I have found that Crosman pellets are rather odd dimensionally. Most .177 barrels are about .176 or .177 measured across the lands of the rifling, and .182 or so measured across the grooves. Most .177 pellets are about .177 at the head (just enuff to keep them from "tipping" in the bore), and .183 or a little bigger at the skirt (so they fully seal into the rifling, plus a little extra "grip" at the breech leade, so they don't take off too soon in a springer).I measured some Premiers and found they were around .180 at BOTH the head and skirt. So they loaded feeling tight...but shot acting loose. While well made and pretty accurate in most guns, they gave quite wide velocity swings when chrono'd.As a caveat this was a long time ago, and the ammo I measured then may be quite different from today's - also the guns. But I got out of the habit of even trying Crosman ammo in springers.
I did a try out with my HW35S. A bit different gun to the one Frank has. Mine has a barrel lock lever and a thumbhole stock. Mine was fitted with a 4x32 non AO Stealth scope Not a very good scope but adequate. The trouble was that it had a parallax set at 100 yds so the target at ten metres was very blurry. I had a go a with JSB 7.87 gns. My Group was about the same as Franks but mine with a lateral spread. That was the only pellet I had that was near the weight that Frank was using. Next I took the scope off and shot from 10 metres with standard HW open sights. The groups tightened up to about half the size. Both efforts were freehand shooting.I put the pellets over the Chrony and the 7.87 gn clocked 560 fps for 5.48 ft/lbs. 8.44 gn Jsb pellets gave 567 fps for 6.3 ft/lbs. My gun is .177.I think the rifle has a weak spring or bad seal or something amiss because I recall getting 640 Fps some time ago.So that little test proves nothing much apart from that I don't particularly like the rifle and any upgrade is a low priority.I noticed that the breach seal has a small but visible crack . I have replaced it before and the crack just appears again. I don't know what is causing that to happen.
