Me vs. My Cat

We play a very delicate balancing act here.
We have as a long time pet, a Cockatiel, who is right at 35 years old now (average life span is around 15 years for a 'tiel.). At 35y.o. Jasper isn't as spry as she was when younger, and will often end up fluttering to the ground.
Jasper, the 'tiel has never had her wings clipped, and has no idea what a cage is, except that place that she goes to for food and water. She has run of the house.

Then along comes Kitty, in the last couple of years. And, she thinks the house is hers as well.
The two have never met.

So, Jasper gets the house when Kitty goes outside, about a half hour after sunrise; and Kitty get the house when Jasper goes to bed. They are only separated by a closed door (or two); Jasper sleeps in the master bedroom, on the shower frame, because she chose that spot, and it is really easy to clean up after her in there.

So, Jasper the 'tiel gets run of the house from lets say 6:30am, when Kitty goes outside, until shes ready to go to roost, which is typically when the sun starts dipping into the horizon.
Kitty is outside from 6:30am, until, as example, today, she was ready to come back inside at 1:30pm. normally its a bit sooner than that.

When Kitty is ready to come back inside, we bring her in through what we call the corner bedroom, which is the mid-size in our three bedroom house (hacienda ranch style 2k sw.ft.). We have a slider entrance at that corner bedroom, where I bring her in from; that, or, what I call Cat smuggling, which is sneaking her in through the house, on occasion.

Jasper goes to roost at 4:30pm, And the master bedroom door gets closed. And, Kitty's corner bedroom door is then opened.
Kitty gets the house from 4:30pm, until about a 1/2 hour after sunrise the nest morning, when she starts into whining about wanting to go out, and the cycle starts again.
I'm gone quite often until fairly late in the evening, recording concerts, and, have taken to sleeping in my music room, where I keep Kitty until the next morning, so that no one has to worry about making sure the doors are closed.
Kitty and Jasper meeting is something that we strive to never have happen. Jasper would lose, immediately.

Adding two more Gophers to Kittys total. 
The newest one, this mornings, she consumed before I could get into the house and grab the camera.  Shes fast.

Shes been so involved with rodents lately, that I'm going to give her a bath, and start into this seasons flea ointment anointments (one per month). They suggest doing so on the packaging.
So, if I bleed out, its been great knowing y'all.

I survived, relatively unscathed, except where she tried crawling over my shoulder. She hooked me, and didn't release, but, didn't dig in either. The hooking doesn't really hurt, and I'm glad that she doesn't go harder than she does. Sarge freed me up from the talons.
The hooking is partly my fault, as I forgot to control her front legs.

She is used to getting baths now. She hates it when she realizes her fate, and whines like a trapped. cornered cat. It is sort of funny, as I pick her up, and carry her out of her room, and then turn the corner, where she sees Sarge waiting, and, then the wailing cat begins.
Then comes the warm water pre-shampoo rinse, and she likes the warm water, and that settles her down right quick. From that point of the pre-rinse, she becomes quite docile, and settles down enough that I can control her with a single hand on her chest.
We use a diluted baby shampoo that we pour onto her, while working it in.

She loves the towel off drying off, when we both, Sarge and myself, rub her down with the towel. She purrs for that. Then we put her in her room, on another towel, on the floor, and she shakes off like a wet dog, including all four points getting shaken off, and her tail.
She settles down, and starts into her own grooming, and will have herself licked mostly dry in under an hour.

 I took in a stray kitten, she needed a flea bath, darn thing purred the whole time, and did not mind a bath there after, the other cats were normal LOL

I just got to clean up a new gut pile that was directly on the stain from yesterdays pile. She loves us so much.

And, she got the Flea ointment treatment this morning.

Me: Nary a shot fired.

We feed her Fancy Feast "snap-packs". And tonight, one called, Sheba, both as wet food, and she gets fed two and three times a day; today, four.
She also gets a good quality designer kibble, always available.

The people that moved on, and left her behind, they were gone for a year and a half before Kitty settled onto our place. And, then we sort of slowly started taking care of her; so for the better part of two years she lived as a wild cat. In all of that time, she learned to be a very effective hunter.

