actually .125" thick  I'd have to make them .105" thick.  So a 1/10" thick washer would be ideal. I'll have to bring my digital caliper with me to lowes. lol

But Is brass the ideal material to use here?

I need a good digital caliper... I have a ok dial caliper in inch... want a decent digital so I can bounce around between inch and metric plus they are alot easier to read with my old eyes....

You might consider a lighter spring for your G1. Slightly de-tuning your rifle might make it more accurate and easier to shoot. The other option is a nitrogen gas cylinder, but they are expensive and not available for all springers.

I have used white nylon washers from Ace Hardware. I have it fitted on my G1, Sierra Pro & Genesis. It's the right thickness but have to get the ID & OD sized to make it fit. I just chucked it to my drill to reduce the OD and used a rat tail file to enlarge the ID. I lubed it and got no side play at all. I first did that to my older G1 because I can't get it to shoot at the same hole for I notice it had side play that mess up accuracy. It's been 3 years on same washers. The Genesis was straight fit for the washer.
