125TH barrel bluing question

Here's the barrel on my 125TH


Hard to see here but the first about 2/3rds of the barrel has what appears to be a totally different finish on it vs the last 3rd..  The last third finish is darker while the other end is lighter. 

Is there any way to turn these two shades into one even shade?

Jim,

It looks like the barrel was not sanded evenly.  In my experience, the more coarse the finish the darker the bluing.  If you were to polish to a mirror finish, the bluing would appear lighter as there are less recesses to be affected by the bluing. So, less bluing on the smother finish and more bluing on the more coarse finish.

There may be a way to match the color without sanding the entire barrel down and bluing again, but I don't know of one. I might try to sand the smother portion with a more coarse emery cloth to match the rest of the barrel you wish to match. Then try different bluing techniques that will give the closest color match.  It will be hard to match hot salt bluing with other bluing chemicals, but some can come close.

Well I guess it's going to stay that way...  I thought maybe there was a way to lighten the darker side perhaps with some 600 paper but....

I need to chrony this thing too as I suspect the power may be below what others are getting...

So far my Hatsan experience is lacking a bit...

Very much what my barrel looks like. You can literally feel the grooves from machining still in it. I'll be stripping mine down, smoothing it properly, and rebluing when I tune the gun. I agree, at this  point, I'm not very impressed. I'll also be chronying mine due to the same suspicions.

You could have the barrel  sand blasted with a fine grit, and have it reblued,  that would ensure a uniform color.   I have the Model 135 and it's about as uniform as they get, I havent found one spot thats uneven in color anywhere on the gun.

It almost looks like to save time they didn't bother to complete the finish on one end perhaps they intended to hide it with the muzzle brake but put it on the wrong side...  No idea why the power would be lacking but I am pretty sure mine would not shoot any pellet though a full sized phone book..but I'd have to chrony it to see..if it's low then it's total junk..  I'd bet the better parts found their way into the more expensive guns..and the relabeled guns.

All in all based on the shipping incident the false advertising and the product (lack of) quality control I'd have to say Hatsan is making a poor show for their debut..

Mine looks as yours does.    But it is a monster in the power dept... 31.5-33 foot pounds on all 7 pellets I have tested so far. It's real accurate too.  Im torn on what to do as of late.

 When  you crony it make sure  you shoot it at least 12x. before you crony

I don't know  what the deal is with Hatsan falling short  like they have on the esthetics  issue but  it wont stop me from buying a particular model that I may want..

The air  gun industry drives me crazy, they all have there problems,  issues, one way or another until you get into the high grade German made one's  and even some of them have factory issues of coming  out dry , ridicules.

That's why for me I easily over look esthetics if  I have a issue, so far I have not had any.
 But If I did  I over look it, just to have the rifle itself. Just want a powerful, accurate  great trigger good price point rifle, that's what I get with  the hatsans line oh and the stock mount sas is  the biggest plus to have as well,  I was sick of checking stock screws and using blue block all the time.

 The truth is and we all know it. when you buy something it supposed to represent a finished product and  its supposed  to not have any  issues  at all period, just  air  rifle industry is what it is

It's possible that you have a damaged piston seal.  Which pellets are you using ?

If it's POWER that you want, start following the gas ram swap threads !

Well the gun was supposed to have that 30+ft/lbs...out of the box...!!

I am using my two favorite pellets Crosman Premiers and Beeman Kodiaks both in .22

The only major difference from my old steroid 392 is the pellets seem a bit more deformed..

Is there any way to tell if the piston seal is damaged without tearing down the gun?

If you have access to a chronograph, measured velocity should give a diagnosis.

Paintball parks, archery shops all use chrony's to measure velocity. If you have one nearby, give them a call and see if they can help you out . . .

I shot an old 500 page shop manual with the thin pages at somewhere around 15 yrds with my 125. Only went 1/4 through. Tried again at about 10 yards. Went halfway through. Used 21gr Barracudas.

I shot 3/8" plywood from 50 yrds yesterday with Kodiak 18 gr hollowpoints, and it went through taking a large chunk out the back.

The finish on the HAtson is not near as good as on my WFH. The barrel is flat finish on the HAtson and not smooth.  I am not into rebluing any more. Bedliner pnt is my freind.

My Home tuned steroid 392 used to go through about 3/4ths of a large 600+ page phone book...

I have no large phone book now or chrony so it's hard to tell..  The deformation is the only clue that there is some power there as the 14.3 grain pellet just about broke into pieces inside the book..

But I know this gun is capable of 30+ ft/lbs so I would like to see it performing at that level.

Sounds erratic...like a piston seal..

My steroid 392 would go through 1/2 inch plywood and keep going a while..

I need to chrony it and decide if it needs work what to do...  I feel like sending it back but AA seems not to have much of a return policy..  I wanted to get the Patriot but I was short on cash...
