Dead Pest of the Day

Pesting has been slow around my place lately.
I eliminated most of the chipmunks last month.
The last one that I shot, was out by the wood pile.
It was a 30 yard shot with the .177 cal. Stoeger S3000C rifle.
The pellet of choice for that rifle is Crosman 7.4 gr. pointed pellets.

 I spied another Ghog den on the upper orchard property, conveniently located by my 100 yard back stop, now to find the right time for target practice

 James , keep an eye on that new hole!! I was out later in the day yesterday, Arthir. was kicking up in the am & I just couldn't get movin'. When the med.s finally
 took hold , my attitude changed & I got the Kral NP03 & the Ranger .25 loaded up then headed to the farm. I spied two 'hogs out a couple hundred yards away
 past the first barn. Nah,, they can wait another day. I did a slow drive around & glassed for others close to the bins & machine sheds to no avail , so I changed
 operational mode to bird control. I went over to the main milking barn & stationed overwatch at the calf hutches. I found a good spot where I could also check the
 status of a 'hog hole that has produced well in the past , yet I'd seen no activity thus far in '25. Well the HOSPs obliged by perching on the fence three times. One
 miss, but I connected on the next shots (3 for 4). No show for the Ghog , so I ventured over to the silo where I got the first & third of the season. I just pulled up
 past a stock trailer & hadn't stepped out when a 'hog sauntered around the silo on the far side of the trailer ,not twenty feet away! BUSTED ! I snatched up the
 Ranger & eased around the silo ,but it had given me the slip . I got to gab a bit w/ my host & chided him about the tall grass & hay all around the farm ( rain
 rain, rain) & complained that if I can't see 'em I can't shoot 'em. That was met with a hearty laugh, something about only having two hands & two legs,blah,blah   
  & a wave of the hand . I guess I'm on my own .  I hit up another barn to check for 'hog activity where I was able to procure three more bird snacks for the farm cats before heading back to the castle. I was planning on taking my string trimmer out this am , but the sky opened up before coffee was poured
 so that's out! Well , see what the day brings I guess.

I havent shot my airguns in many months. 3 days ago I returned from a 5 week sail to find all the oak trees I'm trying to grow from acorns pulled out of the pots and dried up. This afternoon i spotted a squirrel lounging on slanted tree so  I grabbed the .177 HW100BP and took a shot. Miss. Another shot another miss. 8 shots all misses. The gun is zeroed at 40 yards. The squirrel is 36 yards out. The shots are hitting the salt grass 88 yards out. I lower the cross hairs 3 mildots and squeeze. Thud. He rolls off his perch. I grab the .177 2400KT and walk towards him when I spot his mate. 1 shot about 8 yards and I have 2 down. I'm not inpressed with the taste of these eastern greys so I chopped them in halves and placed them in crab pots. Now they sleep with the fishes.

note: NC has  spring squirrel season for private lands.

I missed a squirrel sitting exactly where I shot one yesterday, but 2 more were in the front yard. Luckily they were near the woods providing a good backstop. Missed 2 shots on the 1st and it scattered into the woods. Brought out my range finder and found I had underestimated the distance. Now knowing the 2nd squirrel is at 40 yards, the guns zero, I layed in the grass and patiently waited for it to eaise it's head. Bingo! The Polymag struck, instantly dispatching it.

 Carl , now those crabs are gonna taste like squirrel !!  Hey ,good shootin'! I pulled the main bird feeder ,so they'll bother the neighbors now. They are mainly
 chowing down on Maple " twirlers" in my lawn.

I eliminated a couple of Lubber grass hoppers (Locust) from the garden.  I saw them when I was picking crookneck squash and went to my shed for something air powered to do the job.  The first thing my eye fell upon was the AV/SA M1 carbine.  Just the thing for blasting insect pests into mucilage!  No finesse was necessary.  Just blaze away at point blank range until there was nothing recognizable left!

Those of you who garden will understand the satisfaction of eradicating garden insects with extreme prejudice.

'Bout time for them snakes to start slithering around. I'll be packing when outdoors and keeping a watchful eye. Not a good place for bird watching.. you best be looking on the ground and not in the trees.

I was up before the sun sitting on the gun deck with the Flash-R.  Two squirrels tried to run the gauntlet about 0700.  Only one of them made it.

This one was 60’ up a Loblolly Pine, thirty yards away.  Another of my patented boiler room shots with a JSB King and this nutter took the long dive.  Dead before it hit the ground.

The  bipod on the Flash-R is useful for propping the rifle upright.  Haven’t found another use for it yet.  The squirrels around here are all up in the trees. It would have to be a darn long bipod to be of any use shooting squirrels.
I actually like the bipod.  It is helpful for bench rest shooting and I’m sure it will be useful for shooting Armadillo.  So Far I haven’t had a situation where the bipod would actually help me shoot a critter yet.  The last two squirrels I shot were from the seated unsupported position.

 Dead nutter accurate    For a higher rest shooting stick are the answer. My bipods are bench or hany hold my gun legs

Besides being too flexy, the fiberglass driveway markers are undesirable because when the outer smooth gloss wears off, the glass sheds spinters that are impossible to remove even with the best tweezers. You can't even see the tiny splinters in the skin, and they don't come out by pressing duct tape over the area and lifting. Very similar in irritation level and lack of way to remove as "blind prickly pear" spines. Wrapping in duct tape should avoid that problem but not the flexing.

My local hardware store sells wooden dowels in different diameters and lengths. I couldn't watch the whole video (slow connection) and don't know if he mentioned those.

Sam that's how I feel when blasting hogs. Turns out I didn't miss that hog the other day after all. Satisfaction for the aggravation of fixing my fence after he tried to bulldoze through it.

Best thing to use is sticks gathered in the wild I agree about the fiberglass, we have fence post at work like that and need gloves to handle, they all need tore out maybe a miles worth with 4 strands of wire

Sticks gathered in the woods don't need painting or wrapping, at least.

Here's another DIY that is simple, easy, and cheap. I believe the term knot is incorrect in this project. It is a hitch. But the idea looks worth trying.

Try not to grit teeth too hard at the shaky handheld camera work!
