I think that HW has fewer failures than almost any other major springer manufacturer. I base this only on reading airgun forums a lot, plus owning a few. I am politely suggesting that some perspective is called for- an HW failure is remarkable and certainly a major disappointment to the buyer, but it is mainly notable as an exception to the general rule.

I revisited that thread, for the third or fourth time, and only saw one mention of a separated compression tube.  There were mentions of seeing the seam and over-soldering, etc, but no failures.  These guns aren't Magna-fluxed or X-rayed, so one or two might slip through.

And no need to get testy.  Half of us here just needle the other half for grins.  That's all it is.

FWIW, I was expecting to see the whole barrel/breech assembly to come popping off this gun.  I doubt there's anything to hold it against spring pressure.  If there is, then that's a plus.

We all saw the photo.  So, do you mean that, were you to have received one of these last Christmas it would be in the junk pile today?  Like I said, this stuff happens.  Be glad it didn't happen to you.

I think you've went off the deep end, I never said anything of the sort, where did you come up with that line. What I'm saying is and I'll quote myself again " Hw is no better than any other airgun manufacturer." I was put into my place by someone saying droop was only on RWS  because of poor QC and HW never ever had any QC problems. I started this thread because he was wrong and I'm letting him and everyone else know so.

Actually if I was given a HW for a Christmas present, I would sell it and buy a rimfire or a air rifle of better quality than an HW.

A claim like this supported by one incident sure lacks credibility in my view.

But we're all big kids here and free to have our own opinions.

It would be nice if we could get more info about this failure, but I doubt we'll get anything but speculation.

I doubt this a epidemic of HW defects.....I have posted on the original thread on the yellow asking that the originator of that thread give us updates on the what happened when HW was contacted.....If they don't it is clear they had a agenda that was skewed to the negative.  When I had my RWS troubles with UMAREX I always included the what happened when they were contacted and was painfully honest about it.

The response by HW is what matters!!!!!!

I'll be honest, myself, and say that it doesn't really matter to me.  I mean, this is a gun that, for most of us, is one out of a thousand and half a world away.  Kind of like someone in Dead Horse, Alaska getting a lemon car and suddenly everyone is getting involved.  I feel for the owner but really don't care one way or the other how it turns out unless this becomes a recurring fault.  At least the guy who posted for his bud on the other forum should keep those who are interested updated on what's what.  And can we go to the other forum, directly?  Cut out the middle man?

Me, I would rather hear more about us guys shooting our guns.  Stuff like that.

  Hopefully very soon I can write about a D34K 20 Cal.....just depends when the kits get done.  been going back and forth between the Classic T06 .177 with Vortek and that 20 cal HW 97...I can't decide which I like more they both shoot great.

QC issues seem to be a must in this  AIR GUN industry. I know once again I put my name on anything and it goes SOUTH I would have very much paper work to file and I have to answer to some one. I am lucky that I HAVE NOT had these problems in my line of work over my years of work. Once I put my name on it the work has always been correct. In my line of work QC issues kill or injure people and shut down plants plus the standards are regulated by very high bureaus. My issues are punishable by means of jail. In the chemical world Pressure vessels are not to be taken lightly. NBIC regs are even being adapted overseas now. Overseas they are seeing failures of vessels over the years and tons of junk are being melted down due to NO STANDARDS and NO Quality control just like their AIR standards. There is a great demand for QC inspectors all over the world and believe it or not there is a large shortage of them. This is no different than a shortage of good welders. All of us older guys are retiring and no one is out there to carry on the trade with pride. Anything over 15 PSI is concedered a pressure vessel so go figure how many are out there. Must be 1 heck of a mark up on air guns to be able to let less than satisfactory work to be allowed out the door.

   I have seen some "funky" AA TX200's as of late, brand new out of the box....should we boycott them and make a thread about how they are complete rubbish? Naaaaaw I'll just go out and shoot my poor ol' 97k

O.K. Bart, I know that there have been more than 3 lousy springs in HWs belonging to members of my club alone. There has been 7 members who have had to swap out their HW`s internals for after-market goodies (out of a membership of around 75)
I visited a Pro-Bass shop in Orlando last summer and all I saw was Gamo`s and other Hyper - velocity cheaper branded springers.Perhaps the fact that HWs are still seeming to be a bit exotic compered to the rifles I`ve already mentioned ,explains why U.S. shooters perhaps look at them thru "rose-tinted glasses".I f you visit my local shop ,you will find some Remington gas-spring rifles in his stock ,but theyare vastly out-numbered by HW,BSA,Daystate and Air Arms.Also there isn`t that much price difference between a Remington Trail scope/bag package and a Supersport or HW99s (New model 50s ) scope /bag package.

Anyway like you said ,we`ll agree to disagree, the fact that we take the time to type this stuff shows that we care about our hobby/sports

Those Brit threads reminded me of something that I read a while back concerning UK guns.  When the Germans ship them over, the UK shops cut the springs.  There were a LOT of complaints about how less than workman-like the "end" results were.  Just clipped them to make the 12 ft lb cutoff (no pun intended).  Resulted in galling and HW, among others, was getting blamed for it.

And springs can break for a variety of reasons aside from poor quality.  Shoot a bunch of heavy pellets and watch it wear out prematurely.  Or a few thousand rounds in a short period of time.  Each case has to be taken on its own merits.

Red I saw some of the UK lower power spring mods pictures before.  It looked like the importer used bolt cutters and just chopped coils off and stuffed it back in rifle.

If I lived in UK I would be perturbed off.  The unfinished ends could really score stuff up and cause damage for sure.  HW has quality barrels and thats what matters it is the heart of the rifle.  If I lived in UK I would have to have the rifle opened up before the first shot thru it knowing of the hack jobs having been done on springs in the past.

I'll bet HW has seen them and had some concerned communications with the UK importer about quality standards

That's purely the job of HW "engineers". I live in Germany and I get the same chopped off springs like the UK guys. HW did this to all rifles where the power needed either to be reduced to 16, 10 or 7.5 Joules. Only the full power rifles received good springs. And that's US and the Netherlands right out of my head. In Late 2010 HW supposedly fixed that with good springs for all. I bought a new HW95 in Dec 2010 and there was a spring in it that had both ends properly flattened. But the spring had totally different dimensions, than what you would find in your rifle before. The spring was longer, but the wire alot thinner. So they now started to use different springs for different power levels, instead of chopping down the full power springs to the different power levels.

What can happen with chopped off springs, is damage on the thin metal washer in front of it inside the piston. So a tuning is a good idea if you find a chopped down spring in your HW rifle.
