converted my 760 to rifled barrel....heres how!

most of us would like to have a 600 fps pumper in pellet only right!
every pumper i came across had a bb/pellet combo barrel,i wanted a pellet only pumper.
im gonna try to make accuracy out of this cheap,reliable pumper.
im looking for atleast 1/2 groups at 10 yards when im done.
i bought this 760 thinking it had a rifled barrel....maybe i should read before i buy huh!
when i was a kid i had a 760,the nice one's....i swear it had a rifled barrel,great accuracy.
pinched many fingers pumping that thing!

i have about $50 total invested in this project sofar.
i plan spending $15-$20 more on building a functional barrel shroud.
work is crud at the moment,just wanted to see it shoot before i go puttin hours of machine time.
she works well,shot a 1 inch 5 shot group at 10 yards,no sights.
i guess now i gotta find a pellet this barrel likes now.

the barrel came from umarex,from the hammerli x2 dual caliber/mendoza rm2006 dual caliber.
i have both barrels,ive installed the .177 for now,ill buy another 760 for the .22 barrel.
i picked up the barrel set 2 years ago at my local academy,they had a new x2 that the stock and action was crushed,but both barrels were mint....i bought it for $25.
contact umarex for actual price.

i had to shave 0.005 ths from the barrel to fit the stock plastic breach of the 760.
made a few spacers to secure the barrel.
all ugly rough work at the moment.....here she is!

the hammerli barrel needs some attention,ive scoped the 760,tried several rounds,best i printed was 1 inch at 10 yards with cphps.
on the hammerli x2 a few years ago,i could only print 1.25 at 10 yards,occasionaly id drop a 3/4 inch.
i deemed the gun inaccurate....and parted ways with it due to the trigger group failing.
i suspect the crown is to blame....this barrel has no crown,but a 1 inch tube added past the rifleing....im going cut the tube off and crown this barrel.

after dissasembly,i checked the probe,its too short.
half the pellet skirt covers the air hole.
so i made a longer probe.
same thing happens to a 1377 if you shoot pellets with a deep dish skirt,when fired the air blows out or bends the skirt.
hopefully that solves alot of problems.
and i cut 2 inches off the barrel,its now crowned.
extended the probe,now getting 3/4 inch groups.

tomorrow ill get some pics of my group results.
i got my 1/2 inch 5 shot group i was looking for,took quite a few groups though.
most groups averaged 3/4 and 1 inch.
heres what i think is going on.

the gun itself is flexing,while your pumping,taking aim....ect....its plastic that flexes easily.
take your 760 and grab the body with 2 hands,lightly twist your hands in opposite directions,you can see the gun twist.
i tried 2 scopes,still not printing below 1/2 inch.

i think 3/4-1 inch is more than acceptable for this gun.
maybe with open sights i can get tighter groups,eitherway...im happy with my rifled barrel mod.
im just used to 1 hole groups,my springers print 1 hole all day long.
ive come to relize that 1 hole groups from this gun.....is just a dream.
making a longer probe did make a difference,im wondering if extending the probe on my m417 will be next!
once extended...bb's are no longer an option.

What a cool project.
I've always been curious about how well the grand old 760 would do with a proper rifled tube.
Hoping you can do even better with some tweaking and possibly a really good crowning.
A decent scope probably wouldn't hurt, too.

thanx huntert,unfortunatly i cant view any pics from airgunone.i recieved a permanant ban there over some bull/stupid accusations.
i can read the post though.

my average 10 yards group comes out to 1 inch,sometimes printing a 3/4.
ive re-crowned the barrel,stabilized it as much as i can,installed a new rws 3-9 glass....still cant get my groups consistent enough to satisfy my needs.
groups are better than stock,but not good enough.

ill go print a series of groups with different ammo to show you what im talking about.
grouping is unpredictable.
maybe this spanish barrel just isnt up to the task,my hammerli x2 gave me the same results,drove myself crazy trying to get sub 1 inch groups with it.
my stock m417 with those &^^& peep sights gives me tighter groups.

heres my 10 yard groupings/pellet test....760/hammerli barrel...8 pumps,rws 3-9 ao....zoomed on 9.
from a rest,no wind.
all groups are inside of a quarter,except the crosman destroyers.
the gamo tomohawks gave me a close dime group.
but if i shoot 10 groups of tomohawks,only 3-4 will look like that.

on the 3rd nice group i tried pumpung very slow,not to twist the gun.
every other group was hard fast pumping.
i think the gun is twisting up everytime i pump,causing the poi to shift every time.
its a delicate plastic gun.

I think mine turned out okay. I probably do need to make another bolt probe though, like you did.

im igotit on numerous forums.
i was banned over lots of bull,more than ill ever know.
my posting rights were limited to 5 post per day,i couldnt edit anything i posted,and i couldnt post in a thread started by me.
i could only send out 1 pm per day.
i was told i talk to much,offer to much advise,i had a click of people that followed my every thread,ect.
i was accused of trying to take over and convert the forum to my specs.
so i started a thread asking why this was happening,what was going on,listed what i was told i wasnt allowed to do.....it eventually lead to splash calling me a scammer....trying to scam crosman out of money...ect.
the mods started a thread stating that any member that talked about what happened to me,my situation,or my name would join me in a ban.

throughout that whole ordeal,not once was i warned,no mod ever contacted me,mods wouldnt respond to me....ect.
i was simply banned forever,labled a scammer.
i still dont see the entire story,some members didnt like my high post count that i made in such a short time,complained to mods....thats when my problems there all started.
im friendly,i conversate alot....ive always been that way.
i had numerous threads that were active,id shoot 6-800 rounds a night,so i posted about my experiences,shared gained knowledge with others...ect
im a member at 12 forums,never been accused of anyof those things there.

i hold no grudge on any of the mods/members on ag1,they were mis-informed by a few jelous members,so they acted accordingly.
lampy or WTFB appoligized and admitted things were handled wrongly.

its one of the reasons im quiet here,i keep to myself.

We set no restrictions on viewing pictures on the GTA. If we can see the pictures you should be able to also. Really not an issue with the GTA format or software.

I like what you did for this project. I wonder if a Crosman barrel would be ok to use. Crosman barrels are generally under $25.00 shipped. And they need very little work done to them.

i think the old 760's have metal housing,s ,maybe check out a flee market,or garage sale,you may find one,should clear up the twist problem,its been 40 years since my old 760 days... i,m old,

I currently have my old 760 apart to do a restore and yes it has a metal body, but a non-rifled barrel, may have to give some thought to converting mine to a rifled barrel before I put it back togather. Would be alot of fun to have an old 760 that would shoot dime size groups at 10-15 yrds. Could really suprise some people with that. Like back in the 70s when I was much younger, putting a very modded engine in an old rust bucket and and drag racing the big shots in town and taking them down many times.
