Is there still a problem with the Vortex ram failures? I understand this gun has been around for a long time and many of the failures I've read about are fairly old reports found around the web. Are all gas rams not to be trusted?

The Vortex gas rams use O-rings for seals.
The get brittle and fail, sooner or later.
The Vortex units are resealable.
Conversion to Crosman NP rams is also doable.........or convert to spring.
Choices, choices.........

I've had my 95 Vortex for 5 years now with no problems.  I store it muzzle down, so that if there is any lubricant in the gas ram it will collect at the shaft and keep that o-ring soft.

+1 for storing muzzle down.  Not really sure if it works but it sure don’t hurt.  My .22 caliber mod 125 has been stored muzzle down for five years and it’s still shooting strong.

I've had too many LIMP Vortex air springs so I prefer the coil spring models. Vortex CAN be resealed with new o-rings.

WHEN WORKING the Vortex air spring provides a REALLY NICE shot cycle! However, a coil spring model with a better spring guide and some quality lube will shoot JUST AS NICE!

Muzzle DOWN storage may help and for certain does NO HARM.

I think there are 2 main reasons WHY Vortex air springs leak.

1) "Cheap" design: Shaft seal is 2 common inexpensive o-rings. EXCELLENT in static seal applications and VERY GOOD for SLOW moving applications. During a shot cycle the Vortex shaft velocity is very fast for an o-ring seal. A polymer "cup seal" would be a better design choice but it would understandably increase manufacturing cost. The high shaft velocity will increase o-ring wear and decrease life expectancy. Muzzle UP will keep oil AWAY from seal potentially increasing wear. Muzzle DOWN will pool oil ON seal minimizing wear.

2) O-ring (BUNA) limited shelf life: BUNA does AGE and oil or no-oil doesn't stop that aging. Most sources say 15 year max shelf life. I've been to many hardware/plumbing stores that have the large assorted hardware drawers. When looking through the o-ring drawers I OFTEN find HARD & BRITTLE o-rings that have been there for 10+ years. They snap in half like a saltine cracker.

Hatsan manufacturing is in Turkey and products shipped to the USA may reside in warehouse storage for several years. I have purchased NEW rifles here that have manufacturing dates going back to 2014. Any o-rings inside those rifles will likely fail sometime soon.

If you have a newer Vortex model that was manufactured recently you may get 5-10 years useful life from the Vortex. If your Vortex is already 10+ years old (from manufacture date) then the o-rings could fail at any time. O-rings can be replaced but not everyone will have the tools and experience to do it.

Summary: O-rings fail from USE and/or AGE.

I just pulled an older Vortex Torpedo out for some lead feeding and it was completely limp. Shot fine when I put it away and it only has about 100 pellets through it. That one failed from the o-rings "aging out". I still have a couple Vortex rifles that are shooting well at over 1000 pellets. But I have PARTS READY to reseal or convert those to a coil spring when the Vortex eventually leaks.
