That would be Si Pittaway and Davy Thomas.  They do about the same with the .25 Snipe also built on the 99 and & it only gets 483 fps with 20 grain pellets in .25 cal.  Those guys are truly amazing.

Something I've wondered about with the hw50 is cocking compared to the r7.  The r7 i just break with a hand on the barrel and a hand on the stock while standing with no leverage (nothing touching the knee or any other body part to gain leverage: think breaking a stick with just your handsj. The hw50 seems like it's just big enough you would need some leverage point to cock it.  But that's a guess.

The HW50 is much harder to cock than an R7. High-ish cocking effort kept me from bonding with mine. You wont be able to cock one like your R7.

I've noticed more people with the hw50 in .177 or .20 claim it as a favorite gun while folks with the r9/hw95 in .22 claim it as a favorite gun (nced one obvious exception).

The HW 50 does not have enough umph for .22 pelelts out much past 30 yards.

Not always the case Yogi, the HW50 has a identical cousin, the HW99 available in the UK as a 12 ft/lb limit gun. On youtube their was a man who used his 99 in .22 to take pigeons and rabbits at 70 yards. It was quite amazing to watch. His channel was Vermin Hunters TV i think.

He might have meant it's not very flat shooting in 22. I had one and sold it because my ranging and hold over skills werent good enough for a 600fps gun.

Si Pittaway is a freak of nature. His skills are superhuman. Rabbits btw are ridiculously soft targets. You look at them crooked they keel over and die. I got a squirrel on a hail marry with my 177 Hw50 at 60-65 yards. Hit it in the head and killed it without a drop of blood. I think it was killed by concussion. It was a bad shot to take and I'm embarrassed to mention it but a Hw50 is not a long range fur pester in any caliber. A 22 Hw50 might have penetrated my squirrels head but I never would be able to hit with a loopy 22 in the first place.

An Hw50 or any gun doesn't need to shoot flat if you only shoot targets at the same distance. If you're hunting a flatter caliber will get you on target more often. Well unless you're Si Piitaway.

To me, the two lightest "real" pellets, which I chrono in most guns to establish a reasonable max speed so to speak, are the 7.3 gr JSB Exact/Air Arms Falcon, and the 6.9 gr RWS Hobby. The JSB's will often be a bit faster in newer springers, but the lighter Hobbys have a bigger, stiffer skirt and fit more snugly, so older designs (which often have a more tapered breech leade) may prefer them.

Yogi, the bottom gun, the 20 cal, is a about a year or year and a half or so newer. It has the cut out on the bottom, whereas the 177 does not. I don't especially care for the looks of the cut out on the newer stock on the 20 cal, but it  has no effect on the way it shoots.

Is the cutout difference between the stocks where the barrel goes when cocking? Hard to see if that's different in the picture.

Cutout is from just behind the pistol grip to roughly an inch in front of the toe(end of stock)  more like it is scalloped out.   I don't care for it.  I recently wanted a 35 and went with the walnut stocked 35e to avoid that .

As mentioned. This is a recent stock design in the world of target shooting (not just HW) that supposedly facilitates using a rear bag compared to the traditional rounded stock. I haven't noticed any significant advantage for my shooting when using a rear bag, but I can see the thinking behind the design.

I don't have any problems with the .22cal or .20cal shooting out to distance, I can shoot my 50's just like ole Si, 50 60yds no problem for these rifles, all you need is a good mildot scope and get the proper zero, and shoot it to test the hold over at different ranges

and no wind, and hope your scope has enough elevation to handle it.  Sure helps if you have a drooper mount.  And a bubble level to make sure you are not a degree + off of perfect horizontal.

I'm ok with a pellet drop of 6  inches or so, but when it gets greater than that it gets wonky real fast!

The absolute best pellet I've found for my HW50 in 177 has been the JSB Express 7.87. This pellet has become somewhat of a legend for the HW50 in 177. Give it a try.

He's the Master of Airgun set-up and a Marksman to boot .

I know I learned a lot from watching him over the years, that's why I have posted a lot of VHT videos here to show people what the 50 is capable of if there up to the game, the 50 is 1 of my favorite rifles, I have said this many times learn to shoot what you have, the old saying go's be where of the man who only owns 1 rifle, because he probably knows how to use it!

Yeah, the HW50S is probably my most used Springer - Best balance of weight/manageability vs. power.

Given how adding the moderator to my two HW50s helped with the cocking effort, the HW 50 is also my most used airgun for my outdoor shooting, which is typically shooting at 25 yards at spinners from our elevated deck or at 30 yards from our bench down in the yard. The HW30 still is tops for my indoor shooting, but that jump in power to the HW 50 makes the HW50 a better choice for shooting steel reactive targets or for the occasional 50 yard shooting session.

Oh, the FWB Sport is in a world of its own as far as recoil, noise and also accuracy and it's fun to shoot when I'm in the mood, but the HW50 is still my bread and butter outdoor shooter and, yeah, I also shoot PCP. At 25 or 30 yards, though, the HW50 doesn't give up much for group size and it is MUCH more convenient to use.