When she first started showing up, she was being very well attended to by a true feral male cat that was complete in the junk dep't. That feral male was very close in size, and appearance to a small Bobcat. He even had a bobbed tail.
Because of his bobbed tail, we called him Halfy. He was a very large cat.
At first, if Halfy saw you at 150', he would hightail it out of there at full speed, and my only view of him was,... large, of the right colorations, and, short tail; yep, Bobcat. Thats all I saw of him, and I was convinced he was a Bobcat.
He'd show up every day howling for Kitty, eventually moving in closer to us, and, Kitty, she just tolerated him. If he got too aggressive, she'd swat him away.  He woutweighed her by probably 3x. He was very large, and Kitty is quite small, at just 4.5lbs. She is extremely fit, athletic, and without an ounce of fat on her.
Eventually, Halfy came in close, and i even got so close as to be able to pet him when he ate (yep, we fed him too).
Halfy stuck around for over a year, but was old, and had a serious limp, but managed to get around. But, he suddenly wasn;t there any ore, and we fear he got picked off by COyotes, or hit by a car.
He caused Kitty quite a bit of stress, so, it is for her better that hes not around anymore. RIP Halfy.

I have my cataract artificial lens surgery date on March 19th for my right eye (100% blurred).
They've also already taken the needed measurements for my left eye, which will follow soon enough.
So, one dead rat,.... Not too bad for someone who was just diagnosed as legally blind, ehh?

Anxious? wow. I've got the nervous jitters pretty bad.

My wife suggested that she saw a Ground Squirrel out exploring my un-split firewood log pile yesterday. So, that gives me hope for good sighting. I caused an extermination of them within a 600' diameter sphere around my place that has lasted a few years now. So,...
And in other airgun news,.... I finally got my Beeman Chief to hold perfect pressure in storage, now, since november, when I resurfaced the valve seat, and put in a new poppet, and burned it into its new seat.

Kitty: one baby Rabbit this morning.
Fortunately, I got to it before it became a gut pile outside the patio door. It is way easier to scoop up and heave back into the wild edge this way.

Me: One less Cat, w/a successful surgery and lens implant in my right eye. 
What a trip, to be able to see out of that eye again.
I go back next tuesday for the start of round-2, the left eye surgery pre-op appointment.

I would have replied earlier in the week, except, something happened with my computer and its aspect ratio thing. The letter size and font became so small that I could not read anything (It had to do with the System Preferences settings). I had to figure out how to deal with it, and my lack of computer cipherin' ability, it took me a couple of days to figure out how to make the letters large enough to actually see them. That, and, the brightness of the screen felt like it was burning a hole in my retina.
But, ultimately,.... what a trip to be able to see out of that eye again!

My cat killed a juvenile male red fox this winter.
I had let the cat outside at night to do his business.
The fox went after my cat, out by the woodpile in my back yard.
Big Mistake...it tore the foxes throat out and ripped up it's stomach with his hind claws
That stinky smelling fox was somewhere between 7 and 10 lbs.
The cat is a 20 lb Bombay with some serious teeth.

That’s great news (the successful surgery, not the dead rabbit). Cataract surgeries done one soon after the first! Wow. I always thought the waiting period was longer. BUT it makes sense so that you don’t develop too strong a habit of using the better eye.

My Cat's name is Elvis.
He is a big boy and is a mix of Bombay and Main Coon.
He was a rescue cat that nobody wanted because of his behavioral issues and temperament.
Surprisingly, he took to us right from the beginning and has been friendly with my wife and I, just a love actually.
He prefers to sleep in a box in the garage and roam the woods at night when he feels like it, even in winter.
I think at one time he might have been feral for a while.
He likes being in the house during most of the day.
He likes water and will jump in the bath tub.
Snow and cold does not bother him one bit.
He acts more like a dog at times.

He can jump from a sit, straight up to around 6 or 7 feet.
He all muscle and moves thru the woods with a Leopard like walk.
He has the teeth to match his size too.

Elvis can snarl and growl like a leopard too. 

That is how he lets the dog know to ...Back Off.  The dog has learned this lesson.... the Hard Way too.

Most of the time the dog and cat are best buddies. The cat will lick and groom the dog when they are lying together. The cat adopted the dog as a young puppy and they ruin around in the woods together a lot... but the dog is high energy, rambunctious and likes to play rough. Surprisingly the cat puts up with the dog chewing on him for an hour or so, then that's it and the cat takes charge. The dog is around 40 pounds but the cat can take him down, no problem, when he wants to.
