460 vortek pg4 question

My 14 fpe D460 platform (it's a k98) does well with h&n ftts.  .177 caliber

Been considering getting the vortek kit to see how I like a faster shot cycle (JM doesn't make a 460 kit).  The ftts would be going too fast. I shoot h&n and am wondering what pellet might be heavy enough to stay below 920 fps but not be too heavy for the piston. At 14 fpe the ftts seem just right.  Even with the vortek kit, I think that baracudas would be too heavy and generate piston bounce excessively. What about hunter extremes? [scratching head]

Anybody shoot h&n with their vortek 460 in .177?  The .177 is a different beast than the .22 so just .177 input please.

Also, there are two pg4 kits.  Thinking the high power one and not the newer higher than high power [chuckling].

Your issue is not the kit, but the piston.

For 0.177" cal the OEM piston is too heavy.

You need a mid-weight piston that will allow you to balance the time it takes for the piston to reach full compression and synchronize that, with the pellet being almost at the choke.

The H&N 10.6's are a bit on the "thick skirt" side, so if you want to shoot H&N's you should try the Titan #1 full size. Make a well fitting guide and you should be around where you want.

If you feel that the 10.6's are too much, try the H&N BFT (9.57's), or the JSB Heavies (10.3's) .

I feel like every year or two I go through a loop thinking about powering up my 460 platform, then sleep on it after a long shooting session... an enjoyable shooting session... and think, "Do I really need more than 14 fpe?  It shoots so nicely tuned as it is.  Maybe leave well enough alone."  [chuckling]

A day may come when I need a spring and seal change, however, and so knowing a source for the Titan 1 spring that is in or ships to the U.S. is still on my radar.

Hector, I've enjoyed both of your recent K98 articles.  I don't think I'll end up upgradi g the piston as you have, but I do like the 14 fpe setup I have as well as the duplex reticle scope for the gestalt of the rifle relationship.  I notice both your recent tunes are in a similar power range and you also went with a duplex in at least one.

The two K-98's of recent creation are, literally, the Jekyll and Hyde sides of the model.
On one hand, you have a super-light/smooth shooting 13 ft-lbs "gentle" gun.
On the other you have a monster that is yielding over 17½ ft-lbs.

The difference in the cocking force is not HUGE, after all the difference is about 3 coils, and one of them is almost always lost in the pre-compression of the spring.
Where the difference lies is that the 13 ft-lbs version has nearly no recoil. An EXTREMELY fast "total dwell time" (shot cycle + pellet travel in the barrel), and is very easy to shoot rested.
The 17½ ft-lbs one shoots best off shooting sticks padded with foam. And you do feel when it goes off, LOL!
Yes, the HP one also shoots nicely offhand, especially with iron sights. But there are not many competitions for that.
In the end, the HP will receive a Vector Optics Veyron scope to shoot AAFTA Hunter Piston, where the 16X magnification limit can be somewhat overcome by the difference in MV to most other spring-piston guns that need to be shot in the 13-14 ft-lbs region.
And that is going to be an interesting application, most closely relatable to the original "SSG" function because you get ONE chance to get the point and knowing your system is more important  than the cost of the system itself.

The Titan #1 will work with any piston, it's just that you are generating a lot of "extra momentum" that gets dissipated in noise, heat and vibrations. So, the QUALITY of the shot cycle is what you improve when you tune the weight of the piston to the energy/caliber you are using/wanting.
