2240 Pellet Questions...

I'm doing some mods on an old 2240 I have. She's getting a stock, steel breech, 14" bbl, power adjuster, and a fresh set of seals to start. Might also open up the valve and transfer port as well. I want to keep it CO2 powered, though I am aware of the challenges with CO2.

With this setup, what pellet weight range do you think will deliver a good balance of power/consistency? I'm about to order a variety of pellets to try, but I'd rather not waste any money on pellets that are too light/heavy (already spent too much money on this stuff anyway lol).

Also, I've seen some pellets that are sized differently (5.53,5.54, etc.). Is that something else I should consider trying at this point?

It'll mostly be used for target shooting out to about 50 yards (if that's a reasonable distance), but I'd still like enough power to dispatch varmints when needed.
Any other mods I should consider?

 First of all. Your said distance of 50 yards is a looong stretch for the 2240 even with a 14" bbl. You would possibly be getting around 500 -550 FPS using 14 gr pellets. Good for up to 30 yards but any further would be pushing the limit of getting good hits.
 Since you won't have alot of power start with light pellets 11.9-14.5gr would be a good start. You can go heavier and the 2240 wouldn't have any problems except having a lower MV.
 The only way to know what pellets you should be using is to test them, each barrel is different even in the same model and each has its own preferred pellet.
 The 2240 I have shortened a 1377 hammer spring installed and I get 35 good shots within 15 FPS at a low 54°F using a 9" .177 barrel. I'm sure there would be more shots in higher temps but Soo far that's what I recorded.

A scope may improve things, but I still would not expect target groups that's for sure.
I can hit a 6" plate consistently at 50yds using my 14" barrel 2250 pistol with open sights,  but the spread is quite large and the number of good shots for this distance per co2 cartridge is significantly less than I get at 10-25yds.

I’ve done 50 yards but mine is a 2400KT with a 24” .177 Crosman barrel using 10gr AA and JSB pellets.

Couldn’t remember the group size but it was about an inch.

At 33 meters, it stacks pellets.

Have pictures of it in my computer.

Well, my 'range' is up to 50 yards, but I usually set up targets and plink at 28 yards.
But, what's the biggest limiting factor for range with this setup? Barrel length not allowing enough gas to accelerate the pellet? Or not enough length at this twist rate to stabilize the pellet?

Try AA or JSB in lower weights; less than 16gr.

Go for a .52 or .53 head as these are soft and Crosman barrels usually like them tight .

My take: a 14” mediocre barrel with that set-up at that distance is too ambitious.

When I shot mine, I topped it with good optics: a Bushnell Elite 6-24x40 AO mildot scope.
