When I was doing high end remodeling I was assigned a job to remodel two bathrooms in a home. The husband was on an extended stay out of town for his job so the cute as a button wife was running the show. I inquired about the water shutoff and was told she had no idea. A phone call to the husband was just as helpful, never needed it. All they could say was its in the basement somewhere. After a full 8 hours of looking by myself and a master plumber we finally found the valve. It was behind a firred out finished wall with a heat register cover in front of the valve. I wanted to build a finished box around to make it easier to shutoff but she didn't want the pretty wall marred by that to quote her ugly valve. Two years later while on vacation a pipe burst and the house sitter had no idea how to shut down the water. By the time the water company arrived the house had a built in swimming pool in the basement and totaled out first and second floor flooring and a large portion of the first floor walls. Live and learn!

there are some basic life skills everybody should have. Fixing basic plumbing leaks (leaky faucet, leaky washing machine hose, hooking up aid washing machine, shutting off gas supply, cutting off water supply), resetting breakers, fixing basic meals, balancing a budget, changing oil, changing tires...
For people who work in a trade, these "life skills" should be second nature. I'd be reaching out to the "installer" company plus the store you bought it from, let management know you intend to destroy them on social media first for willful negligence and breech of contract, then make a monstrous stink until refunded for installation. And if they do not refund, head toward the headache of a full return on THEIR dime for negligence in contract. Seriously, I'd take a day off from work just to crucify the P.O.S. company doing the "install" that you paid for.
I may sound pretty harsh, but anybody not willing to make an example of such trifling behavior is enabling the arsehats to get away with such behavior. Thievery by any other name is still thievery; breeching of a contract (written or otherwise) is thievery.

A local commercial here for a HVAC and insulation company states if they can fix a problem in an hour there is no labor charge just parts. They have a woman tell that she was charged over a hundred dollars to change her thermostat batteries
