they are made in china indeed, as they are part of RWS new sportline. They are a throwback to the older schutzenfest guns, as said, like the haenels. They are smooth but the only thing is that they are rifled barrels that shoot round ball only, as you cant load pellets. and notice that i said round ball and not BB, as the size is a bit different, like the haenels (how many times have you found a haenel with a BB jammed inside the mag, stuck there forever)? lol. they shoot their own proprietary round ball, which is not as economical as our locally bred BBs... and at 400 fps... well, a red ryder with a Cobalt kit will shoot that and then some. (heck, try putting a RR spring on your 499... you will be yeeping and hollering with every shot!)

New to the bb thing, I have to know, why the excitement over the RR spring in a 499? I just got a 499 and enjoy it but...i usually cant help myself and love to tinker.
