Yesterday at 5am I drove 35 miles of the 65 to my dairy and steelhead river and couldn't stand the driving conditions anymore so I turned around, prayed, drove slowly and headed for a wood stove and hot coffee at HOME.

In 40 years I have NEVER turned back on that gnarly road but it got me this time and here's why.
1) it's my wife's truck
2) dark as a cave
3) super bright headlights on all the commercial vehicles using that road
4) tail gaters
5) driving in the clouds to the summit and beyond
6) raining hard
5) the road is destroyed and very bumpy
6) the centerline strip is mostly gone
7) the fog line is mostly gone
eight ) there are a bajillion huge bright road warning signs that actually blind you before the corners
9) elk crossings all over
10) FOGGY

Couldn't see s h ! t and was guessing where the road was at 35mph in a 55 zone and NOT HAVING FUN ANYMORE. I'll save that gem of a road for DAYTIME driving.

Johnny, you are still here to tell the story.  That is a good thing.
Your story reminded me of several reasons I was soooooo happy when I retired:  20 miles of bad country roads, foggy conditions often, rainy conditions often, darkness with the bright light of the pickup trucks pulling trailers [which tilted the headlight even higher], and idiots driving like getting to work was more important than LIFE itself - all made me a little unhappy.  And you didn't mention high water which was sometimes a problem in the flat Louisiana southland where I lived and worked.  Others had it even worse too.  Stay safe to fight another day.

I didn't want to 'run on luck' only and God is looking out for me so time to use the brains God gave me.

I've been negotiating that road for many years, at 4am to go salmon fishing, and it's exhausting EVERY TIME. I am "road drunk" by the time I get there from all the curves etc.. and then get on a boat and sit in waves all day. DONE.

Crack 'O Noon Johnny and do just as well.

Yeah, sometimes old age and treachery will overcome youth and bravado. Congrats.

I've had some "real" trips in my time, and one surreal trip that I will never forget along some ridge roads in the Appalachians because of a bridge that was out that if I hadn't gotten so far in, I'd have turned around, and if it wasn't the middle of the night and I wasn't on one lane roads that I was concerned about trucks of one sort or another coming along and knocking me off the ridge by accident in the fog I would have just stopped. The lady who had given me directions through the backroads (yes, she lived on the other side of the ridge) said to me when I arrived a couple of hours late that she never expected to see me. :P  "Gee, thanks."

That's a double whammy! At least if you catch that part becomes smiles even in rough weather.....driving in those conditions is mental and physical exhaustion....I hear ya! Be safe sir Johnny!

I used to go to work come *(&^ or high water (snow/ice). I always made it,... but a 45 minute drive might be a nerve shattering 2 hours. Better safe than sorry. 4wd and snow and ice tires,... or I never would have tried.
