Don't know what plumers putty is, but the electrical duct seal as in the old silent traps works well.
With both of these, you have to periodically check the backstop material. REPEATED hits in the SAME spot will bore a hole thru the putty/duct seal. That is more of a problem for you rifle shooters, than us pistol shooters.

The use of a baking pan is a nice and accessible idea. The addition of a measuring tape catch is a nice, small touch. Thanks!

I reclaim my lead for casting. Digging it out of that putty would be a pain. I am also fortunate not to need to worry about noise. Matter of fact, I like making noise.
