I am glad that Wayne's brother could be found, and has made contact with Wayne.  Hopefully, that should close this case; even if Wayne decides to remain silent.

All you guys eager to have the cops do a welfare check may mean well, but obviously are not aware that the cops have shot many a recipient of such attention (or their dog).  This is because the cops enter every situation as if they themselves are at risk of being shot at; rather than being primarily concerned about the welfare of the person they are checking on.  This is a higher risk, if the cops decide to break the door down and enter the premises uninvited.   

Just imagine the cops surprising you in your house, with an airGUN in your hands.   That is often enough reason to shoot, immediately after telling you to "drop it". 

If the info about Wayne living next to a location associated on the police database, with what used to be illegal drugs is correct, that could also increases Wayne's risk.  As would a database of him being potentially armed, such as a CCW permit, recent credit card purchases reported as gun or ammo related; or firearm registration (depending on state law).

When you call for a welfare check and are asked how you know the person, the words, "from an airGUN forum", that is likely to check the high risk box.  So, you need to anticipate the question and clip that to "an internet forum".

Much better to let a family member exhaust all options, before calling the cops on anyone you are trying to help.  After all, if Wayne had a medical emergency a month ago, the cops can't help him now, and the only urgency is due to your impatience.   Trying to catch up via "more effective action", motivated by your your sense of, "I should have done something sooner".

There is what you know about the person you want to help, and what the cops can see in various data bases.  Then, there is how they weave that info together.  You have no control over how the cops interpret their risk data, nor over how they decide to manage that.  I could tell you a story about how SWAT showed up next door; with circling helicopters, based on the fact that the person calling in a domestic disturbance was calling from a phone number, associated with a cop living at the house next door to the disturbance.

This was somehow transmuted into the cop where the call originated from being deemed the threat, and know to be armed - hence SWAT being sent.  Meanwhile, it was the wife next door that had gone open loop and threatened to hurt the kids.  After SWAT got to the right house, it was the husband who was assumed the perpetrator and arrested; meanwhile the wife had left with the kids.... 

There are reasons why we choose not to share our full names and addresses on this forum.  I have shared this info with a small number of GTA members that I trust, but would not want even them to call the cops to do a welfare check on me.  If my close friends or family can't help me in time, there is nothing useful the rest of you can do.   

How much trouble has its origin in the urge to "do something".  How many proposed solutions are worse than the supposed problems being addressed; in that they are not effective, and cause collateral damage?    If you can't help someone directly, or call their family or close friends to do it; leave them alone.  Clearly Wayne did not feel any obligation to announce his lingering absence  from this forum; nor does he have any obligation to do so.  Why should you feel an obligation to manage his life?  It is OK to notice that someone is "gone".  It is OK to be concerned.  But, invoking the cops is putting someone's life at risk, when in your mind, you are "saving" them.

For the record, all of my interactions with the police have been good.  I have been stopped for speeding twice in my 27+ years of living in the US.  In both cases I was let off with a warning.

I was stopped in an industrial area at 2AM by a cop who assumed I was there to steal - based on many reported break-ins.  Meanwhile, I had just finished installing custom shocks on my car and want to try them out on a familiar road.  We had a conversation via open car windows, with him parking me in from behind.  After what seemed like 10 minutes of calm talk about why I was in my employer's parking lot, and my role at the company, he bid me good night.  Yet, if I exited my vehicle and displayed what could be interpreted as "an attitude", after he blocked my exit, his approach would have been very different.

It behooves you to interact carefully with the police.  When someone else calls the cops on you, you don't even know that you are having an interaction with the cops, until they are on top of you, with their hackles up; even for a welfare check. 

The police have a tough, dangerous job.  They need to approach every situation as potentially threatening to them.  Even a welfare check.

I would be happy for Wayne to weigh in on this thread; even if he tells me to mind my own business.
