853 a second rebuild so soon: replacing O-rings /valve kits an ongoing problem?

It looks like my 853 needs another rebuild.

It wasn't that long ago about a month or so, that I replaced the O-rings and valve with the rebuild kit.

Everything was find until a couple of days ago when the last shots of the day dropped from the POI about 1 1/2".
The next shots were about 2" low. It was getting late so I just put it up.

The next day nothing changed, but for an unknown reason, it started firing like normal with normal velocity.
That was a day and a half ago and now it's dropping shots again.

I'll bet I haven't put a thousand rounds through it since the rebuild.

Is this a usual problem inherent of all 853s ?

I really don't want to do this again, especially so soon after the first rebuild replacement kit.

I would like to hear from those who have had to rebuild theirs more than once in a short period of time.

I had the innards apart when I did the trigger mod and looking at the photo again
it looks like the O-ring is too narrow.
This is the same O-ring that was sent to me from the CMP people. He sent me three kits, and
maybe this should have been a message or at least an omen that this happens often.

Look at the O-ring. It appears that it's too narrow, right.

 Ron when you installed that oring did you use silicone grease on it or at lest some nd 30 It looks to have some metal transfer dirt on areas that may be where it failed .

I used some Pelgun oil, and that was probably the wrong lube to use.
I now have some Super O-ring Lube that I'll use this time.
I'll also clean the tube a lot better.

 Hope this time it takes, on the other hand you will get real good at this, I lost count how many times I have had Daisy 880s apart, but that was for my tinkering pleasure

Since it's the only good rifle I have it's worth it, and if this is an ongoing problem, might as well
get good at fixing it.

The very worse thing you can think of happened.

I BROKE THE BARREL.             

I was at the process of putting it back together when it got knocked off the table and fell down
to the concrete floor. The barrel hit and snapped off of the action housing (?).






I might be able to contact Tommy Whitten and see if they have one or can fix it.
I think this rifle is so old that a replacement action housing isn't made any more.

I'm going to go and curse some more, now.

No, I discovered that the O-ring was in bad shape.


Does Daisy have this part in stock somewhere?

I wrote an email to Tommy at Civilian Marksmanship Program and he is sending me
a new "action".

I thought it was going to be just theh aluminum action housing, but he actually sent this:



Now I just have to switch out the innards from the old housing to the new one.

I wonder if he sent the whole thing is because the barrel doesn't come out of the aluminum housing.

It's threaded and just unscrews right?

Any way the people at CMP are just totally awesome.

That looks like it’s ready to drop into the stock. I have a few CMP 853’s but never knew they were so generous with seal kits and parts.

Except for the fact that I did a trigger mod on the old one, I will have to trade trigger parts to keep that advantage.
But I did it once so it shouldn't be a super big deal .

CMP has always been great to me and Tommy has been a big help when ever I have had questions about the gun.
Great organization and a great person.

Being generous might also be why they are a non-profit organization.

I put the old modded trigger parts into the new action and also did a O-ring / valve rebuild and put it
back together and it shoots.

I just put the scope back on it but only rough zeroed it in for now.

I sure hope it stays as accurate as the old barrel was. It would break my heart if it isn't that same
one hole, tack driving shooter it used to be.

I tested the trigger pull and chronographed it.

The trigger pulls at about 1.25 pounds and chronographs between 470 to 477 FPS.
This is substantially more FPS and a little bit better on the trigger. 

So far I'm a happy camper.

I think you might be right.
 
Before, I could actually push the end of the barrel down and the action was not moving. It was minuscule movement
but it was still there.

It might explain the 390 to  417 FPS. Now it's throwing pellets at 470 to 477 FPS consistently.

Anyway it's shooting good now and I'm almost ready to say it's still a one hole, tack driving, accurate shooter.

Pretty sure it's like the 880 and 35 -- to remove the barrel the action/housing needs to be heated up to expand it so the barrel can be slid out.  Which pretty much requires anything plastic or rubber that can't tolerate the heat also be removed.  Ditto for re-installation.
