I am interested to know if you need to put the air rifle in a hard case? I am interested in taking a springer, but I don't want to put it in a case as I am already taking a box that is filled up and sealed and only space i have available now is in my luggage.

Ultimately I was planning to travel by air with an air rifle, but I had to cancel my trip.

You'll have to check the terms and conditions of the carrier though. I found out that interestingly enough a lot of carriers do accept you to travel by air with an air rifle as long as you check in your luggage and put your air rifle in a hard case indeed + mentioning it at the counter with checking in that you have an air rifle in your luggage.

But again, please check the T&C's of the carrier if it is possible and you'll be fine.

Pablo,

An airgun will seem just like a firearm to airline security. If you don't declare it they will discover it via x-ray as an "undeclared weapon".

Whether air rifles need to be in hard lockable cases is something that people who travel a lot should be able to tell you. Steve Scialli of the Airgun Exploration Advancement Channel and Vlog on youtube should be able to answer your questions; or describe how to find out:

Steve might tell you the obvious; contact the airline you plan to use and ask them. You won't be able to talk the airline into adopting what you know to be legal, if they have a different standard.

TSA has their own rules: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/pellet-guns I believe they also require the use of a TSA approved locking hardcase.

They also recommend you check with the carrier you're traveling on to see what if any restrictions/requirements they have but safe bet NONE of them are gonna let you on that plane with an air rifle as part of your carry-ons.

i said luggage (Checked) not my carryon, I already went to TSA and BB GUN and Pellet GUn are allowed just need to check with Delta, but I'm been trying to get a hold of them by phone, waited more than 2 hours and by messaging and still No answer. I will try again today.

Thank You Subscriber, i've sent Steve an email, hopefully he has some information for me. Delta has been really hard to contact. WAited for more than 2 hours last night and no answer, had a dinner to go to. Might try again today. Was looking for actual experience from members here who have traveled with airguns.

What i want to bring with me is a Springer, it would would be out of the stock, and in a softcase so that it could fit in my luggage. This luggage would be checked in. I am only allowed 2 luggages, but the first one is a box that i have some gym equipment I will bring to my brother and it is already packed full and sealed. Each luggage is allowed maximum of 50 lbs and in Delta's case $30 for 1st and $40 for 2nd check luggage.

Do yourself a favor, no matter which airline you fly, check it in as a firearm. Follow the firearm guidelines for the airline you choose. Even though regulations allow pellet guns, not every TSA agent knows the laws. They will just see a gun that isn't secured (locked in a hard case), and you will be delayed until they can find someone who can straighten out the mess . You might be delayed long enough to miss your flight. Do it the easy way.

Best advice!

Don't forget -- Some countries actually declare airguns as real firearms (or by FPE rating). Look at Europe and even Canada.

Even though you might be able to bring it over to the other country, you then may need a license to even possess it.

The government (anywhere) is not your friend. Do you want to get locked up for possession of a firearm in another country?? I didn't think so...

I'll add one more thing, it's like (trying to legally) carrying guns within the US... you need to know the laws in which state you are going to and their respective laws.

It's kind of like hunting... read up!!! -- Do not incriminate yourselves with State and Federal laws with gun laws... whether it be real firearms or even airguns.

Check the airline size requirements for hard cases as some may be oversized luggage and have a high fee to take on the flight. Last time I flew with guns they wanted $75 for an oversized case. Some airlines have a list of hard cases that meet the regular size luggage fees. You will also need a TSA approved lock on the case. The TSA has a master key to open that style lock for inspections. Some airports will send the case up the carousel with the luggage and some will have you claim it at an oversized luggage window. I flew into Dulles once and the case never came up with my luggage. As I was trying to find someone to report it to I saw a luggage handler wheeling it down the aisle. They had a few disappear over the years so now won't send them up as luggage.

+1 on this - and not just Federal and State, you need to be aware these days of what cities you are traveling in the USA. You might not lose your air gun permanently, but the effect of spending money on a lawyer to get it back after confiscation might be the same. I would think a locked hard case (rectangular solid) would be the minimum to travel around the USA with any type of "arm" that you don't want to either conceal or show off. I'm not interested in arguing pros and cons of the laws or their enforcement. A question was asked about traveling by air, and I'm just pointing out that you have to land (usually in a city) somewhere.

Very good points on cities!

I was just reading on here, that someone wanted to shoot their airgun, but they lived in a close dwelling arrangement. Even though it was likely more than safe, they were worried about someone seeing them shooting a gun and next thing they know they'd have black hawks flying overhead, and SWAT teams coming in their yard... not mention, who even knows if it was legal to do so.

Glad I live in the sticks.... the only travel I do is for work, food, supplies... the other travel is on my Kubota tractor down to the back yonder woods where I can get away from craziness.

I'll fill my tractor up with some Jet A and drive that to my destination - my woods. I can then say I flew a jet.
