Thursday - March 13, 2025
With three days left of this season, I have called it quits. It has been an okay season - not the worst but not near the best.
To compare seasons: 23 - 24 Season, I hunted 40 times and harvested 37 squirrels. 24 - 25 Season, I hunted 43 times and harvested 23 squirrels. Some of the high points during the 24 - 25 Season: I killed four squirrels during one morning hunt. I had not done that well in a long while. I also recorded the longest kill shot I have ever made with an air rifle. I think I made a record number of hunts this year. During the season, the cows at Permission #2 made it a habit to follow me for part of my hunts. A few time, I used them as diversion to get close to and kill squirrels. (I called them Squirrel Cows [like Squirrel Dogs]) I saw more Coyotes this season than before in Tennessee. I saw fewer turkeys than in years past. And during my last hunt [March 11, 2025], I saw 24 Whitetail Deer from the time I left my house until I finished my hunt [that is a new record].
Thank you for visiting my thread, complimenting me, contributing by adding comments, and including some of your experiences and pictures. You have been kind when hunts didn't go well. You have shared in my successes. And your suggestion have been insightful. I do appreciate things like that.
I plan to hunt many more years because I am a young 81 years. He is not finished with me yet. Amen!

Mike! You are my hero getting out there @ 81 years of age! But, you are like a FINE WINE, just getting better with age! No matter how many squirrels you end up with each year, you got out there in beautiful ole nature and walked and hunted! I go on an 8 day long range fishing trip once a year and it is fishing not catching (some years it's 300lbs of FILETS while other years not as bountiful) and just being out there on the water seeing things most people don't get to see and being with my friends who are like family is very special indeed whether we hook a lot or not, it is special 🤗, we are both so blessed.

Randal, fishing was my summertime pastime back in Louisiana. Some weeks I was out in the Atchafalaya Basin [approximately 2,100 square miles] fishing for Crappie three or four days. My freezer usually had enough fish to feed all of my Guidry relatives. When I came here, I sold my boat/motor/trailer rig because I could not park it in my yard in this subdivision.
I have fished some of the rivers and reservoirs here - but it is not the same.
We are both blessed with the ability and desire to continue going out and doing.
Thanks for the kind compliments and being a follower of my annual hunting thread.
Until next time . . . .

Tom, I really appreciated your comments during this season.
"Keep on keeping after them." <--- That is the plan, my friend.
Stay well and shoot straight.

Mike, even if you only got a couple of squirrels you still managed to get out there 40+ times which is a lot more than most of us here! Besides, your posts are very interesting whether you harvest a squirrel or not, and you usually post some nice nature pics on those "slow" days.
Looking forward to your hunting posts in the Fall and 20 more seasons after that.

Good morning, Harry.
Thank you for the kind compliment. One thing that is maybe on the optimistic side:
. . .
in the Fall and
20 more seasons after that
.
Even though 20 more seasons is optimistic, it would be interesting to see what this old world would be like in 20 years!

I will be very close to your age in 20 years Mike, so I too would like to see what the world will look like by then, but I am pretty sure the woods will still look the same with squirrels running around

<--- I like your thinking. Once, many years ago, a land owner gave me permission to hunt his woods. Several years, I hunted there with great success. I shared the woods with the cattle that helped keep the floor of the woods very clean for quiet walking. Then in the early fall before the squirrel season started, about 1/3 of the woods was bulldozed clean for cow pasture. The squirrel hunting was great that season because the squirrels from the 1/3 that had been cleared
piled up
in the remaining woods. The normal population numbers eventually returned. Those were some of the best hunts I enjoyed in Louisiana.
Conclusion: Change is always taking place in one form or another.
I wish good hunting for you. And thanks for reminding me how lucky we are.
