Dead Pest of the Day

Working in the yard yesterday and Betty Lou saw a copperhead near the propane tank. By the time I got there it had gone under the tank and I couldn't get to it. Boss must have smelled it because she kept circling the tank sniffing. I put her in the house and went back to working. A bit later I saw it come out. I grabbed a carbine sawed off springer from the gator where I keep it and double tapped it in the head.
This one looked smaller than the one I saw earlier so I think we have a den of them under that tank. If I remember right, Killer told me they like to hang out under that tank because it's cool. Looks like it's going to be an active year for snakes this year.

Exterminate all the brutes Bill!  I’m sitting on the gun deck this morning with a cup of tea and two pumpers charged and loaded (In case I need a fast follow-up shot).  The squirrels usually start moving about this time of day.  Y’all live in a comparatively target rich environment compared to me.  I haven’t seen a squirrel in three days and no Armadillos in three months.

 Saw a couple scrawny rabbits in the hood yesterday, none came to my side of the line 
When chatting with my bud by the garage we did see a feral cat run past with a baby bunny in mouth though

Yep, I'm on them.. I don't think Boss would survive another tangle with one at her age. But she is relentless.

I hit 2 squirrels this week with my car while not even trying and the last one while I was only going 20mph near a stop sign yesterday.

 Roadkill at stop signs is fairly common, I wonder if they were stopped and got rear ended

  Yesterday I dusted off the BSA R10 for a "bird safari" to the original rat barn. Wind was steady @ 5-7mph from the west w/ 25mph gusts , according to the
  weather apps. I know one thing,,, it was windy! The farm hands had just dumped a fresh load of silage inside the shed & the starlings , HOSPs & pigeons were
  visiting regularly. I parked the Toyota where I could see through the shed opening ,but have an angle on a rack where the sparrows tend to perch. All the while I
 have to keep my eye on the cows wandering through (like they live there or somethin'  !!) I had ranged most of the first "scouts" from 22yrds to 44yrds. I had
 Apolo 18+gr pellets sighted in at 40yrds, a shooting bag on the drivers window & a coffee on the dash,, I was ready! The shooting commenced shortly thereafter.
 I started w/ a young starling in front of the pile on the ground where the pellet would bite the dirt instead of landing in the feed pile( I don't shoot into feed piles).
  I then took a few shots at the starlings that landed on top, but missed the windage adjustment. Had to wait a few times for"bovine intervention" ,but eventually
  got a few adult starlings as they landed on the floor to the side of the pile or on top. I tagged several Hosps off the barns' rain gutter that I couldn't recover for
  the cats and a few that landed on the rack (easily retrieved). Then a couple pigeons visited ,but wouldn't give me a good shot at the pile. They took flight then
  one perched on a roof corner on the old shed where I got the wind hold right & dropped it at 44yrds . The partner landed on the rooftop a bit closer looking into
  the wind which would give me a chance to collect it if it rolled back toward me off the roof, IF I connected! Don't ya know I muffed the shot! The bird just lifted
  off & settled down again so I held a bit more for wind & brushed the slick R10 trigger , Slap! The bird flapped then fell on the offside roof , no recovery for the
  kitties for it. I popped anther starling off the old utilities pole by the barn & decided to gather the kills for dropoff & head home for lunch. I ended w/ a bag half 
   full of birds.  The farm cats greeted me w/ great enthusiasm !

Prairie dogs must be suicidal. Or more likely, extremely stupid. Avoid driving into them, and sometimes they run INTO your new path of movement. 🙄

Some deer do the same.

Prey animals are simply programmed to run in a zigzag pattern.

"Programmed" is apt. There does not appear to be an iota of thinking involved.

Programmed is right.  Small arboreal critters that are eaten by hawks and owls are programmed to change direction haphazardly at the approach of a predator.  It’s the best way to throw off a flying attacker.  Interestingly most of the squirrels I have observed being eaten by a predator fell to rat snakes.  Apparently that changing directions randomly doesn’t work against snakes.

 This chipper ran into a hole then popped back out a foot from the hole I put a hole in it with my Umarex Canex 
 And a few Starlings sniping from the barn out to the cow yard area, not all were retrievable Nick got a few also but no chippers today. Winds were gusty many shots were fired not always flying where they needed to go.
