I was a machinist for just shy of 40 yrs. One reasonably priced Engine Lathe I will vouch for is the "Jet Lathe". I believe Northern Hydraulic use to sell them. Rather than shelling out a whole lot of money on Digital readouts fit it with precision travel dials and save a good buck. There is other ways to do high precision work without digital equipt. as well, Joe Blocks and Gage rods, Center height gages, etc
