Why the heck do 3/4" 5C collets have a range of +.000/-.001"
when even tight tolerance 3/4" or .750" 6061 has a +.001" tolerance???

I am always breaking the rules then.
They aren’t going to work properly though every time .005 undersize but can be bumped in while indicating for a spin fixture or light cut if needed .They definitely don’t work well with oversized stock.

The typical 3/4" 6061 I get measures .752" to .754" O.D.

ER32 collets don't like it much, but I get by.
Now that I am setting up a Hardinge with 5C collets. looks like I have to do some skim cuts.......
McMaster catalogs tight tolerance 6061 that is +.001, but it is out of stock.

I am fearful of screw machine rod stock pricing.

Can you just use an emergency and bore it to the size you want?

That's one way, I suppose.
It still drives me to drink that work holders do not come in the sizes of the material to be held...........
But aluminum round bars have tolerances that range from +.001 all the way up to +.007...... one ebay seller even says +.07"...I think NOT...
I can see that the alum rod would want to have a few thou oversize so that it will clean up at the stated diameter, but just not by being held in a collet...
I guess that's what jaw checks are all about..............

Sounds like you need a jacobs flex collet chuck.  Or just up the ante a bit and buy a W & S Chucker or #2 Turret Lathe since you seem to be in production mode.

collect are size specific you use the collect that fits. as mentioned if you dont have the size you need and cant find it just make with with an emergency collect very standard.
you can also go to something diferant or use a chuck as mention but i would just use the 5c they work they are cheap enough very coman and they work

Yeah, a steel emergency collet should hold up pretty well on aluminum. MSC has different brands available. Price varies.
